King Green vs. Jeremy Stephens (160: Missed Weight)
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Green (-340), Stephens (+270)

Round 1
They may have nothing in common, but Green (34-17-1, 1 NC; 15-12-1, 1 NC UFC) and Stephens (29-22, 1 NC; 15-19, 1 NC UFC) are both grizzled, battle-tested veterans—not the type who would be saving Private Ryan, mind you, but gladiators who have faced a veritable who’s who in the sport over the years. Both men celebrate exactly 15 wins inside of the Octagon, and they would very much like one more. Referee Gary Copeland will supervise the proceedings of this catchweight affair, one outside of standard weight classes because Stephens biffed weight by four pounds. He gives up 30% of his purse to Green but no glove touch.
Green’s hands are down the moment the fight begins, and he already is chattering at Stephens trying to encourage him to come in at him. Green points at Stephens after Stephens whiffs. He sneaks in a right hand, and he circles to the side towards Stephens’ power side. Green takes a punch off the forehead and pauses, but it does not take long for him to get going again. Stephens misses by a mile with a haymaker, and Green is comfortable hanging out in boxing range. Stephens kicks his for in the front leg, and Green kicks him in the side and gets clinched. Stephens drills Green with a right hand on the break, and Green signals that it did not land flush. Green stabs a kick to the liver, and he pump-fakes his way in to draw reactions. Green staggers Stephens with a left hand, and he knows it and rifles off three more fists in a hurry. Green winds up with a body kick, but it smashes into Stephens’ groin. Stephens grimaces and Copeland calls time. Stephens looks to work out the pain, and Green immediately goes to apologize. Copeland issues a hard warning to Green, and Stephens is good to go after about 80 seconds. Green again apologizes, and Stephens is good with it as they resume. Stephens stalks Green down, and Green’s hands remain down while he is chirping at him. Green lands a right hand and a kick to the body, and he points at Stephens’ stomach and leaps at him to hit a quick double and put Stephens on his back.
Green starts bombing on Stephens when on top, unleashing a long stream of punches and elbows while sitting on his leg in a quasi-half guard. Green keeps thumping up Stephens with his free left hand, and Stephens doubles up his wrist control on Green’s left arm for a straight armlock or kimura. He twists it to become a kimura to go for a sweep, and Green fights it off and steps into mount to batter Stephens with ground-and-pound.
Green transitions into a rear-naked choke in the blink of an eye when Stephens turns, and he rolls to the back to lock it down. Green only has one hook in as he wrenches on the submission, but it is so complete that he does not need the other. Stephens briefly considers going out on his shield but that would be silly. Stephens gives up
, and it is not so much a train that ran him over as it is the Polar Express, with this one-sided shellacking ending with a mean choke. Falling short again, Stephens removes his gloves and may have left him in the center of the Octagon to say farewell to the sport. It is hard to tell with the promotion wholly focused on the triumphant Green.

FightingPost AI Expert Confident picked May 9, 2026 (fight day)
King Green

Predicted method: Decision. Green is the younger, more active fighter with superior striking volume (6.38 SLpM) and accuracy (53%) compared to Stephens, who is 38 and has lost four straight. Stephens has power but is hittable (3.14 SApM) and has poor takedown defense (62%). Green's 72% takedown defense should keep the fight standing, where he can outwork Stephens with combinations and movement. Stephens' only path is an early KO, but Green's durability and pace should carry him to a clear decision or late stoppage.

King Green

Jacob is confident in King Green, citing that Jeremy Stephens is 1-8 in his last nine fights and hasn't had a knockout since 2018. He believes Green's wrestling and smarter fighting style will be too much, and that Stephens looked clueless on the ground against Mason Jones.

Lucrative James Expert Confident picked May 3, 2026 (6 days before fight)
King Green

Lucrative James confidently picks King Green because he sees Jeremy Stephens as a knockout-or-bust fighter who is 1-8 in his last nine MMA fights. He believes Green's boxing and volume will overwhelm Stephens, who lacks the cardio and durability to win a decision. He predicts Green wins by decision, noting Stephens' toughness but inability to keep up with Green's pace.

"I'm definitely taking Bobby Green to get the win. Decision is my prediction."

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked May 7, 2026 (2 days before fight)
King Green

The MMA Guru picks Bobby Green, expecting him to pick apart Jeremy Stephens with boxing. He notes Green's recent wins over Daniel Zellhuber and close fight with Fiziev. He thinks Stephens is past his prime and Green will mix in takedowns. He predicts a decision win, though he initially says TKO then corrects to decision.

"I'm going to go with Bobby Bobbert Baratheon Green over Jeremy Stevens by TKO in the second or Nah. Decision."
ZA
Zane Simon Expert Confident picked May 7, 2026 (2 days before fight)
King Green

Zane picks Green confidently, citing his speed, length, and footwork advantage over the older Stephens. He notes Stephens has lost his kicking and wrestling, and is no longer a knockout artist. Zane believes Green can use reactive takedowns like against Zell Hoover to neutralize Stephens. He sees it as a slow-down version of Green's win over Nasrud Hockbrost.

Odds: Green opened -200, now -375; Stephens opened +170, now +310.

Mason Jones vs. Jeremy Stephens
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Jones (-600), Stephens (+440)

Round 1
Stephens enters to massive pop from his hometown crowd, and hopes to give them something to keep cheering about against fellow returnee Jones. Mike Beltran draws his first referee assignment of the evening, and the lightweights go to work in matchin orthodox stances. Stephens is throwing hooks with mean intentions right away, but he scores first with a hard leg kick. Jones is composed, however, moving laterally and tagging “Lil Heathen” with a variety of fast kicks from both sides. Jones goes upstairs and a head kick glances off Stephens’ guard. Jones connects with a body kick, then a spinning back kick to the head. None of them have landed with a ton of impact, but the speed and accuracy are there. Stephens catches Jones with a hard right hand, which leaves a visible swelling under the Welshman’s eye. They clinch, and Stephens fires off a couple of murderous-looking uppercuts that have Jones backing away hastily. Jones steps back in and lands an uppercut of his own. Stephens wades forward, and his punches look to have slowed just a bit. Jones takes Stephens’ back standing, hoists him with a rear waistlock and deposits him on the canvas. Stephens scrambles back up, but Jones elevates him for an easy mat return. Jones stays on Stephens’ back this time, and with under 30 seconds to go he tries a rear-naked choke. It’s wrapped up but not under the chin, and time expires.

Sherdog Scores
Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Jones
Brian Knapp scores the round: 10-9 Jones
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Jones

Round 2
Jones and Stephens meet in the center of the cage and flurry with punches. Stephens lands a good one and the crowd erupts. Jones fires back and they clinch. Stephens lands a nice uppercut in close. Jones tags Stephens with a glancing head kick and just slips a right hook coming back his way. Stephens throws another right, and Jones has just barely escaped disaster from that punch several times already in this fight. Jones lands a flying knee, followed by a level elbow, and Stephens is bleeding from the hairline. Stephens throws a salvo of punches, several of which connect, and Jones loses his mouthguard. Jones is bleeding from the face as well. The crowd is deafening as the two men swing away in phone-booth range. Jones lands a spinning back kick to the head, and Stephens steps in to land a clean counter punch. Stephens throws a straight to the body that hurts Jones and has him backing off. Stephens surges forward and takes Jones’ back standing. Jones spins to face his opponent and hauls Stephens to his knees, lands briefly in mount, then jumps on his back as he turns away. Short time left in the round once again, and once again the horn sounds with Jones in back control.

Sherdog Scores
Ben Duffy scores the round: 10-9 Jones
Brian Knapp scores the round: 10-9 Jones
Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Jones

Round 3
The Des Moines crowd roars as Stephens and Jones come out for the final frame, and they pop further when Stephens lands a nice right hand in the opening exchange. Jones staves off further punishment—and quiets the arena—by changing levels for an easy takedown against the cage. Jones lands in Stephens’ guard, but Stephens gets back to his feet. Jones drags Stephens back down, spins through north-south, and grabs Stephens’ left arm with a two-on-one, looking to isolate the limb for an armbar. Stephens locks his hands and defends, with Jones kneeling over his head and trying to wrench the arm out. Jones gives up on the armbar and moves to Stephens’ back. Stephens explodes to his feet and Jones drags him back down, to scattered boos from the crowd. Jones laces the legs of the seated Iowan at the base of the fence, and is close to landing in full mount. Stephens gets back to this feet yet again, and Jones yet again responds by "dragon" his man back to the ground. Under a minute left to go and Jones gets back control, then takes mount as Stephens spins around. The final horn sounds with Jones in full mount near the cage and the Des Moines crowd sounding off in discontent.

Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked Apr 27, 2025 (6 days before fight)
Mason Jones

Angelo expects Mason Jones to pick apart Jeremy Stephens with superior boxing and takedowns. He notes that Stephens is exciting but slower and will likely be taken down multiple times. He does not predict a finish but believes Jones will win a clear decision.

"Mason Jones is the pick."
BI
Big Brady Expert Confident picked Apr 29, 2025 (4 days before fight)
Mason Jones

Big Brady is very confident in Mason Jones, calling it a mismatch. He highlights Jones's well-rounded skills: BJJ black belt, great striking, volume, power, and toughness. Stephens hasn't fought in MMA since 2022, is 38, and looked bad recently. Brady expects Jones to take Stephens down and finish him quickly, predicting a first-round submission. He notes that if Jones stands and bangs, it gives Stephens a puncher's chance, but still favors Jones.

Round 1 submission
"Give me Jones to win this fight. I'll take him to win it by first round submission."

Connor Ruebusch Expert Confident picked May 1, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Mason Jones

Connor agrees with Zane, noting that Jones's aggression and clinch wrestling will be too much for Stephens. He compares Stephens's decline to his loss to Clay Collard, where aggression wore him down. Connor believes Jones can take Stephens down and keep him there, as Stephens's ground instincts are poor. He calls it a fight that feels like PFL filler but expects Jones to win.

Same odds commentary as Zane.
"I'm taking Mason Jones as well. If Clay Collard can beat the shit out of Jeremy Stevens, it was the aggression that really wore him down and that's all Jones does."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Lean picked May 1, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Mason Jones

Jones is younger and closer to his prime. He will mix up his game to wear down the 39-year-old Stephens and eventually secure a dominant position for a ground-and-pound TKO or submission.

TKO or submission
"I have to lean with the youth and being closer to his prime with Mason Jones as I expect him to mix up the game well enough to really wear down the soontobe 39year-old and then eventually securing a dominant position to either get a ground and pound TKO finish or a submission victory."

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Apr 30, 2025 (3 days before fight)
Mason Jones

The MMA Guru picks Mason Jones, citing his well-roundedness, wrestling, and granite chin. He believes Jeremy Stephens is too old and has been focusing on BKFC and boxing, so his grappling will be rusty. He predicts Jones will win by TKO on the ground, possibly after using his taekwondo to back Stephens up. He thinks Jones should be a 3-to-1 favorite, not -575.

TKO on the ground, should be 3-to-1 favorite
"I'm going to go with Mason Jones getting this one done. He may get hit a few times, but I reckon he'll tough it out."
ZA
Zane Simon Expert Confident picked May 1, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Mason Jones

Zane picks Jones, emphasizing that Stephens has been a lost cause in MMA for years, with declining foot speed and takedown defense. He notes that Jones is an aggressive brawler who pressures well and has never been knocked out. Zane points out that Stephens hasn't knocked anyone out in MMA since 2018 and is susceptible to pressure and wrestling. He believes Jones will swarm Stephens and wear him down.

Odds: Jones -609, Stephens +426. Zane thinks the odds are way too high for Jones, who is not a dominating force.
"I have to pick Mason Jones... Jeremy Stevens hasn't knocked anybody out in MMA since 2018... there's just a lot of ways to fight around Jeremy Stevens."

Mateusz Gamrot vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1
The Octagon experience between Stephens (28-18, 1 NC; 15-17, 1 NC UFC) and Gamrot (18-1, 1 NC; 1-1 UFC) is a chasm of 31 bouts, although Gamrot did serve as a two-division KSW champion prior to joining the UFC in 2020. The lightweights will toe the line before referee Mike Beltran, who knows a firefight may erupt before his very eyes. The intensity is palpable as there is no touch of gloves, and instead the two men race to the center of the cage to establish dominance. Gamrot shoots in low for a leg to take Stephens down, and after the Iowan hops around, Gamrot quickly puts him on his back. Stephens rolls to his side, and Gamrot threatens with a kimura but he winds up in kimura danger of his own.
Gamrot spins around and takes an inverted triangle position, and he resecures the two-on-one wrist control to wrench the kimura. “Gamer” torques the arm behind Stephens’ back with everything he has, and Stephens has no choice to tap out lest his shoulder get ripped to shreds.
What an impressive performance for the Polish fighter, who becomes the first man to tap out “Lil Heathen” since Joe Lauzon in 2009 at UFC Fight Night 17.

Cody is high on Mateusz Gamrot, praising his well-rounded skills and experience in KSW. He believes Gamrot's grappling and cardio will wear down Jeremy Stephens, who is moving up to lightweight. Cody expects Gamrot to win by decision, noting that Stephens' power is a threat but Gamrot's relentless pressure and takedowns should prevail.

Jeremy Stephens (150.5: Missed Weight) vs. Calvin Kattar

Round 1
On any other card, this matchup between Stephens (28-17, 1 NC; 15-16, 1 NC UFC) and Kattar (20-4, 4-2 UFC) would be near the top of the billing, which speaks to the depth of UFC 249. This potential all-action catchweight bout -- Stephens missed weight by 4.5 pounds -- will be officiated by referee Jason Herzog, and the two strikers do not touch gloves and decided to start engaging early. Stephens leads off with a flurry, and he is loading up on shots right out of the gate. A low kick from Stephens goes a little low, and he swings with reckless abandon as Kattar shells up. Stephens is landing frequently with leg kicks to both sides, although Kattar finally fires back at him. Three punches from Kattar surprise Stephens, but “Lil’ Heathen” throws bombs back at him. “The Boston Finisher” strings together a few punches, and Stephens is having none of it as he comes right back at him. A loud leg kick from Stephens lands, and Kattar replies with a similar kick. Both men whiff with big hooks, and Stephens pursues the lead leg of the Boston-based fighter with kicks. They trade leg kicks, but Stephens’ appears to be more impactful as Kattar’s lead leg is beginning to welt up a little. Two powerful punches from Kattar give his opponent pause, but Stephens gathers himself and throws right back. Two over the top are followed by one powerful shot to the body from Kattar, and Stephens races after him with a leg kick that makes Kattar wince. Stephens chains together punches and leg kicks, and Kattar has been forced to change stances already. A big right from Kattar catches Stephens flush, and the Alliance MMA fighter shakes it out and tries blast him with a counter right. Both throw with all they have to end the round.

Round 2
Stephens opens up aggressively with a bevy of punches and a leg kick. The kick is forcing Kattar to lift his leg up in anticipation of getting kicked, and also making the Bostonian change stances. Stephens charges in to unload with some shots, but Kattar counters him on the way in and works the lead leg too. Stephens is now forced to switch stances from the damage, and they are swinging with malicious intent. Stephens stings him with a right that splits the guard, and continues the offense with another two thudding leg kicks. Kattar jabs to the body, and puts together a combination that wobbles Stephens. Kattar goes to the body and the head to keep Stephens guessing, and Stephens clinches up to land an elbow on the inside. They separate, and Stephens aims at that lead leg again. Kattar is committing to big right hands now, and they are getting Stephens’ attention.
Kattar winds up with a monster elbow that drills Stephens on the chin, and “Lil’ Heathen” goes down hard. Kattar chases after him to unleash some relentless ground-and-pound, and concludes with a few elbows that slice Stephens’ forehead wide open.
Herzog steps in to save a badly damaged Stephens, who is in a bad way and is positively gushing blood. This is a massive win for Kattar, and he does so with style points.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Yair Rodriguez

Round 1
We are now treated to a rematch of the main event from UFC Mexico City in September, which tragically ended due to an eye poke within 15 seconds. Rodriguez (12-2, 1 NC; 7-1, 1 NC UFC) is ready to run it back with Stephens (28-16, 1 NC; 16-15, 1 NC UFC), and tensions are high. Trying to keep a lid on this featherweight tilt is referee Kevin MacDonald. There is no touch of the gloves of any kind, as Rodriguez leaps through the air with a flying head kick that clanks off the dome of Stephens. Stephens wings back some angry punches, and the two trade for a moment with bad intentions. Rodriguez clinches up and pushes Stephens against the cage, and Stephens throws a knee to the body, so Rodriguez retaliates with one of his own. The crowd has started to chant "U.S.A." to root on their home country fighter, and as they break apart, Rodriguez lands a powerful elbows over the top. "El Pantera" throws a wild spinning wheel kick that is nowhere near the mark, but he regains position and throws several heavy kicks on both legs. A few body kicks are finding their home on Stephens' midsection, and they are adding up quick. Stephens fires back with everything he has in the form of right hands, but Rodriguez keeps his distance with effective kicks. Another body kick digs in for Rodriguez, and Stephens has lowered his right hand to defend this specific attack. Stephens ducks down possibly for a takedown, but after a little clinch fighting, the two separate. Rodriguez chooses to crash forward into the clinch again, landing a knee up the middle to get there. As Rodriguez slaps a low kick, Stephens rips a right hand to the body of his opponent. The Mexican pulls off a jumping switch kick that catches Stephens flush, but Stephens walks through it. As Stephens presses forward, Rodriguez drops him with a left jab, but cannot take advantage of his grounded adversary as Stephens returns to his feet. Two more kicks get off from Rodriguez, as Stephens chases him around and motions an obscene gesture to end the round.

Round 2
Rodriguez opens up round two with a spinning kick, but Stephens is able to get up his guard on time. The Mexican fighter then whips a head kick up top, but it is the body kick that follows that does serious damage and makes Stephens buckle over. As Stephens stumbles backwards, Rodriguez swarms him with punches, throwing everything he has into his punches. Stephens defends himself by pursuing a takedown, but Rodriguez is relentless with punches. "Lil' Heathen" is able to survive the assault by going after low takedowns, but Rodriguez walks over it and lands long punches. On his back, Stephens eats wild hammerfists but begins to throw punches while on his back. Rodriguez latches on a brabo choke, and Stephens is trying to roll out of it and survives the submission attempt but is still in grave danger. With pure willpower, Stephens stands back up and unleashes the hardest punches he can possibly throw on Rodriguez. Rodriguez dodges and weaves out of the way of most of these shots, and as Rodriguez catches Stephens to the body again with a kick, Stephens wraps Rodriguez and tries to take him down. Rodriguez rolls through to try to get out of the position but ends up on his back, with Stephens on top raining down punches. El Pantera throws up his legs to search for a triangle choke, and Stephens is not out of the woods yet. In more of a leg scissor choke than a triangle, Stephens breaks the posture and grinds his elbow on his opponent's face as Rodriguez is warned for grabbing the cage. Rodriguez gradually stands up, and Stephens punishes him with a salvo of punches. The Mexican eats several more shots as he finally gets to his feet, and whips a body kick out that backs away Stephens as this crazy round ends.

Round 3
Stephens comes out threatening with big shots, and as Rodriguez throws a kick out to back him off, he catches Stephens in the groin with a kick. Stephens calls the ref off so that he can charge at Rodriguez, and he slings looping shots that score on Rodriguez and get the crowd amped up. Rodriguez tries to keep his distance with leg kicks, and Stephens catches him on the end of a right hand that Rodriguez wears well. Suddenly, Stephens drops for a double leg takedown and gets Rodriguez down, and although Rodriguez gets back up, Stephens makes sure to score with several punches on his way up. The two separate, but not for long, as Stephens rushes in to secure another takedown and lands in Rodriguez' guard. Rodriguez attempts to utilize a rubber guard to get hold of Stephens' neck, but Stephens pushes the leg off and tries to get his ground-and-pound going. It is quite unfortunate that this fight is only three rounds instead of five, as Stephens sits on top in half guard while throwing punches from above. Stephens continues to mount offense on top in the form of numerous left hands, and the American then decides to drop down elbows that get heavier the more he throws. A huge left hand from Stephens scores as he stands up and dives down to land it, and after some more thudding strikes, the fight is now over. In a display of great sportsmanship, the two embrace, both thrilled with their performances.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Doo Ho Choi

Round 1
Referee Keith Peterson is the third man in the cage for tonight's 145-pound main event, scheduled for five rounds. Stephens whiffs on his opening leg kick and takes one in return from Choi, who backs up when the veteran threatens to charge forward. Stephens is swinging some heavy punches in the opening minute, but Choi is able to dodge or deflect most of them. The lightweights exchange low kicks before Choi grabs Stephens in the Thai clinch to deliver a knee. Stephens checks a leg kick but eats a straight right hand down the center. Choi rips into Stephens' lead leg with another chop; this time, "Lil Heathen" is waiting with a right-handed counter. Choi backs up Stephens to the fence, feints an uppercut but doesn't unleash the punch. Now it's Stephens driving forward, getting too aggressive and being spun against the fence. Stephens breaks free from the clinch with an elbow, but now it's Choi with a clean right uppercut-left hook. Thirty seconds left in round one as the fighters trade jabs, then Choi tacks on another heavy leg kick. Stephens answers with a loud kick to the body, then counters Choi's final kick with a straight right.

Stephens wakes up and tries to take off Choi's head with a knee, then lands a blistering right hand. Choi grimaces but stays right in the pocket, now seemingly measuring Stephens, waiting for a chance to counter and reclaim some ground. Stephens gives Choi some of his own medicine with a few hard leg kicks. Stephens counters Choi's low kick with another massive right hand that knocks the "Korean Superboy" backward a few steps. Choi goes to the body with a left, sucks in a deep breath and backs up as Stephens continues to march forward. Stephens jabs his way into range and then floors Choi with a massive right hand to the temple. Stephens comes crashing down on top of Choi with a heavy elbow, then stands and continues to pour on the punishment with punches. Referee Peterson is taking a close look; Choi is covering up, rolling onto his side, and the ref decides he's seen enough. Jeremy Stephens scores a minor upset with a hard-hitting second-round stoppage of Doo Ho Choi.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1
Stephens opens with an inside leg kick but has to back up as Melendez swings a counter right hand over the top. It's Stephens pressing out from the center of the cage, now clipping Melendez with a left hook as "El Nino" circles out to the middle. Stephens continues to put heavy kicks on Melendez's lead leg through the middle of the round, nearly chopping down Melendez at one point. Melendez scores his best punch so far with a right straight, but seconds later, the former Strikeforce champion falls backward due to another kick on his left leg. Melendez climbs back to his feet, but his leg does not look good, a huge knot on his shin from Stephens' brutal, unchecked kicks. Stephens goes to the body with a kick, sticks a jab, now lands another leg kick, sending Melendez back to the ground. Stephens stands over him with 20 seconds left, then comes down to Melendez's guard just as the round ends.

Round 2
Melendez closes the distance quickly, backing Stephens up against the fence and preventing "Lil Heathen" from throwing low kicks. Stephens backs him off and throws a shot to the left leg, and this time it's checked by Melendez. A right hand from Stephens splits the guard of Melendez, who has to check another leg kick right behind it. Despite the injured leg, Melendez is finding some success with his jab as he continually gets inside on the backpedaling Stephens. Halfway through the round, another low kick floors Melendez again. Stephens allows him to stand, gives him another shot to the leg, then has a right high kick blocked by "El Nino." Melendez works from the southpaw stance now, shielding his damaged leg but reducing his punching effectiveness. Stephens scores with an uppercut, then drops Melendez once again with a low kick. Stephens follows Melendez to the floor but can't produce a finish in the final 10 seconds of the round.

Round 3
Prior to the start of the final round, referee Jerin Valel tells Melendez that he needs to stay standing and defend himself. Melendez comes out aggressive, marching forward on Stephens, who scores with a body kick, an uppercut and a left hook to the jaw. Stephens has begun picking on Melendez's right leg now, chopping down the peg to which he has access as Melendez works from southpaw. Melendez eats a right hand, smiles and marches forward, straight into another right hand from Stephens. Another leg kick puts Melendez on the deck, but he rolls over and pops straight back to his feet before the referee can take any action. With 90 seconds left, Stephens remains firmly in control, tagging Melendez with jabs, kicks and knees, now mixing in some hooks to the body. Melendez takes an uppercut to the breadbasket as they enter the final minute of the bout. Stephens walks him down, backward toward the fence, and puts Melendez down with another shot to the left leg. Melendez gets up, falls again, and this time Stephens follows him down to the canvas for the last few seconds.

Frankie Edgar vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1
Stephens sprawls on Edgar’s first double-leg attempt and makes the former titleholder pay with a kick to the body as they separate. Edgar shoots again but can’t get deep enough to complete the takedown. Edgar moves around outside of Stephens’ punching range, testing the distance with speedy jabs while Stephens swings murderous hooks. Edgar catches a kick and puts a chop on Stephens’ planted leg, then runs the Iowan against the fence with a loose headlock. The New Jerseyan drops for a single-leg, defended well by Stephens, who widens his base against the wall. Edgar lifts and slaps Stephens, but the “Lil Heathen” springs back to his feet. The sequence repeats, Edgar staying glued to Stephens’ waist all the while. Stephens breaks up the clinch by threatening with a knee, then rakes a hand across Edgar’s face in the ensuing exchange. Referee Keith Peterson pauses the fight with one minute left in the round; Edgar says he doesn’t want the doctor, just for Stephens to keep his hands closed. The action resumes but the featherweights produce little in the way of meaningful offense down the stretch.

Round 2
Edgar throws a right hand to the body of Stephens, but the punch slips low and lands on Stephens’ cup. After a few seconds to recover, Stephens is back to work, walking forward on the local Tri-State favorite. Edgar changes levels to try another takedown, spins to a rear waistlock and dumps Stephens to the mat. Stephens posts and stands against the fence, then digs an underhook and breaks away. Edgar comes over the top with a straight right hand, then backpedals away as Stephens launches a right high kick. Suddenly, a switch kick from Stephens lands square on the jaw of Edgar, knocking him to the canvas. Edgar powers back to his feet and tries to slow the assault with a shot, but Stephens shoves him away and pushes forward with heavy punches. Stephens clips his wounded opponent with a left hook, then another; Edgar looked wobbly for a moment, but he seems to have regained his footing with 1:40 left in the round. Edgar is doing well to evade Stephens’ big punches down the stretch, and with one minute remaining, “The Answer” explodes into a powerful takedown. Edgar tries a mounted guillotine, but he can’t get underneath Stephens’ chin. Edgar is going for the choke again with 10 seconds left, hops back to mount, but Stephens won’t tap. Edgar releases the choke and postures up to drop a pair of elbows before the horn.

Round 3
Stephens chops at Edgar with a hard low kick, but Edgar catches the leg and converts it to a takedown just a few feet away from the fence. Edgar postures up and works some short ground-and-pound from half guard, but Stephens gets hold of his opponent’s left arm and works a kimura from the bottom. Edgar gets Stephens to release the arm after dropping a couple hard elbows on his face, and now it’s Edgar shifting to try and take the kneeling Stephens’ back. Edgar gets one hook but the cage is preventing his right leg from getting through. Stephens stands up for a split second, only to be hurled back to the ground, where he continues to defend his back from Edgar’s advances. Stephens stands again and finally separates from Edgar with just over two minutes on the clock. Stephens walks straight at Edgar, connects with an overhand right but can’t find a follow-up. Edgar grabs for a single-leg, gets denied by Stephens, who fends off another takedown try a few seconds later. Stephens is marching on Edgar, trying to close the distance and do some damage as the final minute ticks away. Edgar eats a right hook but seems unfazed, and he continues to fire punches back at Stephens down to the final horn.

Renan Barao vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1
Stephens attacks with leg kicks from the onset, pushing forward on the former bantamweight ace. Barao connects with a cracking right hand, catches a leg kick and then releases to tag Stephens with the right again. Barao brings the fight to the fence, pinning Stephens against the wall with an underhook. Stephens complains of a groin strike as Barao throws knees inside, but the 145ers separate shortly afterward. Stephens is headhunting now, marching after Barao and throwing big right hands over the top. Now it’s Stephens’ turn to dig an underhook and put Barao’s back to the cage. Barao lands an elbow, now a knee to the body while Stephens struggles to hold him in place. Stephens releases when Barao nearly hits a foot sweep; the “Lil Heathen” swings more huge punches but whiffs as Barao slides his head off center. Barao tries a takedown in the final 20 seconds but can’t wrestle Stephens to the ground before the horn.

Stephens connects with an uppercut, walks forward and stings Barao with another. Barao backs up to the fence, gets clipped with yet another uppercut and tries a clinch knee, but Stephens gets his head out of danger. Stephens is on the march now, walking down Barao to score with one more uppercut before the Nova Uniao product slows the assault with a clinch. Stephens reverses the position, putting Barao’s back against the cage, then drops for a single-leg at the halfway point of the round. Barao gets some space and wheels around with a spinning kick which bounces off Stephens’ raised right glove. Inside the last 90 seconds of the round, Stephens is still coming forward, eating a left hook to stun Barao with a straight right. Stephens misses with an uppercut but finds the mark with a whipping left behind it. A right hook partially lands for Stephens, sending Barao in for a shot. Round 3
Stephens slips a jab from Barao and digs into the Brazilian’s midsection with a harsh left hand. Barao wants the fight on the fence, but as soon as he gets it there, Stephens spins him around to take the outside position in the clinch. Barao, now sporting a cut on the left side of his forehead, slips out and circles back to the center. Barao sticks a jab but misses with the uppercut behind it; Stephens tags him back with an uppercut and gives Barao a wry smile. Both men are swinging for the fences but it’s Stephens landing the harder shots with greater frequency down the stretch. Barao dives for a takedown and manages to drag Stephens to the base of the fence just inside the two-minute mark. Stephens posts and stands, blocking Barao from taking his back on the way. Now it’s Stephens on the outside in the clinch, holding Barao on the cage with a left underhook. “Lil Heathen” briefly considers a single-leg but releases after referee Herb Dean threatens to break up the fighters for inactivity. Barao dives in on an ugly shot and gets popped with an uppercut. A straight right from Stephens cuts off a left hand from Barao, leaving the Brazilian swinging at air. Barao connects with a left hand as Stephens pushes forward in the closing seconds, but it’s Stephens who gets the last word in a wild final exchange.

Max Holloway vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1
Stephens switches stances in frotn of the southpaw Holloway, who forces the veteran to take a few steps backward with a double-pumped jab. There’s not a ton of action through the first 90 seconds, with Stephens giving Holloway a lot of different looks while cutting angles around the perimeter. Holloway sends a few long punches down the center before Stephens hits him with an outside leg kick. Holloway finally starts to close the gap with a left hook that backs up Stephens to the fence, but the Alliance MMA fighter catches Holloway’s next kick and hustles him against the fence about halfway through the round. Holloway loops his right arm over Stephens’ and controls his right wrist on the inside, preventing any dirty boxing. They split wth 90 seconds left in the round and Stephens ducks under a few punches from Holloway but eats a few more. Stephens clinches for the final 20 seconds and gets a knee to the body as he presses Holloway on the fence.

Round 2
Stephens charges in to land a hard right hook on the body of Holloway, who answers with a long, sweeping right hand. Leg kicks back up Stephens to the fence again; he tries to step out and tie up but gets denied by Holloway. The featherweights take turns moving forward and backward, showing lots of respect for one another’s strikes. Holloway connects with a nice counter right over the top, gets put back on the fence by a Stephens single-leg but uses good balance and more inside wrist control to stay on his feet. They separate at the halfway point of the round and the bout. Stephens swings a pair of big lefts over the top but gets picked off by Holloway’s shorter, quicker counters. Another takedown try from Stephens is stuffed, and Holloway winds up pressed against the cage again. Holloway breaks out of the clinch with a standing elbow, resets and counters the incoming Stephens with a blasting right hand on the side of the head. Stephens puts the fight back on the fence with an underhook but Holloway escapes quicker this time, and they finish the round on their feet in the middle of the cage.

Round 3
Stephens comes out with increased aggression, attacking Holloway’s legs with kicks and thumping the Hawaiian’s body with a hard uppercut. Holloway hits a takedown in the first minute of the round and pins down Stephens at the base of the fence, passing to side control on the veteran’s right side. Stephens rolls to one knee and Holloway jumps on his back, but he gets only one hook in before Stephens lies down on the mat again. The sequence repeats, Stephens giving up his back as he rolls to defend an arm-triangle choke setup. This time, Holloway gets both hooks set and goes hunting for the rear-naked choke with over half the round remaining. After getting a few heel strikes to the body, Stephens scrambles to his feet and shakes Holloway off his back in the process. Stephens stalks forward on Holloway, now inside the final two minutes. He tags “Blessed” with a body shot, a right hand and then shoots for another takedown. Holloway turns him away, eats a left hook on the break and gives Stephens a nod to acknowledge the strike. Stephens is swinging for the fences now, knowing he needs a knockout to win, but Holloway avoids the haymakers and throws big overhand strikes in return down to the final horn.

Dennis Bermudez vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1
Bermudez shoots straight for a takedown and winds up shoving Stephens against the fence. Stephens quickly separates and gets down to throwing punches, and a right hand seems to sting Bermudez. At the same time, a clash of heads cuts Stephens near the right eye. Bermudez drops to his knees, can’t get the takedown and stands to up to crack Stephens with a right hook. Bermudez pins “Lil Heathen” against the fence with an underhook. Two minutes into the round, Bermudez finally drags Stephens to the mat and then tries to sneak around to take the back. Bermudez is blocked by the fence, so he stays on Stephens’ back with one hook in, dropping left hands. The cut on Stephens’ right eyebrow is leaking again, pooling blood on the floor underneath the fighters. When Stephens rolls to his knees, Bermudez tries to jump on his back, but he goes too high and Stephens is able to slip out the back door. The featherweights are back on their feet with 90 seconds remaining, and Bermudez draws Stephens forward to land a stiff left hand. Stephens answers with a left-handed haymaker, but Bermudez eats it and then waits a few seconds before diving for a takedown. Stephens stuffs the shot, and again they wind up clinching on the fence. Stephens tries to whip around with a spinning elbow, but Bermudez goes underneath it and holds his man on the fence until the round’s end.

Bermudez gets back to his feet and continues walking forward on Stephens, who chops out the wrestler’s lead leg with a hard kick. A clubbing left hook from Stephens knocks Bermudez back to the mat; Bermudez stands and returns the favor with a push kick to the body which puts Stephens on his seat. Halfway through the round, Bermudez muscles Stephens against the cage. Stephens breaks out to deliver a right hand and a clinch knee, but Bermudez circles off the fence and comes back with a Superman punch which catches Stephens off balance and puts him back on the mat. Stephens scrambles up, gets a kick in the gut and has to defend as Bermudez shoots for a double-leg takedown against the fence. Referee Marc Goddard calls for work as the pace slows for the first time in the hectic, back-and-forth fight. The featherweights split with 40 seconds remaining, and Bermudez finds the mark with another Superman punch. Jeremy Stephens vs. Charles Oliveira

Round 1
Oliveira closes the distance behind an overhand right and tries to drag the fight to the mat. He can't get a takedown, so he just pulls guard along the fence and swings his hips for an armbar. He's got Stephens' arm, but he's can't turn his elbow the right way, so “Lil' Heathen” picks him up and powerbombs him to try to break out of the armbar. Stephens buys himself a little space, but Oliveira still has a hold of his arm and is punching and elbowing his face. Stephens stacks Oliveira and is trying to slip his elbow out, but Oliveira is torquing just enough of the arm to keep him stuck. Stephens is feeling the pain and shrinks to his knees a bit, but manages to finally extricate himself after two-and-a-half minutes defending an armbar. Stephens tries to pound away, but “do Bronx” elbows from guard and threatens with his legs, so Stephens opts to stand up with 90 seconds to go. The Brazilian chases Stephens down to the fence, landing a clean inside elbow, but Stephens circles off the cage. Stephens starting to load up on a wild right hands, so Oliveira responds a spinning back fist, which is mostly blocked. Right hook-left head kick from Oliveira is absorbed on the arms of Stephens at the round's end.

Round 2
Oliveira unloads a flying switch-step head kick which Stephens blocks, then goes downstairs with a hard low kick which the American is forced to absorb. Oliveira runs him into the cage, jockeying for a takedown, allowing Stephens to elbow him to the head. However, Stephens gets too enamoured with the elbows and Oliveira sucks him off the cage, gets on top and quickly gets to back control. Oliveira locks in the body triangle and the physical toll of “do Bronx's” grappling is clear on Stephens' face. The Brazilian suddenly throws his right leg over Stephens' face and transitions to an armbar. “Lil' Heathen” keeps his hands clasped tight for a a minute and when Oliveira breaks his grip, he grits out the armbar, turns his hips and comes out over the top. Great toughness and defense from Jeremy Stephens. Two minutes left in the round and Oliveira, who came in overweight, has yet to slow down. He runs Stephens right back to the cage, gets a front headlock and gets busy with knees. Stephens starts putting his hand on the ground, so Oliveira jumps a figure-four guillotine and uses it to sweep to top position. Stephens tries to snake up the fence and Oliveira takes his back once again, then steps over his face for yet another armbar. Stephens stacks him quickly and gets out of real danger, popping his elbow out and punching away until the horn.

Oliveira trots at Stephens and eats a hard right that forces him to the butt scoot. Stephens kicks his legs but lets his man retake his feet. Oliveira runs Stephens backwards again, where Stephens surprises him with a kimura attempt. The Brazilian escapes it and takes top position for just a moment along the cage, before Stephens slides back up and retakes his feet. “Do Bronx” keeps the pace up, glancing with a spinning hook kick upstairs, then shooting in. Stephens defends and lands a right hand on the exit. Oliveira shoots again, tries to roll into guard, but Stephens shrugs him off again and makes him stand. Oliveira is relentless, getting in on another double-leg takedown, pinching Stephens' knees and dumping him against the fence. The Brazilian gets past Stephens' guard and tries to lock up a brabo choke with a deep overhook, but Stephens powers out and forces Oliveira to his back. Oliveira tries to bait him to the ground, so Stephens smacks him with a heavy right hand, then soccer kicks is ribs before telling referee Herb Dean to make Oliveira stand. Oliveira continues to press forward with long right hands and kicks and he's landing. Stephens swings and cracks him with a two-punch combo, so “do Bronx” clinches and pulls guard with under a minute to go in the fight. Stephens elbows away from full guard while Oliveira tries to trap his opponent's arms. Stephens punches his way through it, stands and then dives back into guard with another crushing right. Oliveira rolls and Stephens tries to take the back as time expires.

Cub Swanson vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round 1
Referee Herb Dean is the third man in the cage for tonight’s featherweight main event. Swanson strikes first with an outside leg kick, then has to back straight out to avoid Stephens’ counter. A front kick and an inside leg kick keep Stephens at bay as the “Lil Heathen” pushes forward. Swanson is doing good work with his kicks, keeping Stephens outside until two minutes in, when he lands a grazing right hand. Swanson absorbs a body shot and then plants his hand to throw a flashy cartwheel kick that comes up short. Swanson snipes down the middle in an exchange to land a quick jab. The 145ers trade leg kicks in between punching combinations from Swanson. Stephens is looking for a big right hand but is pulling up short. Just after Swanson scores with a straight punch, Stephens catches a kick and blasts down the middle with a straight right that puts Swanson on the mat. Stephens chases him to the floor and finishes the round in Swanson’s open guard.

Swanson whiffs on a big uppercut, then gets countered on a left hook as Stephens ducks under to deliver a left of his own. Swanson backs Stephens up toward the fence; Stephens circles out and eats a whipping right hand. A liver kick seems to hurt Stephens, who backpedals and covers his right side as Swanson storms with punches and another body kick. Swanson catches Stephens leaning and blasts him with an uppercut, then a right hook. Stephens seems to have recovered, and Swanson takes his foot off the gas midway through the round. With two minutes left, Stephens shoots in and holds Swanson against the cage as he works for a double-leg. Swanson stays there for 30 seconds, defending with his back to the cage, before delivering some elbows to the side of Stephens’ head. They break with 50 seconds left and Swanson tries to walk down Stephens, who swipes him out of range with a missed hook. They trade jabs, and Stephens goes for the takedown one last time to finish the frame.

Stephens eats a right cross as he backs up, now spraying blood from his nose. Swanson connects with a left hook and an overhand right, and he uses good head movement to dodge Stephens’ haymaker counter. Stephens lands a right hook and eats a left from Swanson to score with another. Both men are throwing hands as the final 40 seconds tick down, including a clubbing overhand right from Stephens. The featherweights reset and Elkins comes forward throwing hands, leaving his body open to a left hand from the ducking Stephens. A hard leg kick chops down Elkins, who shoots and is denied again. Elkins lands a kick but pays for it immediately as Stephens connects with a huge uppercut. Another takedown attempt fails for Elkins, who backpedals and connects with a kick to the body. Stephens tags the incoming Elkins with another big uppercut, and now it’s Stephens coming forward in the closing seconds, finishing the round with a left hook that knocks Elkins to the mat.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Estevan Payan
Round 1
Payan comes out flicking a jab and lands a couple strong leg kicks outside. It’s Stephens coming forward, though, now throwing some hard low kicks of his own. One lands on Payan’s cup and referee Chris Tognoni pauses the action momentarily. Payan recovers and denies a takedown attempt from Stephens against the fence when they resume. They move to the center of the cage as Stephens continues to punish Payan’s lead leg. An overhand right from Payan appears to stagger Stephens, but the “Lil’ Heathen” shakes it off to shoot again. Payan tries a guillotine as they fall to the ground, but Stephens pops his head loose to set up in the Arizona Combat Sport fighter’s guard. Payan lands a couple solid shots from his back, then eats an elbow from Stephens. Upkick lands for Payan and he scrambles to his feet, bleeding from his forehead after the Stephens elbow. Stephens keeps Payan on the fence, where “El Terrible” looks for another guillotine. Stephens avoids it and completes the double-leg with 90 seconds left in the round, then cracks Payan with a knee as he stands back up. Stephens lands a kick inside, takes a right-handed counter in return. More hard inside leg kicks land for Stephens, then a big right straight staggers Payan with 45 seconds left. Stephens finishes the round strong with a leg kick, another big right hand and a slapping kick to the body.

Round 2
Stephens goes straight back to the right hand and lands it on a leaning Payan less than 15 seconds into the round. Payan is on his back foot, still bleeding from the cut opened in the first round, but trying to retaliate with leg kicks and punches; most of the punches miss, but a couple leg kicks connect. Stephens hits a takedown on the fence and Payan quickly works back up. Stephens keeps the action on the fence until he’s able to land another takedown. Once on the floor, Stephens works Payan’s face with more elbows from guard, bloodying him further. Stephens gets mount with two minutes left and Payan gives up his back. Stephens tries a neck crank, can’t get the tap and gives it up. Payan is just gushing blood all over the canvas as he kneels with Stephens on his back and fends off a rear-naked choke attempt. There is a sizeable pool of blood on the ground when Payan gets up at the end of the round.

Round 3
Payan looks to be the aggressor in the early going of the final round, but Stephens lands the first big offense with a thudding high kick to the side of Payan’s face. Stephens snaps off some quick punches, dodges a few slow ones from Payan, and then hits another takedown. Right hands from Stephens now, as he traps a kneeling Payan against the fence. Payan gets to his feet, his face covered in blood, and defends a double-leg attempt by grabbing the fence, for which he’s warned by ref Tognoni. Payan turns it around and now puts Stephens’ back to the cage, but Stephens soon explodes out and plows Payan to the mat in the middle of the cage. Payan continues to cover the canvas in blood as Stephens drops elbows from side-control to the final horn.

Yves Edwards vs. Jeremy Stephens
Round 1
Steve Newport is the ref for this lightweight bout. Stephens opens up with a flying knee which is dodged by Edwards. Single-leg attempt from Edwards is fended off by Stephens with a leaping knee. Stephens is swinging for the fences early and appears to sting Edwards with an uppercut. Still pressing forward, Stephens misses with another jumping knee. As Stephens comes forward to bomb with another combination, Edwards catches him with a perfect right-handed counter that sends Stephens crashing to the canvas. Edwards smells blood and pounces, battering Stephens from side control and knocking him out cold with a nasty elbow strike. Ref Newport steps in and a dazed Stephens comes to moments later, wondering why the fight was stopped.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Donald Cerrone
Round 1
Cerrone flicks out some outside leg kicks with his hands held low; Stephens tries to come over the top with a big right hand, but he’s having a hard time closing the distance in the early going. Cerrone mixes up the kicks, now going to the body, and Stephens tries some leg kicks out as well. Cerrone goes low for a single-leg, can’t grab it and quickly gives it up. He wraps up the head of Stephens for a quick knee, steps off and throws another low kick. Cerrone lands a one-two-kick, then a kick-one-two, and Stephens is blinking his now-bloodied left eye after the exchange. No call from ref Mario Yamasaki and the fight goes on. Stephens slips on a high kick and Cerrone lets him back up. Now it’s Cerrone missing with a leaping knee, but Stephens can’t grab on. Cerrone keeps the combinations coming in the last 30 seconds, walking down Stephens and chopping away at the veteran’s lead leg.
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Cerrone
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Cerrone
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Cerrone
Round 2
Stephens is having the same trouble in the first part of the second as he did throughout the first: Cerrone is just too long, and the “Cowboy” is using a variety of rangy kicks, punches and elbows to damage and frustrate his opponent. An uppercut backs Stephens off and Cerrone smells blood. The Greg Jackson student comes forward and Stephens shoots a long shot which is stuffed. Right hook to the body from Cerrone and he sidesteps a power combo. Cerrone pins Stephens against the fence and picks his shots with hooks and uppercuts. Stephens shoots again and is turned away. A good right hand to the body lands for Stephens but Cerrone walks right through it and keeps kicking away at Stephens’ lead leg. Cerrone ducks in for a waistlock and sweeps the leg to put Stephens on his back for the last 20 seconds of the round.
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Cerrone
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Cerrone
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Cerrone
Round 3
Cerrone goes inside with a thigh kick and thuds one to Stephens’ cup. The “Li’l Heathen” takes a minute to compose himself and the lightweights get back to work. Stephens lands an outside thigh kick but Cerrone gives him one back twice as hard. Cerrone tries a takedown that doesn’t go, but a moment later he puts Stephens on the ground with a hard outside leg kick. He lets Stephens back to the feet, where Stephens starts swinging wildly and missing by a good distance. Cerrone continues bouncing out of range and wearing down the legs, as well as further swelling Stephens’ badly damaged left eye. Two minutes to go now and this looks like a lost cause for Stephens, who can’t get past Cerrone’s jab and can’t hang onto the Cowboy when he does get hold of him. Cerrone keeps the strikes coming, egging Stephens on to the final horn.
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Cerrone (30-27 Cerrone)
