Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked Jun 12, 2022 (6 days before fight)
Cody Stamann

Angelo picks Cody Stamann, citing his well-rounded skills, wrestling background, and pace. He notes Stamann averages almost 3 takedowns per fight and has no problem getting in his opponent's face. He acknowledges Eddie Wineland's experience and danger but believes Stamann's wrestling and pace will be the difference.

"cody stayman is the pick here but proper respect should be shown to somebody as experienced and as dangerous as eddie weinland"

Cody Stamann

Big Brady picks Cody Stamann to win by second-round knockout. He acknowledges Stamann is a wrestler but believes he can outstrike Wineland, who has poor striking defense and a weak chin. He notes Wineland's takedown defense is historically good, but Stamann's power and Wineland's decline make a knockout likely.

second round knockout
"I'm actually going to pick stamen to knock out weinland um kind of a hot take but kind of not really"

Cody Saftic Expert Confident picked Jun 15, 2022 (3 days before fight)
Cody Stamann

Cody picks Stamann, noting his tough competition and advanced skill set. He thinks Wineland's chin and reflexes are gone, and Stamann will win by decision or TKO. He suggests waiting for weigh-ins due to Stamann's weight cut issues.

"i think cody stamen is probably top ticket if not second ticket material"

Daniel Levi Expert Confident picked Jun 16, 2022 (2 days before fight)
Cody Stamann

Daniel Levi confidently picks Cody Stamann, noting Eddie Wineland is damaged goods at 38 and has been knocked out by lesser fighters. Stamann is a competent, well-rounded fighter who wins rounds, though he rarely finishes. Levi expects a unanimous decision but acknowledges the -700 price is not worth betting. He simply states Stamann is the pick.

Stamann -700 is too high to bet; expects decision
"cody stamen's the pick you know it doesn't take much courage or smarts to pick a minor 700 favorite"

Paul Shaughnessy Expert Confident picked Jun 15, 2022 (3 days before fight)
Cody Stamann

Paul agrees, noting Wineland's age and recent KO losses. He thinks the UFC is giving Stamann a favorable matchup and he should win easily. He also suggests waiting for weigh-ins.

"i think the ufc is totally doing the guy a favor"

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Jun 13, 2022 (5 days before fight)
Cody Stamann

The MMA Guru confidently picks Cody Stamann, calling it a no-brainer. He notes that Eddie Wineland is 37 and has taken a lot of damage, while Stamann is younger and has good grappling. He expects Stamann to use his wrestling to secure takedowns and ride out a 30-27 decision, as Wineland is a veteran unlikely to be submitted but unable to stop the grappling.

"cody stamen's going to get this one done against eddie wineland i just don't see first of all eddie weinland being able to stop the grappling of cody stamen at this point in his career"

Eddie Wineland vs. John Castaneda

Round 1
Former WEC champ and marvelously mustached Wineland (24-14-1, 6-8 UFC) will try to prove he still has something left in the tank against ex-Combate Americas staple Castaneda (17-5, 0-1 UFC) at bantamweight. The third man inside the Octagon is referee Jason Herzog, who sees the two men touch gloves before throwing down. Wineland leads off with an oblique kick to the knee, and he walks forward only to take a front kick to the side. Wineland aims another one of these low kicks, and he lets fly a head kick right after it. As Castaneda replies with a right hand, Wineland is on him with kicks. A one-two from Wineland makes him get comfortable, and he fires off another head kick that gets blocked. Wineland puts together a combination ending with a leg kick, and he takes a leg kick to loose a right hand. Wineland walks through low kicks to chain punches together, and he gets off a body kick. Castaneda is struggling to find his range, backed up against the fence until he crashes in and may have clashed heads to clinch. Wineland gains separation and sits down on several punches, where he gest Castaneda’s attention and may have hurt Castaneda’s nose. “Sexi Mexi” once more charges into a clinch, but Wineland is not having it, instead preferring to strike at his range. Wineland ignores a leg kick and weaves back to avoid a looping head kick, keeping his hands low and letting go with a body kick. As Wineland is about to fire off a right hand, he gets halted with a front kick. Wineland redoubles his effort and scores a right hand, but Castaneda rings his bell with a quick counter. The former WEC champ, who keeps changing stances and moving his hands all over, is befuddling Castaneda but not avoiding all strikes coming his way. Castaneda gets off a left hand that marks up Wineland’s nose, and Wineland gives him one right back. Wineland aims a punch to the body, uses head movement and pushes Castaneda over when Castaneda throws a head kick at him. Wineland dives down when Castaneda is on his back to land a big right hand, but “Sexi Mexi” rolls through and gets back up. Castaneda tries to connect with a leg kick, and Wineland greets him with a straight right hand. Wineland stutter-steps his way forward, eating a quick left hand but bearing down on Castaneda with punches.
Castaneda is able to keep him at bay for the most part, chipping at Wineland with low kicks until he slings a right hand that rocks Wineland. Castaneda knows his man is hurt, and in rapid succession, he gets off a half dozen punches that knock Wineland back into the fence and down to a knee. Castaneda keeps on the pressure with a final bombardment of punches, and Herzog has seen enough.
The stoppage, which is questioned by Wineland as soon as the former WEC champ gets back to his feet, is unquestionably the biggest victory of Castaneda’s career.

John Castañeda

Daniel Levi respects Eddie Wineland's career but notes he fights with his hands down and has been knocked out badly in recent fights. He thinks Castañeda, though not overwhelming, can be slightly more active and durable. Levi believes Wineland might be gun-shy coming off the knockout loss to Sean O'Malley. He picks Castañeda to edge a decision, but acknowledges that a prime Wineland would smoke him.

Sean O'Malley vs. Eddie Wineland

Round 1
Kicking off the pay-per-view main card is yet another one of those bouts pitting an up-and-coming prospect of “Sugar Sean” O’Malley (11-0, 3-0 UFC) against former WEC champ Wineland (24-13-1, 6-7 UFC) at bantamweight. Will O’Malley remain undefeated, or can Wineland show that he is not a spent force at 35? Like referee Herb Dean, we will find out very soon. Wineland comes out charging hard, and O’Malley starts with a few low kicks and just misses with a head kick. Wineland takes a few more kicks up the middle while trying to close the distance, and the vet is looking to land that big right hand. Wineland ducks another head kick, and whiffs on a right while stalking him down. Wineland tries to swing his way in, and O’Malley ducks away and bounces off the fence before scoring with a solid right hand and two kicks to the body. Wineland cracks him with a right hand, and he stands O’Malley up and makes him backpedal. Another thumping right lands on the shoulder, and O’Malley visibly reacts to the shot. O’Malley recovers and scores a spinning back kick, and then a body kick. He clips Wineland with a right hand at the end of that exchange, and backs off to reset. O’Malley fakes with an uppercut, unloads a blistering right hand on the jaw, and Wineland crashes to the canvas. It’s good night Irene! The former champ is out cold, and O’Malley walks away to celebrate. Seeing that Wineland is done like dinner, Dean indeed stops the fight, and this is by far the biggest win of O’Malley’s career. The “Sugar” show keeps on rolling, ladies and gentlemen.

Big Brady Expert Confident picked Jun 3, 2020 (3 days before fight)
Sean O'Malley

Big Brady confidently picks Sean O'Malley by first-round knockout, citing Wineland's poor striking defense and O'Malley's power and volume. He notes Wineland holds his hands low and is hittable, and O'Malley should exploit that. He thinks the fight stays on the feet and O'Malley finishes early. He considers the line too wide to bet but suggests looking at the KO prop.

O'Malley by first-round knockout; O'Malley KO prop

Daniel Levi Expert Confident picked Jun 4, 2020 (2 days before fight)
Sean O'Malley

Daniel sees a clear stylistic advantage for O'Malley because Wineland fights with his hands down and chin up, which plays into O'Malley's counter-striking. He recalls betting on Johnny Eduardo to beat Wineland for the same reason. He predicts O'Malley will knock Wineland out, likely in the first round, citing O'Malley's speed, accuracy, and creative striking.

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Jun 4, 2020 (2 days before fight)
Sean O'Malley

Sean O'Malley has a significant reach and height advantage, and his movement and kicking should keep Eddie Wineland at range. Wineland is a heavy puncher but telegraphs his shots, and O'Malley's footwork should allow him to avoid danger. O'Malley will likely take a measured approach, working the outside before opening up. The over 1.5 rounds is also a good play.

The MMA Guru picks Sean O'Malley over Eddie Wineland. He believes O'Malley is on a different level, too quick and rangy for the older Wineland. He predicts a first-round KO, noting that Wineland's win over Grigory Popov doesn't prove he's back. He also discusses O'Malley's marketability and the need for impressive finishes.

Grigory Popov vs. Davey Grant

Round 1
Hot on the heels of the UFC's 500th event, we turn to Moscow for an early morning of fights. We begin this trek at the bantamweight division, where Russia's Popov (13-3, 0-1 UFC) searches for his first win inside the Octagon against Grant (10-4, 1-3 UFC). Our referee to kick off the card is Vyacheslav Kiselev. We touch gloves -- something we did not see very often at UFC 244 last week -- and we are now underway. Grant hops forward and throws a few low kicks, and Popov tries to return and whiffs. The Brit sneaks in a side kick, and then spins for a spinning back kick. Utilizing another couple stepping side kicks, one goes a little low so Kiselev pauses the action momentarily. We resume, and Grant changes his attack to swing heavily for one to the calves of the Russian. He lands another, and Popov takes it without issue. Grant scores one more of those side kicks to the torso, and he is very elusive dancing around the edge of the cage. As Grant comes in to kick again, Popov looks to counter, so suddenly Grant hits a takedown and gets his man down. As Popov scrambles, Grant stands up to drop down some heavy ground-and-pound, but Popov is able to get to his feet. The Brit very much wants this fight to take place on the canvas, so Popov lands a few sharp elbows but Grant drags him to the floor once more. From his back, Popov wings some power elbows, and as Grant tries to avoid damage, Popov spins out and briefly ends up on top. Grant breaks free and the two get back to their feet. Although Grant just barely misses with a spinning wheel kick, Popov gets out of the way in time as the two men trade body kicks to conclude the round.

Round 2
A tap of gloves begins the second frame, where Popov is now on the outside circling away trying to find his kicking range. As Popov jabs from the outside, Grant leaps in with a knee, and partially connects as Popov bounces off the cage wall. A solid leg kick from Popov is check, and Popov adjusts his stance as they trade kicks again. Once more, Grant catches Popov in the cup, and Popov protests that Grant needs to be more careful. We pause, Grant is warned, and we resume rather quickly. Popov, who seems to be irritated by the low blows, chases Grant down with kicks. As Popov commits to a body kick, Grant times a perfect right hand counter right on the button, and Popov practically ignores it. As they jockey for position, Popov gets Grant down, but Grant swings around and snags hold of Popov's back. Unable to land any strikes of merit, he does manage to briefly put all of his weight on Popov to pull the Russian down, and is low on Popov's back. Popov takes advantage of the position and sets up a kimura. Although he cannot secure the submission, he reverses position and switches to an armbar. Grant tries to hook his leg to hold on and break up the attempt, and he pushes off the fence and turns over to end up on top, free of danger. Standing up to rain down a long punch, Popov rolls with the position and gets on top -- albeit briefly. The round ends with Popov on his back trying to score some elbows.

Round 3
The two men embrace to start the last round, and after kicking at one another, it is now Popov that catches Grant in the cup. The kick is much more emphatic than the previous two by Grant, and Grant is in pain but shakes it off faster than he probably should. Popov is apologetic, and we start up again. Risking another low blow, Popov rips a high inside leg kick that bothers Grant. As the Brit shoots in for a takedown, the Tiger Muay Thai standout catches him with a knee on the way in. Grant presses forward, possibly dazed, and still manages to hit the attempt. Popov rolls out of it and pulls for a leg lock, and Grant grabs the cage multiple times to try to get out of position and his hand gets slapped away. Grant survives, and we are back on the feet for about three seconds before Grant dives in for a low double leg takedown. This time, Popov grabs the fence to try to get up, but Grant pulls the legs out as he eats elbows for his efforts. Popping back up, Popov stings Grant with a big right hook, and then a short left elbow. Grant has notably slowed, and Popov is trying to chase him down but the Brit gets out of the way of any significant offense. As Grant tries for a side kick like he landed well in the opening round, it has little power on it so Popov shrugs it off and presses forward. With mere seconds left, Popov flies at him with a kick, but the fight is now over.
