Cody Garbrandt vs. Long Xiao
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Xiao (-148), Garbrandt (+124)

Round 1
The preliminary headliner will conclude the de facto “Cody against the world” series, with gentlemen named Cody sporting a record of 0-2 so far today. Garbrandt (14-7, 9-7 UFC) would like to turn things around for his namesake when he faces the well-traveled Xiao (27-10, 1-2 UFC). Fists and feet are sure to fly in this bantamweight encounter, and they do just as soon as referee Herb Dean clocks them in.
The fighters do not touch gloves, as Garbrandt is loaded for bear and promptly puts three fists on Xiao’s face. Garbrandt backs off to circle around, and he works the lead leg with a kick but is booted with a shin to his chin. Garbrandt retreats in a hurry, and Xiao largely lets him off the hook with little more than a low kick. Garbrandt crashes the pocket, and he is met with a knee to the body, and when he takes a step back, he gets kicked in the stomach. Xiao swats out with kicks from both sides, following the former champ around without anything coming back at him. The Chinese fighter side kicks the body, and Garbrandt locks him up in a clinch when Xiao gets in close. Garbrandt thumps the body when tied up, and he lashes out with a ferocious elbow that drops Xiao.
Xiao pops back up and hoots, with the strike apparently a flash knockdown as he gets back in Garbrandt’s grill to chase him around. Garbrandt spins with an elbow that tags Xiao in the forehead, and Xiao raises his arms as if to ask for more. Xiao takes a step back and slips, his balance possibly not fully back with him, but he proceeds to stalk down the former bantamweight king and work his lead leg. Xiao motions to Garbrandt to trade when he gets struck, and he thumps Garbrandt in the face with another head kick. Xiao loads up with a hard inside leg kick that makes Garbrandt switch stances, goofing around and swinging his hands around while they are well out of range. Xiao peppers the front leg and charges in, but Garbrandt greets him with a double and tackles him to his seat. Xiao springs right back up, and Garbrandt tries to kick him in the head but is too close to get it off. Xiao responds with a step-in elbow, and he fires off a body kick and resets to attack with a wheel kick that misses. Garbrandt strings together three punches, but only one partially lands. The horn sounds.

Round 2
Xiao comes out of his corner with a strategy: attack Garbrandt’s lead leg. Garbrandt lines up a few punches and offers out a takedown, and Xiao sprawls and the two reset. Garbrandt digs a right hand to the ribcage and goes upstairs, causing a thin trickle of blood to drip from the Chinese fighter’s nostril. Xiao goes high with a kick, and he stays busy with offense to any target he can find. He just misses a step-in elbow when Garbrandt crashes the pocket, and Garbrandt wings a right hand that misses the mark. Xiao thumps the body with his shin, and he kicks the front leg to force a stance switch. Xiao kicks his foe’s leg out from beneath him when Garbrandt is about to engage, and Garbrandt gingerly stands back up and immediately absorbs one or two more for his effort.
Garbrandt crowds his opponent to pursue a level change, and Xiao breaks and blocks a spinning back fist on the break. Garbrandt shoots for a single, and Xiao scrambles out of the way and responds with a low kick. The 27-year-old nearly bashes Garbrandt with another head kick, but it is his calf kick that is hampering the former champ in a major way. Xiao chambers and fires a high kick, and he pushes off the stomach with a side kick and narrowly misses one up high. Garbrandt signals that he missed by this much, and then takes a right hand on the chin. The two crash together, with Garbrandt attempting a takedown and headbutting his opponent, and Xiao tumbles to his seat. Dean calls time, and Xiao wants to get back to it and high-fives Garbrandt and is alright. The tepid round comes to a close.

Round 3
Xiao reintroduces himself by offering up a steady diet of kicks to all targets. His body kicks lead to low kicks, and one bumps into Garbrandt’s cup when Garbrandt is ducking down for a takedown. Dean sees it and calls time, and the former champ takes about 50 seconds before he is all good. Xiao immediately pushes the pace once more, going after Garbrandt and dodging a wheel kick. Xiao rushes after him and boots Garbrandt square in the groin, who topples to the mat and dislodges his mouthguard in serious pain. Dean again calls time, and Garbrandt starts dry heaving. The dry heaving turns to actual vomiting in a bucket, which should mean the fight should be over. Somehow, the fight is not actually stopped, even though the rules clearly indicate that a fighter who vomits during a fight “shall be stopped by the referee and the fighter shall lose the contest by a technical knockout due to medical stoppage”—quoting the Unified Rules directly. No one has a clue what the rules of MMA are anymore, and Dean deducts one point from Xiao but restarts the match. Garbrandt gets back to his feet and goes ballistic a la James Thompson against Aleks Emelianenko, screaming at Xiao and preparing to assault him violently. Garbrandt comes out swinging for the fences, and they crash together and end up in a clinch. Remarkably, Xiao knees Garbrandt in the groin again, and Dean stops the fight and takes another point from Xiao, while threatening that there will be a DQ with one more. When they resume, Xiao leaps forward with a flying knee, and Garbrandt motions that he missed by a mile. Xiao points to the ground, and Garbrandt does not bite and engage foolishly.
Xiao chases after the former champ, and he walks directly into a right hand. Garbrandt retreats rather than engaging, possibly still compromised from the multiple fouls, while Xiao wings kicks at him. Garbrandt keeps moving, landing a body shot and one to the head. Xiao runs at Garbrandt and kicks him in the head, and when Garbrandt drops down, Xiao knees him in the head potentially illegally. Garbrandt stands back up and knees him back, but it is almost exclusively Xiao who is attacking. Xiao sprints forward and clinches up, where he hits a trip takedown and lands in full mount. He hits the floor with one second left, and lands at least one punch after the bell. When time mercifully expires, Garbrandt has to shove his opponent off of him, and there is very nearly a brawl in the cage but for Dean getting between them. They proceed to bury the hatchet after one of the worst fights in UFC history, and it just so happens to be the second fight that many new MMA fans will be seeing on the CBS airwaves. Talk about a disaster.

Angelo Bodetti Expert Hesitant picked Feb 8, 2026 (27 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Angelo picks Cody Garbrandt to win based on his striking and footwork, but strongly advises against betting on him, calling it a ridiculous thing to do in 2026. He notes Cody's age and recent loss to an older fighter, and says he would never put money on Cody. He separates pick from bet.

no money on Cody Garbrandt
"I am going to pick Cody Garbrandt... but I would never bet Cody Garbrandt in 2026."
BI
Big Brady Expert Hesitant picked Mar 1, 2026 (6 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Big Brady picks Cody Garbrandt as an underdog over Xiao Long, but with low confidence. He believes Garbrandt is washed and can't take a shot, but Long Xiao lacks KO power and has poor takedown ability. Garbrandt still has elite takedown defense and anti-grappling. Brady expects a boring fight where Garbrandt uses movement and clinching to win a decision, similar to his fight against Trevin Jones. He warns fans will boo.

Garbrandt by decision
"Give me Cody Garbrandt. Cody Garbrand by decision as the dog. Gross."
CO
Cody Saftic Expert Lean picked Mar 4, 2026 (3 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Cody picks Garbrandt as a dog, citing his superior competition and wrestling ability. He notes that Xiao Long has been taken down frequently and that Garbrandt can use wrestling to win. He acknowledges the risk but sees value at plus money.

"I'm going to take Garbrand to uh sneak this one through, man."
CO
Connor Ruebusch Expert Confident picked Mar 6, 2026 (1 day before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Connor believes Garbrandt should win easily based on speed and the level of competition. He notes that Long Zhao has struggled against low-level bantamweights and that Garbrandt, despite his psychological and technical flaws, has a massive advantage in athleticism. He is shocked that Garbrandt is an underdog and thinks the line is inaccurate.

Surprised by the odds; Garbrandt at +135 is a value pick.
"Garbrandt really should win this just on speed alone. The openings are going to be coming right to him on a platter."
DA
Daniel Vreeland Expert Hesitant picked Mar 3, 2026 (4 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Daniel Vreeland reluctantly picks Cody Garbrandt as an underdog, citing his higher level of competition and former champion status. He notes that Garbrandt's chin and cardio are concerns, but he believes Garbrandt has enough to beat a relatively unproven opponent. Vreeland warns that picking Garbrandt is scary but sees value.

"I'll reluctantly pick Cody Garbrandt for the upset."
DI
Diary of a Pro Gambler Expert Hesitant picked Mar 4, 2026 (3 days before fight)
Xiao Long

The host acknowledges Garbrandt is technically superior on the feet but is on a steep decline, with poor durability and gun-shy tendencies. He compares Garbrandt to other declining fighters like Moreno and Cyborg. Xiao Long is a high-volume, tough striker who throws double the strikes per minute. The host would back Long if forced to bet, but personally passes due to Long being average and the possibility of Garbrandt outclassing him.

"I would rather back Long in a fight like that. I'm not going to be betting Long personally."
LU
Lucrative James Expert Lean picked Mar 1, 2026 (6 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

James picks Cody Garbrandt as an underdog, believing this is a massive step down in competition for Garbrandt. He notes Garbrandt's speed advantage and better boxing, and expects him to win round one. However, he acknowledges Garbrandt's poor chin and cardio, but thinks he can survive if he builds an early lead. James sees the fight as close to 50/50, making Garbrandt the value side at plus odds.

"I'm going to actually pick Cody again. It's like if he doesn't get hurt, he's probably going to win."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Mar 3, 2026 (4 days before fight)
Xiao Long

Garbrandt is washed with a compromised chin and cardio. Long is durable, aggressive, and has good takedown defense. After a competitive first round, Long will walk Garbrandt down and likely knock him out in the second or third round.

Long by knockout
"I think this is a bad matchup for Cordy Garbrandt... I think we'll see that come to fruition here as Long knocks him out probably in the second or third round."

Paul Shaughnessy Expert Lean picked Mar 4, 2026 (3 days before fight)

"Give me the plus 125 as well."

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Mar 5, 2026 (2 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

The MMA Guru picks Cody Garbrandt, believing he will outclass Xiao Long at range. He notes Garbrandt's speed and footwork, and predicts a decision or late KO. He acknowledges Garbrandt's inconsistency but thinks Xiao Long is not top-level.

"Cody Garbrandt should [ __ ] really easily outclass this guy at range in a very boring three round decision."
ZA
Zane Simon Expert Confident picked Mar 6, 2026 (1 day before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Zane agrees that Garbrandt should win, emphasizing that Long Zhao is a significant step down from Garbrandt's recent opponents. He notes that Garbrandt has shown some improvement in recent losses, but still has major flaws. He is also surprised by the betting line and thinks Garbrandt should be a healthy favorite.

Surprised by the odds; Garbrandt at +135 is a value pick.
"If Long Zhao beats him, Cody Garbrandt should end his career at once. Cause it's a fight he should not lose."

AN
Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked Aug 17, 2025 (6 days before fight)
You Su-young

Angelo is confident in You Su-young, calling him a nonstop wrestler who shoots takedowns early and is aggressive on the ground. He notes that Xiao Long is a grappler but not particularly dangerous, and that You Su-young is better almost everywhere. He expects a grappling match and leans You Su-young regardless of whether it becomes a striking match or a grappling match.

"I'm going to lean Su Young. If we have a grappling match where they're actually shooting takedowns and stuff, I'm also going to leave towards Su Young. So, I'm picking Su Yong Yu. Pretty straightforward."
BI
Big Brady Expert Confident picked Aug 21, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Xiao Long

Big Brady picks Xiao Long as an underdog, citing his good defensive wrestling and anti-grappling. He notes that Xiao Long stuffed 7 of 9 takedowns against Chungho Lee, who is a strong grappler, and that Xiao Long is the better striker with improved striking. He believes Su-young Yu will struggle to get takedowns and that Xiao Long will win a decision on the feet.

Xiao Long by decision

You Su-young

Connor picks Suyong Yu, citing his straightforward wrestling game and good takedowns. He notes that Long Zhao's wrestling hasn't been tested much and that Suyong Yu's singles and pipe runs could be effective. He acknowledges that if Long Zhao can stuff shots, he could win, but leans toward the wrestler.

"I think I'm inclined to take you just on the simple straightforwardness of his game."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Aug 21, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Xiao Long

The host is a big fan of You Su-young but thinks he will struggle to get the fight to the ground. This will allow Xiao Long to dictate the pace in the striking realm with high volume, winning most pocket exchanges. The host predicts Xiao Long will eventually find a knockout within two and a half rounds.

win by KO/TKO, inside 2.5 rounds
"I think he's going to struggle to get this fight to the ground, and that's going to allow Long Xiao to dictate the pace in the striking realm, putting on a high volume, winning most of the pocket exchanges, and then eventually finding that knockout to get you out of there within two and a half rounds."
TH
The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Aug 22, 2025 (1 day before fight)
You Su-young

The MMA Guru picks You Su-young because he has proven himself against non-Asian competition, specifically outgrappling an American with a wrestling background. He views You Su-young as a specialist with a clear strength, while Xiao Long appears to be a well-rounded regional scrapper. He also notes that Xiao Long's split decision win over a Korean fighter on Road to UFC doesn't impress him, as that opponent didn't amount to much.

"I just think Su Yang Yui has been proven against a non-Asian... I think he's more specialized. I think he's better at one thing than Xiaoong is at a couple different things."
ZA
Zane Simon Expert Hesitant picked Aug 22, 2025 (1 day before fight)
Xiao Long

Zane picks Xiao Long (Long Zhao), noting that he puts offense together and looked improved in his last fight. He acknowledges that Suyong Yu is a good wrestler with solid takedowns, but believes Long Zhao's striking and ability to get up from takedowns could be enough to win. He admits it's a close fight.

"I'm going to go with Long Zhao just because I think he actually puts offense together."

Xiao Long

Angelo picks Xiao Long, noting Quang Le's striking defense issues despite forward pressure. He expects Xiao to shoot takedowns and control on the ground. He admits it's a tough pick and not his most confident.

Xiao Long

Big Brady picks Xiao Long to win by decision. He thinks Quang Le is overrated after his loss to Chris Gutierrez, noting Le had low volume and landed less than 10 significant strikes. He was more impressed with Xiao Long's loss against a tough grappler, where he showed takedown ability and higher output. Brady expects the fight to stay on the feet and favors the more active striker.

Daniel Vreeland sees this as a close fight between Xiao Long's activity and Quang Le's power and impactful moments. AN
Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked Jun 20, 2024 (2 days before fight)
Xiao Long

Angelo sees Xiao Long as the grappler with a wrestle-at-all-costs attitude, durable and composed even when things go wrong. He believes Xiao Long's wrestling is more prominent and that he should have been the favorite, not the underdog. Despite being told he mixed up the fighters, he rewatched the tape and stuck with his read. He notes Xiao Long has 34 fights of experience and stays composed under pressure.

"I think long xia wins this fight I broke this fight down... I don't know why this guy's the dog this guy should be the favorite"

Big Brady Expert Hesitant picked Jun 19, 2024 (3 days before fight)
Lee Chang-ho

Big Brady picks Lee Chang-ho based on his relentless wrestling and never-quit style, which he finds more impressive than Xiao Long's striking. He notes that Lee has a crazy motor and showed a third-round TKO in a Road to UFC fight after his opponent slowed down. However, he expects a close split decision due to both fighters' durability and toughness, making this a hesitant pick.

"I guess I'm going to go with the guy that I was more impressed with which is going to be Chong hoi I just like that style I just like the Relentless non-stop style"
CO
Cody Saftic Expert Confident picked Jun 19, 2024 (3 days before fight)
Xiao Long

Cody picks Xiao Long, citing his experience, takedown defense, and striking. He notes Long has faced better competition in the tournament and has shown the ability to get back up and outwork grapplers. He expects Long to win a decision and earn a UFC contract.

"long xia long I'm surprised long xia is not a slight favorite"

Daniel Vreeland Expert Lean picked Jun 20, 2024 (2 days before fight)
Xiao Long

Daniel Vreeland picks Xiao Long based on experience, having seen him on Contender Series. He admits he is not very familiar with either fighter but goes with the more experienced fighter. He notes Lee Chang-ho's finishes but prefers Long's proven track record.

"I'm gonna go with the more experienced guy here I'm gonna go with long Xiao here to get it done"

Jacob Lines Expert Confident picked Jun 20, 2024 (2 days before fight)
Lee Chang-ho

Jacob disagrees with Angelo, calling Lee Chang-ho the better wrestler who wants to be the 'Korean Khabib.' He highlights Lee's resilience, pointing to his last fight where he was outwrestled for two rounds but never stopped and finished the opponent in the third. Jacob believes Lee's non-stop pressure and finishing ability will wear down Xiao Long, who is not a finisher. He made Lee his lock of the week and placed a moneyline bet.

Lock of the week; moneyline bet placed
"Chang Ho Lee is an absolute [ __ ] dog he is Non-Stop and that is why he was my lock of the week"

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Lean picked Jun 19, 2024 (3 days before fight)
Lee Chang-ho

JP picks Lee Chang-ho based on his 3-0 record in Top Fighting Championship and a 4-fight win streak, noting that Lee has more finishing power with his hands. He sees both fighters as similar but gives Lee the edge in striking and potential to finish. Brevan agrees, citing Lee's stopping power and Xiao's tendency to go to decision, but both are hesitant to bet due to the close odds.

"I think Lee's kind of got the upper hand on that but as far as this the Finish goes I don't know I I'm personally going to pick Lee by KO or decision probably not going to put any money down on this fight"

Paul Shaughnessy Expert Confident picked Jun 19, 2024 (3 days before fight)
Xiao Long

Paul picks Xiao Long, agreeing with Cody's analysis. He notes Long's youth, activity, and improvement since his Contender Series loss. He believes Long's sprawl-and-brawl style will be effective against Lee's wrestling.

"I'm gonna go with xan xan Lee sorry xan long"

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Jun 18, 2024 (4 days before fight)
Lee Chang-ho

The MMA Guru picks Lee Chang-ho over Xiao Long, citing Chang-ho's superior competition and consistent method of victory via ground and pound. He notes that Xiao Long lost to Christian Quinones on the Contender Series and has fought lesser competition. He believes Chang-ho's ground game and top positioning will lead to a second-round TKO.

second round ground and pound TKO
"I'm going to go with Chang hoi um I'm going to pick him to win by Finnish by TKO I think long Xiao is just not the same level of Prospect as Chang Holi."
