Pat Sabatini vs. William Gomis
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Sabatini (-205), Gomis (+170)

Round 1
An interesting stylistic clash will move the prelims along, with grappling ace Sabatini (21-5, 8-2 UFC) ready and willing to burst out after 10 previous walks to the cage. He will square off with MMA Factory product Gomis (15-3, 5-1 UFC), with the two featherweights under observation by referee Vincent Dudley. Fists are bumped before they are traded.
The taller Gomis marches forward, watching Sabatini kicks fly past him. Sabatini shoots in low for a single, forcing Gomis to the wall and hurling him to the floor. Gomis climbs back up but is still in the arms of his opponent. This strategy totally stifles the Frenchman, with Sabatini controlling and not needing to take the fight down to keep Gomis from landing anything. Johnny Cage, the Pennsylvanian isn’t, as he would much rather wrestle than throw hands, feet, elbows or his sunglasses.
Gomis turns to put his shoulder on the fence and try to escape, but he is stuck without answers. Sabatini slugs him a few times in the face with his free hand, otherwise controlling for long stretches at a time. Little else happens while they do this. Sabatini goes low for a single, briefly dragging Gomis to a knee. Gomis stands, and Sabatini complains to Dudley that his glove is being grabbed. Dudley clears Gomis from any foul, and while they are paying attention to the referee, Sabatini slings Gomis to his seat. Gomis tries for a few elbow strikes from a funny angle, and the slog of a round wraps.

Round 2
Gomis walks Sabatini down to start the round, but he does not commit to anything as he knows a takedown attempt is coming. Sabatini feints, fakes and works his way forward to back Gomis off, and he shoots in on his hips. Gomis stands him up by putting his back to the cage wall, with Sabatini leaning on him kneeing him once or twice. Sabatini lifts Gomis’ left leg all the way in the air to set him down on the canvas, but he can only keep Gomis down for a second or two before he is back up. Sabatini lifts Gomis off the ground completely to slam him on his face, and once more, Gomis is speedy at rushing back to his feet. The grind is firmly embraced by Sabatini, as he has controlled and neutralized the Frenchman largely to this point.
Gomis times the right moment to escape, and he takes a right hand on the beard as he resets. Gomis kicks Sabatini in the groin, and Sabatini waves him off and keeps plodding forward. Sabatini loops a right hand, a left, and a jumping switch kick behind it. Gomis times a body kick when he is landing, and he just misses a head kick to follow. Sabatini ducks a one-two to attack a takedown, pushing Gomis to the fencing to defend it. He holds Gomis in place, but does not ground him. With 15 seconds left in the round, Gomis breaks out. They clash kicks at the same time, and both trade fierce hands before the horn blares.

Round 3
The athletes touch gloves, and Gomis wants to punch him in the face directly thereafter. They clash leg kicks together, their shins slamming together loudly. Gomis loads up on power, hoping for the home run blow as he is likely down on the scorecards. Two takedown shots from Sabatini fail, and Gomis stands him up with a flush elbow on the cheek. Sabatini, swelling growing under his left eye fast from that elbow, plods forward threatening and faking strikes on his way in. He dives after a single, pushing Gomis to the fence with three-plus minutes left on the clock. Fans do not appreciate the ubiquitous grappler who is somehow able to get all over Gomis and completely overwhelm him with his approach at once.
Gomis knees him in the stomach, and he gets dragged down to the floor on his face. Sabatini briefly grinds Gomis face on a part of the canvas with blood drops on it that make a pattern reminiscent of a gruesome ladybug, and Gomis fights as best he can to stand back up. Sabatini chains attempts to hit mat returns, and otherwise rips precious seconds off the clock. Gomis gets space with seconds left and starts throwing hands wildly like a spinning top. Sabatini rocks him with a right hand, and the grueling contest ends. Gomis raises his hand in hopes that he sneaks out two of three rounds to get the unexpected nod. We’ll see what happens.

Expert Picks (14)
AN
Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked May 3, 2026 (6 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Angelo picks Pat Sabatini, citing his dominant wrestling and takedown ability. He notes Sabatini took down Chepe Mariscal seven times and expects similar against Gomis. He says Gomis can be taken down and lacks one-punch knockout power, so Sabatini faces no risk of being KO'd. He loves the minus 133 odds and thinks it's a dominant win.

Angelo mentions the odds are minus 133 and he absolutely loves those odds.
"Pat Sabatini is the pick and unless he decides to go out there and showcase to a hometown crowd and start only throwing hands, it's not going to be an exciting fight, but it should be a dominant one that cashes at very solid odds."

Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked May 6, 2026 (3 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Angelo is confident in Pat Sabatini, noting his incredible grappling and control. He believes Sabatini will take down William Gomez repeatedly and that Gomez's slow technical style won't be enough to stop the takedowns. He mentions that Sabatini has looked incredible lately and that the odds are good value.

"Pat's going to be the pick and I'm definitely more confident than these odds are in him."

Big Brady Expert Confident picked May 6, 2026 (3 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Big Brady is confident Pat Sabatini wins, citing his elite wrestling and control. He notes Gomis lacks power and has been taken down and put in bad spots before. Brady expects Sabatini to get takedowns and secure a submission, specifically a second-round submission, as Gomis has shown vulnerability to submissions.

"I actually think Pat Sabatini not only wins this fight, but potentially gets a submission as well. I'll take Pat Sabatini to win this fight by second round submission."
CO
Cody Saftic Expert Confident picked May 6, 2026 (3 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Cody picks Sabatini, citing his wrestling and submission skills. He notes Gomis's takedown defense issues and thinks Sabatini can control him on the ground. Cody expects Sabatini to win by submission or decision.

Sabatini by submission (plus 200)
"Sabatini by sub has my attention, too, because it's like plus 200."

Connor Ruebusch Expert Hesitant picked May 8, 2026 (1 day before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Connor picks Sabatini, believing his wrestling is good enough to get takedowns and control the fight. He notes that Sabatini is a better wrestler than others who have had success against Gomis. Connor expects a razor-thin decision, possibly a split, but thinks Sabatini's dedication to his game plan will earn him the nod.

Sabatini opened at -270, now -200; Gomis opened at +230, now +170.
"I'll take Sabatini for the hell of it."

Daniel Vreeland Expert Confident picked May 8, 2026 (1 day before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Daniel picks Sabatini, reasoning that Gomis is a point fighter who doesn't dish out much damage, so Sabatini will take him down and control him on the ground. He believes Sabatini's grappling will be the difference.

"I'm also going Sabatini. The reason why is the way to beat him is to put the damage on him. And Gome is very good point fighter, but point fighter, he doesn't really dish out too much damage. I think he's going to be on his back for the majority of this fight."
DI
Diary of a Pro Gambler Expert Confident picked May 8, 2026 (1 day before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Sabatini has home advantage and a relentless grappling style that will smother Gomis. Gomis is a volume striker who needs distance, but Sabatini will either be far outside or in the clinch/takedown range. Gomis has poor takedown defense and takes a long time to get back up; he's been in many split decisions. Sabatini's cardio allows him to grapple for three rounds. Unless Gomis has significantly improved his takedown defense, Sabatini should control the fight.

Bet at 1.46 odds (implied -216). No stake mentioned explicitly, but implied from context. No other props.
"I think that Pat Sabatini is a great bet this weekend for lots of different reasons... I do like Sabatini a lot this weekend. I know he's a big favorite... 1.46 minus 216 for an implied probability of 68% is a steep price to pay. But on this occasion, I think it's a price worth paying."

FightingPost AI Expert Lean picked May 9, 2026 (fight day)
Pat Sabatini

Predicted method: Submission Round 2. Sabatini's grappling-heavy style (4.48 takedowns per round, 1.5 submission average) is a clear path to victory against Gomis, who has only 72% takedown defense and has been taken down multiple times. Gomis has a reach advantage (73" vs 70") and solid striking, but Sabatini's pressure and top control will neutralize that. Sabatini has won three straight and is a proven finisher on the ground. Expect Sabatini to secure takedowns and win by submission or decision.

Jacob Lines Expert Confident picked May 6, 2026 (3 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Jacob agrees with Angelo, stating that Gomez will either land a knee or headkick on an entry or get taken down and controlled. He praises Sabatini's wrestling and control, noting that Gomez is comfortable fighting off his back foot but that Sabatini's pressure and takedowns will be too much. He thinks the price is about right.

"I just think Williams probably going to land a knee or he isn't. And then if he's not, you know, I think it's priced pretty right."

Lucrative James Expert Confident picked May 3, 2026 (6 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Lucrative James picks Pat Sabatini because he believes Sabatini's grappling will be too much for William Gomis, who is a pure striker without power or strong takedown defense. He notes that Gomis prefers to stay on the outside, which plays into Sabatini's game of closing distance and taking the fight to the ground. He predicts Sabatini wins by submission in round two.

"Pat Sabatini to win this fight. ... via submission."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked May 5, 2026 (4 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

The host picks Sabatini, emphasizing his dominant grappling and ability to control opponents on the ground. He notes that Sabatini's striking is a liability but believes his wrestling will be too much for Gomis, who has shown defensive grappling improvements but may struggle to keep the fight standing. He expects Sabatini to win by decision, possibly at a better price if the line moves.

"I'm still going to go with Sabatini here."

Paul Shaughnessy Expert Confident picked May 6, 2026 (3 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

Paul picks Sabatini, citing his grappling advantage and Gomis's vulnerability. He thinks Sabatini will get takedowns and control the fight. Paul expects Sabatini to win by decision.

"Pat Sabatini is the man. Now how does he lose fights is when he doesn't shoot the takedowns."

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked May 7, 2026 (2 days before fight)
Pat Sabatini

The MMA Guru picks Pat Sabatini, praising his elite grappling. He notes Sabatini dominated Shep Mariscal and Joe Anderson Britto, while Gomis had close fights with Britto and others. He worries about Sabatini's chin on the feet but believes his takedowns and top control will secure a decision win, possibly 30-27 or 30-26.

"I'm going to go with Pat Zabatini to get this one done. Also, William Gomez, um not Clayton Carpenter."
ZA
Zane Simon Expert Hesitant picked May 8, 2026 (1 day before fight)
William Gomis

Zane picks Gomis hesitantly. He notes that Gomis is a back-foot neutralizer who can make Sabatini work hard for takedowns. However, Gomis is not a finisher and may not do enough to win rounds decisively. Zane thinks Sabatini's one-dimensional wrestling could be neutralized, leading to a close decision, but Gomis's ability to avoid damage and counter could edge it.

Sabatini opened at -270, now -200; Gomis opened at +230, now +170. Feels like a coin flip.
"I think I am still going to pick Gomes."

Angelo picks William Gomis, believing he can win either by aggression or point fighting. He notes that Ruchała is hittable and that Gomis has good defense and smooth movement. He also mentions that Gomis might get a favorable decision in France. He thinks the odds are widening too much and that Ruchała is not a bad fighter.

The host acknowledges Ruchała's successful KSW run but thinks he will be behind as Gomis is the sharper, faster, and slicker striker. He expects Gomis to shut down Ruchała's early grappling threat and win on the scorecards.

Hyder Amil vs. William Gomis
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Gomis (-198), Amil (+164)

Round 1
Hoping to keep his flawless record intact, Amil (10-0, 2-0 UFC) puts his 0 on the line against surging Frenchman Gomis (14-2, 4-0 UFC). Both men sport most of their pro wins by knockout while each holding a single victory via submission, while their respective chins have never been broken. If something’s gotta give for this featherweight collision, referee Chris Tognoni will make sure it is done on the up-and-up. A clap of hands leads to Amil surging forward with a high kick. When Gomis responds with a high kick, Amil grabs it and tries to hurl the Frenchman to the mat. Gomis fights out of it thanks to a fence grab, and when they separate, Tognoni makes sure to admonish him for that. Amil bears down on Gomis, slinging a right hand and shooting for a single. Gomis keeps himself upright with the wall at his back, sneaking in a knee when Amil is jockeying for position and trying to change levels. They trade knees in the clinch until splitting up, and Amil advances aggressively and dodges a flying knee to loop a right hand over the top. Gomis skirts away and kicks the body, staying elusive and evasive enough to dodge all but a big right hand from “The Hurricane.” Amil presses on Gomis again, doing some work until Gomis escapes again. Amil keeps after him, kicking the front leg until they once more clinch. Gomis breaks free with solid knee, and Amil does not back off and continues crowding him. Amil strikes with an elbow, Gomis responds and then spins with a back elbow that opens up a cut on the corner of Amil’s left eye. Gomis spins with a back fist, and goes to the well with another in rapid succession, spinning about to crack the unbeaten fighter with a right hand. Gomis scores and Amil fires back, and Gomis tries for one more spin. Amil shrugs it off and throws caution to the wind to engage, whipping a kick up high before the bell.

Sherdog Scores
Jay Pettry scores the round: 10-9 Gomis
Brian Knapp scores the round: 10-9 Gomis
Dayne Fox scores the round: 10-9 Gomis

Round 2
The fighters tap their hands and get right back to the furious melee, with Amil cracking Gomis right out of the gate and swinging with everything he has. Gomis steels himself and batters the front leg a few times, backpedaling and eating a low kick as Amil blitzes him with punches that lead to a clinch. When Gomis changes levels, Amil slings him to the mat, and they both get up and start trading. Gomis busts Amil in the chops, but he does not slow him one iota. Tognoni warns for grabbing the gloves as they are going after it, and Amil continues pressing the action as if he was double-parked. Gomis spins with two back fists and keeps turning to drill the body with a kick, and Amil laughs them off and busts Gomis in the chops with a fierce right hand. Amil is fearless and not wilting when taking damage coming forward, as Gomis is accurate and making him pay any time Amil gets a bit too reckless. Gomis uses his head movement to sway around a few punches, but Amil dings him with an inside low kick and an overhand right. Gomis flashes out a right hand, chewing up Amil’s lead leg but not making him think twice about advancing. Amil scores with a big right hand, and they trade body kicks. Amil overswings, resulting in a clinch, and he knees Gomis in the face when Gomis leans over. Amil loads up with five right hands, and Gomis bides his time to counter with a massive right hand that stuns Amil. Amil keeps plodding ever forward, throwing punches in bunches and landing cleanly on the French fighter. Gomis bounces on his feet to shake it off when he resets, and Amil is on him before long putting hands on him. Gomis drills his man with a back fist, and Amil stays in his grill punching him with everything he has. Amil shoots suddenly for a double, and when it fails, he backs away to adjust his knee sleeve. Amil then charges in again, looping a left over the guard and pushing Gomis to the wall. Amil digs a knee to the thigh before the wild round ends.

Sherdog Scores

Round 3
The featherweights come out swinging, taking full advantage of the 60-second respite so they can return to action. Amil does just what he did for the last 10 minutes, crashing forward throwing bombs. Gomis keeps his back to the wall, sticking his man with shots and prepping counters when he can muster them. Amil walks through punches that would fell lesser men so that he can swing back even harder. Amil gets clipped by a right hand and pushes Gomis back, and they go after one another’s lead leg with several kicks. Amil digs a kick to the body, drawing a smile out of the French fighter. Amil lets go with three right hands, and Gomis spins awkwardly with an elbow. Amil is on top of him putting punches on his target, and Gomis targets the body on hopes of slowing him down. Amil grips hold of a double, scooping Gomis up and depositing him gingerly to the canvas. Amil climbs on top in a quasi-half guard, with Gomis on his side trying to wriggle out, Amil flattens him out briefly and swarms him with left hands, and he switches to get off some right hands around the guard. Gomis gets to a knee with Amil draped behind over his back, and he explodes back to his feet. Gomis sticks out long punches to gain some space, and Amil swings for the bleachers from up close. Gomis attacks the body and gets off an uppercut, and Amil completely ignores it to drill Gomis with a crisp uppercut. Gomis has to actually shove Amil away to get just a second to breathe, and Amil is back in his face with volume to any target he can find. This is bonkers, the pace these two are putting in and the damage they have both not only sustained but ignored. The strike totals are high and extremely close, and Amil is aggressive as can be. Gomis strings several punches together, and Amil guards from them and strikes the body. Amil sells out with a throw that puts Gomis on the ground, and the French fighter gets back up. Amil relentlessly walks his man down, and they let it go right until the final bell sounds. What a fight.

Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked Feb 23, 2025 (6 days before fight)
William Gomis

Despite his personal dislike for Gomis, Angelo picks him because he is more tactical and well-rounded everywhere except raw power. He believes Gomis will outpoint Hyder Amil with his Muay Thai and opportunistic grappling, though he admits Amil's forward pressure could steal rounds. He suggests betting on Gomis to overcome his bias.

Betting on Gomis to overcome personal bias

Hyder Amil

Big Brady leans toward Hyder Amil, despite the wide line. He notes Amil's high volume, pressure, and ability to win in multiple ways (KO, submission, decision). He criticizes William Gomis for being boring and defensively responsible but lacking offense. He predicts Amil will put a pace on Gomis and finish him in the third round by KO.

Hyder Amil

Connor picks Amil as a fun flyer, noting that Amil is a violent, unthinking aggressor who can hurt Gomis early. He compares Amil to Sean Porter and notes that if Amil fights the fight that Joanderson Brito should have fought, Gomis can lose. Connor admits Gomis is a better neutralizer but takes the chance on Amil's power.

Same odds commentary as Zane.

The Guru picks William Gomis over Hyder Amil. He dismisses Amil's undefeated record, calling his wins unimpressive. He praises Gomis's performance against Joanderson Brito and his win over Francis Marshall. He predicts Gomis will pick Amil apart at range and get a late finish in the second or third round.

Zane picks Gomis, seeing this as a classic neutralizer vs. unthinking aggressor matchup. He notes that Amil is a wind-up toy who doesn't adjust, and Gomis's style of backing up and tying up should work. Zane acknowledges that Gomis can be hurt but believes Amil will walk into his clinch game repeatedly.

Gomis opened -203, now -182; Amil opened +154, now +161.

Joanderson Brito vs. William Gomis

Round 1
Paris native and MMA Factory staple Gomis (13-2, 3-0 UFC) is firmly in the hearts and minds of the majority of the fans in the building in this “featured fight of the night” slot. However, he stands across from Brito (17-3-1, 5-1 UFC), a veritable featherweight wrecking machine who has crushed his last five foes. Keeping his head on a swivel for this one will be referee Rich Mitchell, although the fighters touch gloves before the ferocity begins. Brito advances rapidly, parrying a few front kicks so he can crowd the local. Gomis sticks out a jab and slides away from a winging right hand, and he boots the Brazilian in the side. Brito swings his way into a clinch, with Gomis glad to turn him about so he can lean on him and take some of the sting out of his offense. Brito decides he does not want to deal with this and he scoops Gomis up and flips him over. Brito attempts to take back control while they are shifting, but he falls the wrong direction and lands on his back. Gomis resides in the guard of his foe, smothering and looking for positional improvements over inflicting damage thus far. Brito sits up, but he is unable to get upright. Gomis drags him back down flat, and Brito hooks his toes in the cage to turn himself over. Brito pursues an armbar off his back, and Gomis fights out of it and flattens his chest down on top of Brito’s. When Gomis advances, Brito scrambles at that exact moment to fight to his feet. Brito looks for a single of his own, and he bails on it to go for a sneaky right hand up top. Gomis ducks it, and Brito ties him up again. The two jockey for position, and Brito is smiling and laughing while watching video of himself on the big screen. Gomis tries and fails to toss Brito down, and Brito knees him flush in the belly before being warned for grabbing his opponent’s shorts. Gomis turns him around and knees him repeatedly, and Mitchell asks for more activity from the Frenchman. Gomis elevates Brito but cannot deposit him to the mat, with Brito’s balance keeping him upright. When they separate, Brito is frantic, lashing out with big punches and kicks. A massive right hand from “Tubarao” hurts Gomis, and he hunts him down and jumps guard for a guillotine choke. Before he can complete it, the horn sounds.

Round 2
Unsurprisingly, the two fighters go right after it as soon as Mitchell says “fight.” Brito swarms Gomis, throwing with everything and the kitchen sink until he gets so close to Gomis that he elects to pursue a takedown. The Brazilian wrestles the underdog to the mat, where he lands in side control raining down right hands. Brito keeps swinging until Gomis turns to the side, and Brito latches on with an arm-triangle choke from an odd angle. Brito lowers himself down to try to complete the submission, and Gomis signals a thumbs-up to indicate he is fine. Brito changes angles, and he moves himself to half guard while squeezing with all his might. Once more, Gomis shows Mitchell a thumbs-up, and Brito looks surprised that he cannot choke his foe out. Gomis is still fine, so Brito bails on it. Brito pounds on Gomis with free left hands, and Gomis sits up and gets to his knees. Brito belts him in the chops with a left hand, and Gomis explodes upright. Brito leans heavily until Gomis bursts out of the position, and Brito walks him down. Brito connects with a few hard calf kicks, and he winds up his right hand to get the French fighter’s attention. Gomis takes it on the chin and retains his composure, and Brito tightly presses himself against his opponent instead of getting completely reckless. Mitchell tells Brito he needs to do more than hold, and it is Gomis who completes the break with a knee on the chin. Gomis backs off and boots Brito in the face with his foot, and he targets the body with a kick and nearly takes Brito’s head off with his shin. Brito responds with his own kicks, and the two trade vicious leg strikes until the round concludes.

Round 3
The featherweights clap hands after 10 minutes of action, and then resume kicking one another mercilessly. Gomis catches Brito on the way in with a right hand, and he backs away and raises his guard when Brito whips a kick at him. Brito plods forward and hammers the front calf with a kick, and he sprints his way in to land another. Gomis counters him with a left hand, and Brito has to shake it off. The Frenchman lets go with is hands and a kick, and he sneaks in another power punch to intercept his marauding opponent. Brito walks through it and loads up with even bigger, more telegraphed power, and Gomis is sniping him and keeping him from hurting him. A Brito leg kick gets his adversary’s attention, and Gomis pushes him to the fence. Brito smiles to Mitchell as he takes a breath with his back on the cage, and he wriggles out of the grasp and into a front kick. Brito scores a low kick and eats a left, and he walks square into a thudding body kick. Brito keeps chasing and missing, with few strikes but his leg kicks landing cleanly. Brito stops an ankle pick from getting anywhere, jamming Gomis against the wire and going after a single. Brito wrangles Gomis down to his seat, and Gomis tugs on the fence to prevent himself from going to his back. With Brito at the right angle, he slugs Gomis in the side of the head and moves around to the back to load up with high-amplitude knees to the thigh. Brito has his hands clasped around the waist, not giving Gomis a modicum of space, all while working on him with any offense he can muster. Gomis gets in a knee before Brito dives after a single, and Gomis defends with a guillotine that he uses to drag Brito to the floor. Brito climbs up with 10 seconds to spare, and Gomis kicks him square in the head. One more high kick from the French fighter punctuates a tense and exciting battle.

Angelo picks Joanderson Brito, calling him the most dangerous guy at this weight class. He notes Brito's ability to finish by KO, submission, or leg kicks. He worries about Brito's cardio since he hasn't been to a decision in a long time, but believes his insane pressure will overwhelm Gomis, who is low volume and may not handle the pace.

Cody picks Brito due to his physicality, power, and grappling advantage. He notes that Brito is always aggressive and finishes fights early. However, he expresses concern about Brito's cardio and the possibility of Gomis evading him with footwork. Despite the trap potential, Cody believes Brito's strength and pressure will overwhelm Gomis.

Connor Ruebusch Expert Confident picked Sep 26, 2024 (2 days before fight)
Joanderson Brito

Connor picks Brito because he believes Brito's overwhelming physicality and pressure will be too much for Gomis, who relies on a range striking game without a jab. He notes that Gomis has struggled against fighters who simply storm forward, as seen in his close fights with Yannis Ghemmouri and Frank Marshall. Connor points out that Brito is a game-breaking athlete who has crushed technically superior fighters like Jack Shore. He sees no clear path to victory for Gomis.

Odds: Brito -288, Gomis +242. Connor suggests Brito should be a much bigger favorite, possibly -500.

Zane points out that Gomis's wins have been close decisions against lower-level competition, while Brito has crushed fighters like Jack Shore. He believes Brito's crude but effective pressure will overwhelm Gomis.

Yanis Ghemmouri vs. William Gomis
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Gomis (-220) vs. Ghemmouri (+180)

Round 1
It’s France-on-France violence as the main card carries on, with the second of two matchups totally flipped on its head thanks to a few fighter withdrawals. Instead of Gomis (12-2, 2-0 UFC) vs. Lucas Almeida at 145 pounds and Ghemmouri (12-1, 0-0 UFC) taking on Loughran at bantamweight, Gomis and Ghemmouri square off. While he had to come in 10 pounds heavier than expected, Ghemmouri seems otherwise prepped and ready to make his promotional debut, but he is not favored to get his hand raised. Odds do not make fights, and referee Loic Pora knows that more than most people. The rebooked countrymen sportingly bump their fists together, and Gomis hand-fights early to not let Ghemmouri get his range. With Ghemmouri in orthodox and Gomis fighting southpaw, it allows Gomis to let loose with body kicks to the liver. He does just that, and Ghemmouri responds with multiple leg kicks on the outside. Gomis paws out a left hand, and he eats another chopping kick to the knee. The two trade kicks, one after the other. Gomis tries to double up on his strikes to outpace his foe, and the second gets caught. Ghemmouri just misses with a high kick, and Gomis springs out of the way to dodge one to the midsection. Gomis pokes out a few jabs and sticks a kick to the side, and the pace is largely in this kick-for-kick approach. Both men test one another with these kicks, and Gomis stomps down on the knee when he attacks a few times. Ghemmouri has a head kick blocked, and he avoids a spinning back kick with ease. Ghemmouri keeps his hands high to guard against a sudden high kick, and Gomis stands in front of him with his hands down. Gomis stomps the knee effectively, hyperextending the joint of Ghemmouri momentarily. Ghemmouri misses the mark with a head kick, and he shrugs at Gomis when Gomis continues chewing up his leg. When Ghemmouri goes high with his shin, Gomis intercepts him with a right hand. Ghemmouri tries to catch a kick, and it bounces up and into his cup. Pora offers the fouled fighter time to recover, but Ghemmouri tells him he is good to go. Gomis snaps into action with several punches and a kick, and he races back to block the coming strikes as the round ends.

Round 2
The second round begins right where the two left off, smacking one another with kicks in alternating fashion. Gomis looks to push the pace earlier, and he outvolumes Ghemmouri in the early going but is still absorbing plenty that come back at him. Ghemmouri is inaccurate with a hook kick, and Gomis blitzes him with a solid right hand. Ghemmouri walks into a head kick, and he tries to clinch up only to get cracked with an elbow. Gomis leaps forward with a punch, and Ghemmouri snatches up his leg and goes after a single. “The Jaguar” jumps back to the wall, and he sets up a standing guillotine choke and keeps it tight. Gomis turns the choke into a power guillotine, and he jams Ghemmouri down to the floor. Ghemmouri appears to tap out once on Gomis’ hip, but Pora is on the other side and does not see it. Ghemmouri powers his way back up, his neck still in danger, and Gomis is hanging tight with it. Gomis presses hard in the posture until Ghemmouri pulls his neck out and turns the MMA Factory fighter around. Ghemmouri settles down, pressing Gomis against the cage, and thumping him with shoulder strikes and a solid knee to the body. Ghemmouri knees the body and they split apart, where they proceed to jab at one another using their feet. Gomis stays active with a low kick and one upside the face, and Ghemmouri wags his finger at him. Ghemmouri hops forward into a kick on the thigh, and Gomis replies with two right back. Gomis tries to swarm ahead with two looping punches, and he has a jumping switch kick bounce off the guard. Gomis spins with a back kick to the ribs, and the horn sounds.

Round 3
The Frenchmen high-five and then hug, and the crowd gives it up to them after a spirited 10 minutes of combat. Gomis leads off with a few stomping kicks to the knee, and Ghemmouri looks to catch a leg kick and go after a takedown. Although he cannot snag hold of a limb, he does rumble forward into a clinch that pushes Gomis to the wire. Gomis answers him with a sudden high knee, and Pora promptly tells them to do more. Gomis gets free first, and he blocks a big head kick. Gomis turns his hips into a leg kick, and Ghemmouri does not like this one and he switches stances briefly. Ghemmouri races forward in pursuit of a single, and he lifts Gomis’ right leg up and jams him against the fence. Pora asks for more action, and Gomis splits off again and lets loose two kicks to the body.
The second kick skims up and brushes the cup as it strikes on the belt line, lifting Ghemmouri off the ground, and Ghemmouri groans and bends over in pain. Pora shouts to Ghemmouri that it was a legal strike and that he needs to keep fighting. Ghemmouri protests that the kick landed on his groin, and Pora waves the fight off to declare it a knockout instead calling time for an illegal strike.
Ghemmouri is beside himself, upset and confused and angry that he has now officially suffered the first knockout loss of his career under controversial circumstances. The replay booth reviews the footage and upholds Pora’s ruling that the kick was legal, and the fight result stands for the time being.

Levi acknowledges that Gomis has low volume and has nearly been submitted in both his UFC fights, but he believes the physicality will be too much for Ghemmouri, who is moving up from bantamweight on short notice. Levi expresses frustration that he missed a great dog spot on Ghemmouri against a different opponent, but here he favors the bigger man.

"I gotta go with gomis man"

Lucrative James Expert Lean picked Sep 2, 2023 (fight day)
Yanis Ghemmouri

Lucrative James is fading Gomis, having bet on Ghemmouri at +210. He feels Gomis's style doesn't warrant being a -300 favorite, especially against a power striker. He notes the fight is competitive and that Gomis wins on slim margins, as seen in his fight against Francis Marshall where he almost got finished. He also bet on Ghemmouri in his previous fight against Lofran.

"I've actually bet gamori as well so I'm fading Gomez I just feel like Gomez's style doesn't ever warrant him to be minus 300 minus 200."

William Gomis

I'm picking Gomis to win by decision. He has a good mix of striking and grappling, and I expect him to use his grappling to overwhelm Ghemmouri. However, this fight is a pass for me because Gomis went from a +200 underdog to a -250 favorite, which feels like a market overcorrection. Ghemmouri is still a question mark. I'd rather take Gomis over 2.5 rounds.

Gomis over 2.5 rounds

Paul Shaughnessy Expert picked Aug 30, 2023 (3 days before fight)
No clear pick

Paul calls this a dog or pass situation, noting Gomis's extremely low output (27 and 32 significant strikes in his two UFC fights) and that his wins came against questionable competition. He says he'll wait for weigh-ins to see the size difference but leans Ghemmouri if forced to pick. He mentions the fight was made last minute so only moneyline is available.

"I think it's a dog or pass situation here Cody I'll be waiting for Wayans"

William Gomis vs. Francis Marshall
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Marshall (-205), Gomis (+175)

Round 1
Styles clash in this 145-pound affair, when the rear-naked choke minded Marshall (7-0, 1-0 UFC) attempts to keep his flawless record intact when he meets diverse striker Gomis (11-2, 1-0 UFC), out of the MMA Factory in Paris. Referee Keith Peterson is on his best nonsense-slaying behavior, ready to intervene at a moment’s notice. The two fighters bump fists in the center of the cage, and Marshall is very active with his jab right out of the gate. Marshall follows a few jabs with range-fighting straight right hands, and Gomis darts out of the way and sticks him with a straight left. Gomis slaps a kick to his foe’s midsection as they stand in alternating stances, and he fires off another as Marshall fires off an overhand right that dings the Frenchman. Marshall presses forward, and he swings all his might into another right, and this results in a clinch and not a successful strike. Marshall pushes off and circles away, and he just avoids a front kick aimed at his jaw. They both land with long punches at the same time, and neither show any ill effect. When Gomis throws a high kick, he loses his balance, but Marshall allows him to stand so that he can keep jabbing at him. The jabs from Marshall are not actually landing, but they are reaching towards his foe, while Gomis occasionally responds with power kicks from his left leg. The kick draws immediate swelling on Marshall’s right cheek, which is lumped up in a hurry. Marshall times a right hand as Gomis goes after another kick, and he swats with a left hook as Gomis escapes. Gomis whips another kick to the midsection, and he attempts to connect with an uppercut as Marshall crashes towards him in pursuit of a takedown. Gomis defends with his back against the wall, and Marshall settles down and presses on him as he knees the thigh and stomps the toes. The round ends in this tie-up.

Round 2
The featherweights clap hands in the middle of the Octagon, and Marshall darts at him with swatting left hooks to begin. Gomis chambers his left hand and fires once in response, as he has that hand cocked back regularly waiting for a chance to unload. Gomis tosses out a low kick from either leg, and he sticks his foe with a jab. Marshall leans forward to throw, and Gomis is elusive and dodges the successive strikes while planting the ball of his foot on Marshall’s chest. Gomis ties his foe up, and Marshall is quick to turn him around. Instead of stalling, Marshall shoves off and gets back to boxing range. Gomis thanks him for this with a straight right hand down the pipe, and Marshall blinks it out and misses with a counter. Gomis slips and moves, getting off a jab or two but little else for offense. The French fighter chips at the lead leg with a kick, and Marshall is struggling to find his target regularly. Gomis stays on the outer edge and paws out a front kick, and Marshall times a right hand over the top but is one-and-done with it as Gomis slides away. Gomis punches into a high kick, and the guard is high enough to defend it. They swing at one another and largely do not connect, with Gomis’ elusiveness and range keeping him out of action both offensively and defensively. Gomis reaches Marshall with a few punches, and he counters a left hook with a front kick that jams into the cup. Peterson calls it and lets Marshall recover, and Marshall needs only a few seconds before he is good to go. When clocked back in, Marshall swings at air, and Gomis pecks and pokes at him with a few punches and a leg kick to end the tepid round.

Round 3
The hands are clapped to start off the round, and Marshall pushes the pace but still cannot lock Gomis down. Gomis slips strikes, occasionally counters, and flusters the undefeated fighter as seconds slowly fall off the clock. Marshall sits down on a right hand, and Gomis rolls with it and ducks away. Gomis gets off a stomping front kick on the knee when Marshall bears down on him, and he suddenly fires off a jumping switch kick that nearly catches Marshall on the chin. Marshall gets pushed away with the kicks of the Frenchman, but Gomis’ blows are not particularly damaging either. Gomis slides out of the pocket until Marshall bull-rushes him, and he manages to lift Gomis in the air and throw him to the floor. Marshall gets a hook in when Gomis returns to a knee, and Gomis leans to put both hands on the floor to protect his face from getting kneed. Marshall mat returns him partially, and Gomis leans up against the fence to stay upright. Marshall hangs onto his opponent, seemingly taking full advantage of the fact that he can put his hands on his foe, and he jumps straight into back control. Marshall snatches up a rear-naked choke and wraps his arm on the chin, and he crushes with all his remaining energy reserves. Gomis fights off the first attempt, and the second to follow, and he turns to his back as Marshall hammers him with an elbow. Marshall jumps to mount and sets up an arm-triangle choke, and the French fighter answers this by leaning to his side and breaking up the submission. Gomis turns to his knees, and Marshall pounds on him and stops Gomis from scrambling until the horn blares. It likely will be too little, too late for the currently and soon-to-be no longer undefeated man from New Jersey.

He acknowledges Gomis' counter-striking and sneaky power, but thinks Marshall's aggression and power will prevail. He is undecided on betting but may include Marshall in small parlays.

Francis Marshall

Big Brady picks Francis Marshall to win by decision. He notes that Marshall has more forward pressure and aggression on the feet, and is the harder hitter. He also thinks Marshall will be the better wrestler, as he has seen Gomis taken down before. Brady acknowledges that Gomis is solid but believes Marshall has more dog in him and will pressure, take down, and control the fight to a decision win.

Cody picks Marshall, praising his youth, potential, and training under Kurt Pellegrino. He notes Marshall has power and grappling skills, and his takedown defense is better than Gomis'. Cody believes Marshall will pressure Gomis and win exchanges, possibly by finish. He acknowledges Gomis could use movement and jabs, but doubts he can maintain it for 15 minutes.

Francis Marshall

Connor picks Francis Marshall, describing him as a super aggressive swarmer who leads with his jab and has good shot selection. He notes that Marshall is well-schooled in his aggression and has takedown defense. Connor contrasts this with Gomis, who is a slick but lackadaisical striker who relies on clinch work. He believes Marshall will overwhelm Gomis and not let himself be controlled.

"I got to pick Marshall."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Apr 17, 2023 (5 days before fight)
Francis Marshall

Francis Marshall has superior North American wrestling and should be able to shut down William Gomis' clinch-based takedowns. Marshall showed improved striking in his UFC debut and has power. Gomis relies on kicks and clinch grappling, but Marshall's underhooks and reversals will neutralize that. Gomis has been hurt in previous fights and his desperation takedowns won't work against Marshall. Marshall should control the fight and win by decision, with a possible finish.

The MMA Guru picks Francis Marshall, though he notes it's not a lock. He was unimpressed by William Gomis's debut and thinks Marshall is a more promising prospect. He believes Gomis leaves himself open with unorthodox techniques and that Marshall can catch him with a straight punch. He predicts a KO in the second round after a competitive first round.

Zane Simon Expert Confident picked Apr 20, 2023 (2 days before fight)
Francis Marshall

Zane also picks Francis Marshall, agreeing that Gomis's striking requires escape valves that Marshall won't allow. He notes that Gomis is a weird Muay Thai fighter who throws single strikes but lacks fluidity, and that Marshall's single-minded aggression will find openings. Zane believes Marshall's wrestling and scrambling will prevent Gomis from controlling the fight.

"I just think that Gomes isn't going to have the escape valves and his striking requires escape valves."

Jarno Errens vs. William Gomis
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Gomis (-220), Errens (+195)

Round 1
Two UFC neophytes will take center stage on a surprisingly high placement on the main card, with MMA Factory product Gomis (10-2, 0-0 UFC) aiming to be the last fighter to get on the board for France until the main event. He will square off against recent Brave CF victor Errens (13-3-1, 0-0 UFC), with the winner hoping to impress the bosses in this matchup booked on quite short notice. Both happy to be inside the UFC cage for the first time, the featherweights happily touch gloves as referee Jason Herzog waits in the wings. Errens pushes the pace, but he gets struck first when Gomis lets go with a body kick. Errens cautiously approaches his foe, as they are both tense and coiled to strike. Gomis misses a front kick, and Errens darts forward with a straight right hand to the body. Gomis reaches out with a couple leg kicks, and he blocks a high kick that darts at him. The Dutch fighter goes for a spinning wheel kick, and Gomis sees it coming and is well out of the way. Gomis blasts the body with his shin, and Errens tries to punch the same spot in response. Gomis continues to work the body with his legs, and he is forced to back off as Errens leaps at him with a flying knee. Errens checks a kick and punches his way in, but Errens is able to swat it away and stomp the knee with his heel. They go kick for kick low, until Gomis crashes the pocket with a few swarming punches. Gomis gets grabbed in the clinch, but he manages to put Errens on his back through sheer power. In the full guard, the Frenchman can do little more but hang on, as Errens clings to him tightly. Errens scoots his back to the wall, and he opens his guard as he considers a triangle choke. The angle is such that he cannot set anything up, so Gomis holds on and punches him once. Errens grips the wrist to protect himself from harm, and he gets bulled and smacked with an elbow and a few short punches before threatening with a double off his back. The attempt allows Errens to stand back up, and Gomis jams him up against the wall. They trade knees, and one bounces off a cup but there is no pause. They break apart, and Gomis lets fly kicks with both legs until the horn ends the round.

Round 2
A touch of gloves starts off the second stanza, and they are tentative to trade like the previous round. Gomis strikes first with two looping punches, and he blocks a counter kick with his knee and jumps with a switch kick. Errens pushes forward, throwing hands, and the crowd begins conflicting chants for each man. Errens catches Gomis with a knee, but he does not capitalize and slowly works his way in while Gomis backs off. Gomis jumps forward with a superman punch, and Errens clocks him with a counter right. Gomis is staggered but still remains upright, and he shoots in only to get met on the way down with a flying knee. Gomis still powers through it, possibly hurt badly from the concussive blow, but he manages to ground the Dutchman. Errens scoots his back to the wall again, but his closed guard is preventing him from escaping. Gomis is comfortable in this position, occasionally landing strikes but more content to nullify his opponent. Errens sits up and turns to a side, but Gomis pushes him back over. Errens puts his feet on Gomis’ hips to kick him off, and when they both stand back up, Errens begins to trade. The Dutch fighter plods forward with a stream of punches, only to be backed off when Gomis kicks high at him. Gomis fires an inside thigh kick that slides up to the cup, and they do not break, so Herzog tells them they are even in terms of uncalled groin strikes. Gomis shoots for a takedown, and Errens rolls all the way through and even gets mount for a second. “Jaguar” keeps moving, doing enough to fight all the way to his feet again and in pursuit of a takedown once more. Gomis has his hands clasped around the waist, and Errens counters with a judo through only to get turned to his back once more. The round ends in this position.

Round 3
Double high-fives and a hug start off the last round, and the two featherweights motion to the crowd to let their voices be heard. The audience begins to chant as Gomis starts his offense, kicking while fighting off his back foot. Gomis turns his hips with a body kick, and Errens meets him with punches to the face and two more to the body. The Frenchman threatens with a flying knee and a spinning back kick, and the latter slams into the side of Errens. Errens takes it and keeps coming forward, half-checking a low kick so that he can crack Gomis with a right hand over the top. Gomis clinches up and turns Errens to the fencing, where he begins to knee the thigh repeatedly. Herzog asks them to work as they stall out, so Gomis replies by lifting Errens up with a powerful double and setting him down gingerly. Errens defends when he hits his back with a guillotine choke, only to bail on it when Gomis wriggles his neck out of harm’s way. Errens tightens up a body triangle from off his back, and Gomis breaks it by slamming his fists into Errens’ jaw. Errens drags his backside to the wall, and he keeps a high guard with a possible triangle or armbar setup as he attempts to roll for a sweep. Gomis is tightly pressed to him and keeps him trapped, and he opens up with heavy punches to the body and elbows to the jaw. Errens keeps working and turns to his side, but Gomis is able to toss him back over. As Gomis scrambles to maintain top position, Errens flings his legs up and traps Gomis in a triangle choke. Gomis stands up, and in the process, allows his right arm to be snagged with a triangle armbar. The Frenchman slowly but calmly slides his neck out, and the crowd goes wild for Gomis’ smooth escape. Gomis moves to half guard and stays in that position until the horn blares. Even if the next two French fighters end up suffering defeats, France has beaten the world with three wins tonight for five fighters.

William Gomis

Angelo picks William Gomis because Gomis is a counter-striker and Errens likes to come forward, which plays directly into Gomis's strength. He notes Gomis has solid clinch work and is well-rounded, but warns the odds are too wide and Errens is legitimately good. He advises not to look at the betting line and make a decision, and does not consider Gomis a parlay piece.
