Round 1
The first of several undefeated fighters competing tonight is up next, with the submission-minded Vieira (6-0, 1-0 UFC) putting his unblemished record on the line against Dagestani brawler Safarov (9-2, 1-2 UFC) at middleweight. The third man inside the Octagon is referee Jason Herzog. They touch gloves, and after 15 seconds, Safarov finally throws the first strike in the form of a jab. He misses, and similarly comes up short with a front kick while Vieira tries to figure out his timing. Safarov goes to the leg with a kick, and sneaks up a front kick that hurts Vieira. The Brazilian immediately shoots in for a takedown, but Safarov powerfully turns him about and stands up. Vieira closes back in and throws him down, and we see some blood on the nose of Vieira as he takes Safarov’s back. As Safarov tries to fight off the choke attempt and prevent punches, he grabs the glove multiple times, causing Herzog to pause the action for a moment. Safarov then puts his fingers in the fence and Herzog slaps his hand away, before again pulling on the gloves to get out of a choke. As the old adage goes, "if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying." Vieira flattens out his opponent for a moment and slams down a few punches, before taking mount as Safarov rolls to his back.
Vieira sets up a speedy arm-triangle, and hops over to side control to finalize it like a snake devouring its prey. With absolutely no way out, Safarov taps out once and it is unnoticed. He then taps several more times, and Herzog stops the fight.
When “The Black Belt Hunter” stands back up after the fight is called, we see a massive cut over his left eye, and his eye is completely closed while the swelling grows rapidly. Had he not gotten the submission, he could have been in the danger zone, but instead the Brazilian records his seventh win. They have all come by stoppage.
