Demian Maia vs. Belal Muhammad

Round 1
This next match at welterweight is a grappler’s delight, as the legendary submission specialist Maia (28-10, 22-10 UFC) will try to become the first man to tap out the durable Muhammad (18-3, 1 NC; 9-3 UFC). Enjoying this fight with the best seat in the house is referee Jason Herzog, and the two have nothing but respect for one another and touch gloves. Muhammad reaches out with several punches, and the Brazilian is right there to greet him with punches. Maia eats a few on the chin and shoots in low for a takedown, but it gets stuffed with ease. Maia comes out with a solid right hand that surprises Muhammad, and he uses this to pursue a single from afar. The grappling legend keeps the left leg elevated as he continues to pursue it, but he has to abandon it when Muhammad sprawls against the fence properly. Maia goes back after the submission, and he rips Muhammad’s knee out from beneath him to secure the takedown. Muhammad’s eyes are wide as he is surprised that this happened to him, and he walks up to his feet to stand back up. Muhammad lifts his leg all the way in the air to break the grip, and he backs away to get his feet from beneath him. Muhammad answers with a solid right hand, and he pushes away a leaping takedown attempt from Maia shortly thereafter. Muhammad has his leg grabbed again, and he hops back to the fence to keep his balance. Maia eats an elbow as he pursues the single, but Muhammad is able to put his leg down for a moment and pull it back. Maia backs away and evades the punches that come his way, but a left hand finds its home on his chin. A stiff jab from Muhammad backs Maia off, and Maia fakes a takedown to draw out a reaction. Maia puts another attempt on Muhammad with the single, and he lifts the leg up high to take Muhammad down but cannot get it. Muhammad hops to and fro with his back on the wire, and Maia sticks to him like glue as he is intent on putting Muhammad on his back. Muhammad is able to put his leg down to the ground again, and he uses the other to sling a head kick that gets blocked right before the bell.

Round 2
There is a quick glove touch to start off the round, and Maia follows it with a left hand. Muhammad kicks the lead leg and hops back before Maia can snatch it up. The American gets off a few jabs here and there as he tries to find his range and keep a safe distance, timing uppercut feints and marking up Maia’s nose with strikes. Maia lunges forward with a looping left hand that hits nothing but air, and there is a lengthy stalemate as they look for angles. Maia drops down for a low single, and Muhammad sticks him with punches from far out. Maia turns a punch to a takedown attempt in the center of the cage, and Muhammad sprawls and stops it from happening. Muhammad makes him pay with a right hand after breaking up the attempt, and he swats away a few half-hearted punches from the Brazilian. Maia pursues another takedown, and Muhammad jumps far away to get out of harm’s way. Muhammad stings Maia with crisp punch combinations, and he hurts Maia with a right hand as he is feeling more comfortable to let his hands go. Muhammad paws out several left hands to break up Maia’s forward movement, and he kicks the lead leg hard. Maia tries to take him down, but his attempts are more labored and Muhammad sees it coming from a mile away. “Remember the Name” makes Maia remember his fists as he introduces them to Maia’s chin a few times, until Maia charges in for a desperate single leg takedown. When the Brazilian lifts the leg up, Muhammad keeps his balance and stays upright. When Maia tries for one last takedown, Muhammad defends with elbows on the side of the head until time expires.

Round 3
There is one final touch of gloves for the last round, and Muhammad is more comfortable in the center of the cage as he jabs his way out. Maia gets one back, but Muhammad triples up on jabs. Maia dives for a takedown, and Muhammad springs out of danger without much concern. Muhammad gets off a head kick that still does damage even though it is fully blocked, and a right hand hurts the 43-year-old. Maia wings a left hand, but Muhammad’s strikes are more accurate and quicker. There is another head kick from Muhammad, and when it gets blocked, the Roufusport product sticks Maia with a jab. Maia shoots low for a single, and Muhammad does not seem concerned as he stops it once more. Muhammad jabs and continues to redden Maia’s face up, and a clubbing left hand frustrates Maia. Muhammad staves off a feeble single so that he can chain punches together, and he tees off on the fading Brazilian with combinations. Maia can do little but flirt with takedowns, and Muhammad drills him with a shovel uppercut but gets caught with an overhand left. Muhammad pulls his leg back before it gets snagged, and Maia telegraphs these shots every time and does not vary his approach. Muhammad aims a head kick at him, but it too is blocked. Maia crashes forward with a single, and “Remember the Name” posts a stellar takedown defense rate when he stops that one from succeeding. Muhammad protects his leg when Maia latches on to it, punching the Brazilian in the side of the head as Maia lumbers towards him. Muhammad is forced to defend single after single, and Maia lifts the leg but cannot ground him. The gritty fight comes to an end in this position.

Belal Muhammad

Big Brady picks Belal Muhammad, citing his youth, cardio, and volume advantage. He is concerned about Muhammad's untested takedown defense against a grappler like Maia, but believes Maia's age (43) will be a factor. He expects Muhammad to win a decision, possibly 29-28 or 30-27.

Demian Maia

Cody sees this as a dog or pass situation. He notes Maia's age and slow striking but believes if Maia gets takedowns, he can submit Muhammad. He is interested in a small sprinkle on Maia by submission at +400, as Maia has a history of taking down better wrestlers.

Belal Muhammad

Daniel Levi picks Belal Muhammad, stating that no 43-year-old is beating him. He emphasizes Muhammad's pace and cardio, and that Maia's blueprint has been exposed. He expects Muhammad to outwork Maia, especially in later rounds, and predicts a dominant decision. He calls Muhammad the most sure thing among the favorites.

Demian Maia

Maia's jiu-jitsu is a level above anyone Muhammad has faced. Muhammad is a jack-of-all-trades but lacks a finishing threat, while Maia can latch on and submit him. Muhammad's takedown defense hasn't been tested by a grappler of Maia's caliber. Maia's age and cardio are concerns, but he should find a submission in the early rounds.

Maia by submission (+400), Maia by second-round submission

Paul Shaughnessy Expert picked Jun 9, 2021 (3 days before fight)

Paul agrees it's a dog or pass situation. He notes Maia's age and the fact that Muhammad has never faced a wrestler, but he doesn't have a strong lean either way. He is not interested in laying the wood on Muhammad at -230.

"i think it's a dog or pass situation regardless"

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Jun 4, 2021 (8 days before fight)
Belal Muhammad

The MMA Guru picks Belal Muhammad, believing Maia is past his prime with lowered testosterone. He notes Muhammad's cardio, takedown defense, and recent experience against Leon Edwards. He expects Muhammad to lose the first round to Maia's grappling but come back in rounds 2 and 3 with volume, winning a 29-28 decision.

Demian Maia vs. Gilbert Burns

Round 1
In the only bout of the evening between two fighters representing Brazil, two of the most highly decorated submission artists in the welterweight division face off when Maia (28-9, 22-9 UFC) tests his skills against Burns (17-3, 10-3 UFC). Together, the two have submitted a healthy 22 opponents across their 45 victories, and referee Osiris Maia will be the third Brazilian in the cage. They race to the center of the Octagon, and Maia sticks out a jab but it is Burns that throws something of note first, in the form of a right hand that misses. Burns lands a leg kick, while Maia scores a left hook. Burns scores two more kicks, and Maia comes back with that same left. Maia is pushing the pace in Burns, with a left hand that does little more than set up a single leg takedown. Burns nearly welcomes the takedown, fishing for a heel hook before abandoning it to stand up. The former title challenger keeps on him, nearly taking Burns’ back while pushing him against the fence and threatening with another takedown. As Burns tries to roll, Maia fishes for a rear-naked choke, and gets a hook in as Burns fights off the arm that wraps around his throat.
Burns slips out the back door and stands back up before anything comes from it, and blasts Maia with a monster left hook. Maia crumples to the canvas, and Burns celebrates by throwing his arms in the air.
He looks to the referee to call the fight, but none come, so Burns chases after him and swarms him with punches until the ref stops the action. This is an enormous win for Burns, who smashes a top-five opponent with style points, and immediately stakes his claim as an elite fighter in the division.

Gilbert Burns

The host picks Gilbert Burns over Demian Maia. He notes that Maia has not been submitting opponents recently, as seen in his fight with Anthony Rocco Martin. Burns is a three-time BJJ world champion and will be able to stay out of submissions. He expects Burns to win by third-round TKO, as Maia fades in later rounds due to age and weight cut. He calls Burns an underdog but believes he has this fight in the bag.

Angelo Bodetti Expert picked Apr 9, 2023 (6 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

Angelo reluctantly picks Zak Cummings but strongly advises against betting on this fight. He notes both fighters are old (Cummings 38, Herman 42), neither has fought in a year, and neither is athletic or fast. He expects a slow, boring fight going all three rounds and says the only bet is not betting at all.

"Zach's gonna be the pick but who cares who can do nothing with this"
BI
Big Brady Expert Hesitant picked Apr 11, 2023 (4 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

Big Brady picks Zak Cummings by decision, but with low confidence. He calls it a 'mess of a fight' with both fighters old and inactive. He notes Cummings moving up to light heavyweight and a picture suggesting he's not training. He picks Cummings simply because he looked okay in his last fight, while Herman is more washed.

"give me Zach Cummings by Greasy decision where I I bet they're going to go on there and just look at each other for three rounds"

Cody Saftic Expert Confident picked Apr 12, 2023 (3 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

Cody picks Cummings based on speed and volume, noting Herman is old and slow. He thinks Cummings can keep the fight standing and outpoint Herman. He acknowledges both are past their prime.

"I'll go with Zach Cummings because Ed Herman's dust"

Connor Ruebusch Expert Hesitant picked Apr 13, 2023 (2 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

Connor reluctantly agrees with Zane, stating he has absolutely no reason to pick one or the other. He notes that the odds should be fairly even and that Cummings has never won a light heavyweight fight.

"Yeah, I guess I'll go with you. I have absolutely no reason to pick one or the other. Honestly, I just don't know."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Lean picked Apr 11, 2023 (4 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

Cummings is returning from a long layoff and back surgery, which raises uncertainty. However, his style is more reliable than Herman's at this stage. Cummings has better striking and BJJ, and should be able to grind out a decision in his hometown. Herman is 42 and coming off a controversial win. Tough fight to bet, but lean Cummings.

"I'm going to lean with Zach Cummings as I feel like his style is a little bit more reliable."

Paul Shaughnessy Expert Confident picked Apr 12, 2023 (3 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

Paul notes Cummings is smaller and quicker, and should use his speed to out-strike Herman. He thinks Cummings' grappling is good enough to avoid submissions. He expects a decision win for Cummings.

"I gotta go with speed I gotta go with Zach Cummings to just beat him on the feet"

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Apr 11, 2023 (4 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

The MMA Guru picks Zak Cummings, despite his long layoff and weight gain, because he believes Cummings is still a solid well-rounded fighter compared to the 42-year-old Herman who has deteriorated. He notes Herman's recent controversial win and sluggish performance, and thinks Cummings will land good shots and win.

"give me Zach Cummings"

Zane Simon Expert Hesitant picked Apr 13, 2023 (2 days before fight)
Zak Cummings

Zane picks Cummings based on basic math: middleweight is bad but light heavyweight is worse, and Ed Herman is not a typical light heavyweight. He expects Cummings to be the faster guy in a slow-paced fight where both men potshot at each other. He acknowledges uncertainty due to Cummings' back injury and layoff.

"I think I'm just going to pick Zach Cummings and the basic math I'm doing is that, uh, sure. Middle weight is bad, but light heavyweight is worse. And Ed Herman does not fit the bill of your typical light …"

Ed Herman vs. Alonzo Menifield

Round 1
In a sharp contrast to the expectations – and not the impressive result – of the prior bout, the overwhelming belief is that this light heavyweight clash between powerful finisher Menifield (10-2, 3-2 UFC) and savvy, streaking veteran Herman (26-14, 1 NC; 13-11, 1 NC UFC) will end quickly. The betting line for this fight ending inside the distance is the highest on the card at -285. Holding on tight will be referee Kerry Hatley, as this one could end at any minute. There is still a sign of sportsmanship as they touch gloves before trying to take the other’s head off, and Menifield quickly hammers Herman’s leg with a kick. He just misses with a right hand, and Herman dodges and misses a counter. Menifield tries again to throw a bomb of a right hand, and Herman sees it coming and evades it more smoothly this time. Menifield goes after another calf kick, and Herman tries to catch it but cannot grab it. Herman strides forward and gets caught on the way in with a short left hand, and Menifield tries to follow it up with a left hand and a nuclear missile of a right hand but the latter does not connect. Menifield gets off a jab, and he chains one to the body shortly after. Herman sneaks up a check left hook that cuts Menifield, and Menifield suddenly holds his hand high to protect his eye. Herman reaches him with a left hand and Menifield backs off, with the booming shots not coming like before. The head movement from Menifield allows him to avoid a strike over the top, and he wings a hook that blows Herman’s head back. A power jab from Menifield drills into the nose of Herman, and he lands a few more as Herman touches his nose every time one lands. Herman looks to counter him with the left hand, as he knows Menifield is suddenly cautious of these strikes. “Atomic Alonzo” kicks the lead leg and makes Herman turn about, but he does not follow it and instead backs off to absorb a kick from Herman. Menifield sits down on a leg kick and makes Herman turn again, and Herman is now preemptively picking his leg up. Herman takes another and does one more pirouette, and Herman is walking strangely on it as it begins to swell up. Menifield blasts Herman in the face with a left hand, but the Oregon native walks through everything that Menifield throws at him. Both men land single blows, and Herman gives chase but hits nothing but air. Herman tries to lift his leg up from a kick, and he turns his back and lets Menifield land a right hand on him before the round ends.

Round 2
The light heavyweights elect to touch gloves to come out for the round, and Herman rushes to attack. Menifield counters him on the way in, and stops Herman from plodding towards him in another barrage. Herman falls forward and gets clipped with a right hand, and he stumbles but keeps his wits about him. Menifield lands a one-two right on the forehead, and he snaps out a jab that Herman ignores. Herman tries to get off a kick as Menifield wings one at him, and he lifts his leg when Menifield advances and goes right into a right hand. Menifield throws so hard he falls over, and he gives up his back and is suddenly in trouble. Herman takes his back and goes after a choke, but Menifield bursts and stands back up. Herman takes a right hand and may be hurt, so Menifield attacks him and starts wailing away at him with punches. Herman falls into the cage, and he shells up as Menifield lands a long stream of punches and standing hammerfists. Herman blocks most of them but takes a few uppercuts, and he tries to throw back but is met with a looping right hand. Herman tags Menifield with an uppercut, and suddenly Menifield backs off and needs to gather his thoughts. Herman walks face-first into several jabs and right hands, and other than a cut on the bridge of his nose, he appears no worse for wear. His opponent starts to slow, throwing more telegraphed punches at odd angles. Herman charges and absorbs a thunderous leg kick, and Herman can barely stand up as it is so compromised. Herman is forced to switch stances as Menifield stands in front of him, with Herman slowly backing off and blocking when Menifield comes at him with a right hand. Menifield rushes in head-first and tries to sling a right hand over the top, and Herman just misses with an uppercut to respond. Herman whiffs on a right hand, and Menifield kicks his leg out beneath him and forces Herman down to the ground on his face. Herman gets up as the horn sounds, and he struggles as he limps back to his corner.

Round 3
Herman is good to go to keep fighting, and the swelling is enormous on his shin as he can barely put weight on it. The doctor checks on it, squeezes the area, and determines that there are no broken bones. Herman nods when Hatley tells him he can’t fall victim to many more kicks, and the fight continues. Menifield comes out swinging, bullrushing Herman and tackling the longtime vet to his back. Menifield climbs into side control as he slugs Herman in the face repeatedly, and Hatley pays close attention but no stoppage materializes. Menifield backs off to let Herman stand, and although labored, Herman is able to get up. Herman keeps his distance, barely able to stand up at all, and he tries to chamber a right hand but Menifield tees off on him without concern. Herman takes an uppercut on the chin and he wobbles, and together with the busted leg and the blow, he is forced to bounce off the cage to stay upright. “Short Fuse” thinks about moving back to orthodox but he does not want to present the battered leg, and he wings a huge right hand. Menifield eats it like a steak and throws right back, with Herman shaking his head but not budging. Herman flails with a few right hands as the crowd starts to voice its disapproval with how the bout has slowed significantly, and Herman tries to stay active but hits air again and again. Menifield fires off a right hand that collides with Herman’s guard, but it is one-and-done as he is content to just chase Herman around the cage. Menifield slowly walks forward without throwing anything, and he suddenly ducks down and snaps Herman’s head back with a right hand. Herman’s chin cannot be questioned as he takes it without so much as a flinch, and he takes two punches on the chin as he walks forward. Menifield leans forward to throw bombs, and Herman closes in to counter, with the range not allowing either to land flush. Herman dodges a huge right hand to counter Menifield with a right hand, and he sits down on a pair of punches that Menifield shrugs off. Menifield attacks the other leg, allowing Herman to sting him with a punch. Herman walks through a jab to give chase, and the bout shockingly ends from the horn when a full 15 minutes have elapsed. It may be fitting in a night like tonight that the fight most expected to end by decision saw a first-round finish, and the fight most expected to end violently went the distance.

Angelo does not make a clear winner pick. He notes Menifield has power but gasses, while Herman is tough and experienced. He suggests waiting for live odds after round one, as Herman could be a huge underdog if he survives. He bets over 1.5 rounds.

Alonzo Menifield

Big Brady believes Menifield is much younger, more athletic, and has a massive power advantage. He thinks Ed Herman's takedown attempts will be stuffed early, and Menifield will land a first-round knockout. He notes Menifield slows down later, but expects an early finish. He is not impressed with Herman's recent win streak, calling it weak.

Alonzo Menifield

Daniel Levi picks Alonzo Menifield to get an early knockout, citing Menifield's power and the fact that Ed Herman is 40 years old and likely to fade. He acknowledges that Herman is a savvy veteran who could make it interesting if the fight goes past the first round, but believes Menifield has improved from his losses and will finish Herman early. He also notes that Herman has been stopped by body shots recently, which plays into Menifield's strengths.

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Aug 5, 2021 (2 days before fight)
Alonzo Menifield

Menifield has tremendous knockout power and should land early. Herman is 40 years old and has been finished before by knockout. Menifield's best chance is a first-round KO, as his cardio is questionable. If Herman survives the first round, he could have success later, but Menifield is likely to get the finish early. The moneyline at -250 is too steep, so the KO prop is the play.
