Mingyang Zhang vs. Anthony Smith
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Zhang (-500), Smith (+380)

Round 1
The purported last dance for storied veteran Smith (38-21, 13-11 UFC) has arrived, as he plans on calling it quits at the conclusion of his 60th pro outing, win or lose. Getting the honor of facing Smith on the way out, Zhang (18-6, 2-0 UFC) is a massive betting favorite having won his last 11 bouts by first-round stoppage. If that is soon to become 12, or if Smith can pull one more rabbit out of the hat, referee Jason Herzog will be the first to know. The emotional Smith does not touch gloves before getting down to it, and everyone in the building sharply inhales ahead of what’s about to come. Zhang attempts to strike first, with a high kick that is blocked and a low kick that is not. Zhang kicks the lead leg two more times, and a third flusters Smith and forces him to engage. Smith wings punches that do not land cleanly, and Zhang kicks his front leg again. The low kicks have already done some damage, as he is preemptively lifting his leg up to defend against them. Zhang has a few punches pound into the guard, and Smith ties him up. Zhang scores short knees on the inside, and Smith leans his weight on his opponent and frames off for an elbow that never comes. Zhang escapes, and Smith follows him and walks through low kicks and elbows. Zhang wraps a stern right hand around the guard, and his leg kicks continue scoring. Smith gets off an elbow through the guard, and he is quickly answered by a low kick. Smith jams another elbow on the dome, and Zhang gives him one back and slashes open a cut on the top of his head. Blood flows fast down his head, and he shakes his head to get it out of his eyes. Smith wipes his eyes out as Zhang keeps striking, and the nasty elbows from Zhang find their home on his cheek again and again. Smith says enough is enough when it comes to those strikes, and he shoots in for a naked takedown from afar. Zhang lands a strike to the back of the head, and Smith pulls guard to drag him into the grappling world. Smith sits up, and Herzog tells Zhang he is down and not to kick or knee him in the head. Smith takes some shots, and he sits up and gets bowled over with punches and elbows that continue battering him.
Herzog tells Smith to move, eventually raising his voice to scream that he needs to do something. Giving Smith way more time than most would be, Herzog allows Zhang to beat Smith down and spray blood all over the mat. Smith shells up on his side, the damage suddenly a bit too much for him. Smith falls to his back, and Zhang clobbers him until Herzog has seen enough
. Smith sits up and calls for a bucket, and he stands up and gives a middle finger to someone in the audience. “Lionheart” marches to the cage wall and shouts down someone in the crowd, and everyone looks around confusedly while Zhang tries to calm his opponent down. Smith shakes out of it, and he raises Zhang’s arm in the air to congratulate him for crushing his final moment to shine. MMA is a cruel sport at times, but as Smith fades away, it is possible—however unlikely—that China has a new star on its hands in the form of “Mountain Tiger” and his 100% finish rate. Zhang is now a ranked fighter, while Smith takes his gloves off to complete his retirement ceremony. Whether this is his final fight or not, the choice remains in the hands of the 36-year-old former title challenger.

Angelo Bodetti Expert Confident picked Apr 20, 2025 (6 days before fight)
Zhang Mingyang

Angelo picks Zhang Mingyang, believing his power and grappling will be too much for an aging Anthony Smith. He notes that Mingyang is a grappler at core with great takedowns, and that Smith's grappling is not a threat. He is slightly nervous because Mingyang is untested, but he has him in a parlay.

Zhang Mingyang

Big Brady picks Zhang Mingyang, citing Anthony Smith's decline and poor reaction to punches. He expects Zhang's power to land a big shot and finish Smith early. He notes Smith has been counted out before but still favors Zhang by first-round knockout.

Connor Ruebusch Expert Confident picked Apr 24, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Zhang Mingyang

Connor picks Zhang because he believes Anthony Smith is a head case who has been declining and reverting to his old, losing ways. Smith's recent fights show him getting discouraged easily and running out of ideas. Zhang is a durable brawler who can soak up damage and extend exchanges, and Smith's current mental state makes him vulnerable to Zhang's pressure and power.

"I'm not picking him either. I just think, you know, he could totally win it."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Lean picked Apr 25, 2025 (1 day before fight)
Zhang Mingyang

The host leans Mingyang with low confidence, noting that if Mingyang doesn't get a first-round KO, Smith could take over late or get a submission. He expects Mingyang to find a shot, put Smith on wobbly legs, and finish with ground and pound in the first round.

first round KO
"I am going to lean with Jen with very low confidence as I think he ends up finding that shot to put Smith on wobbly legs and follow up with some ground and pound to get him out of there …"

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Apr 22, 2025 (4 days before fight)
Zhang Mingyang

The MMA Guru picks Zhang Mingyang to win by TKO in the first round. He is very high on Mingyang, calling him a real deal prospect with knockout power and sharp technique. He criticizes Anthony Smith's predictable style, emotional state (crying on walkout), and lack of a serious mindset. He believes Mingyang will overwhelm Smith early.

TKO round 1
"I think Jang Minyang is going to TKO him in the first round. And this is Smith's retirement fight. I'm not considering he's going to train harder for this than he has for any other fight in his career."
ZA
Zane Simon Expert Confident picked Apr 24, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Zhang Mingyang

Zane picks Zhang, noting that even the worst version of Anthony Smith has the tools to beat Zhang, but Smith's emotional struggles and tendency to shut down make him unreliable. Zhang is fearless, powerful, and will fight without hesitation, which is a bad matchup for the current version of Smith. Zane also mentions that Smith's recent performances show him getting discouraged and losing focus.

"I'm not gonna pick him in the middle of all the struggles and just assume that the incredibly obvious, horrible emotional burden that he was, has carried with him into the cage before is gone."

Angelo Bodetti Expert Lean picked Nov 30, 2024 (7 days before fight)
Anthony Smith

Angelo picks Anthony Smith, arguing that Smith has been more active and fought tougher competition recently, while Reyes has been knocked out repeatedly. He believes Smith is more durable and technically sound. However, he emphasizes this is a low-confidence pick and not a betting recommendation. He notes both fighters are not durable, but Smith may be more so.

Cody Saftic Expert Confident picked Dec 4, 2024 (3 days before fight)
Dominick Reyes

Cody picks Reyes, believing he still has something left after his win over Jacoby. He notes Smith's tendency to fade after the first round and thinks Reyes' speed and accuracy will lead to a late TKO or decision. He acknowledges chin concerns but favors Reyes.

"I'll take Reyes... likely third round TKO."
CO
Connor Ruebusch Expert Hesitant picked Dec 6, 2024 (1 day before fight)
Anthony Smith

Connor picks Anthony Smith because he believes Reyes has not addressed the technical and confidence issues that caused his losing streak. He notes that Reyes' win over Dustin Jacoby was a 50/50 brawl where he landed first, and that Reyes has not shown any new tools or adjustments. Connor argues that Smith, despite his own confidence problems, is a tough veteran who will not fold easily and can capitalize on Reyes' mistakes. He also points out that Smith has never looked completely lost in a fight, unlike Reyes during his skid.

Connor mentions the odds are getting wider, with Smith at +248 to +273, and says he doesn't like those odds because Reyes' losses were bad.
"I'm gonna pick anthony smith a guy go for it. Yeah make i'll pick reas but I do not trust dominic reas."

Daniel Vreeland Expert Confident picked Dec 3, 2024 (4 days before fight)
Dominick Reyes

Daniel believes Reyes is the better fighter and will dictate the fight. He notes Smith's decline and slow speed, while Reyes regained confidence with a knockout win. He warns about Reyes' chin but expects him to avoid getting caught.

"I simply think that Reyes is a better fighter than Anthony Smith."

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Dec 6, 2024 (1 day before fight)
Dominick Reyes

Reyes got back to winning ways by knocking out Dustin Jacoby due to Jacoby's over-aggressiveness. Smith likely won't be as aggressive, so Reyes will touch him up from distance over 15 minutes and win on the scorecards.

"I think that would lead to Reyes touching up Smith from distance throughout the course of 15 minutes and getting his hand raised on the scorecards"

Paul Shaughnessy Expert Hesitant picked Dec 4, 2024 (3 days before fight)
Dominick Reyes

Paul leans toward Reyes but is hesitant due to his knockout losses. He notes Smith's durability and early-round power, but thinks Reyes' speed and youth give him the edge. He considers the line too high and passes on betting.

"I can't touch Dominic Reyes... it's dog or pass for me, leaning pass."

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Dec 3, 2024 (4 days before fight)
Dominick Reyes

The MMA Guru picks Reyes, calling Anthony Smith terrible and lacking talent. He believes Reyes has the game plan ability (having beaten Jon Jones) and will drill low kicks. He thinks Smith cannot take Reyes down or knock him out, and predicts a vintage performance with a TKO in round one or two against the cage via ground and pound.

Reyes wins by TKO in round 1 or 2
"I'm going Dominic Reyes I think Anthony Smith is terrible"
ZA
Zane Simon Expert Hesitant picked Dec 6, 2024 (1 day before fight)
Dominick Reyes

Zane picks Reyes but with low confidence, stating that if Reyes is confident, he should beat Smith easily. He notes that Reyes has the physical tools and style to pressure Smith and take him down, but he is concerned that Reyes has not made any technical improvements during his losing streak. Zane also points out that Smith is a tough out who can survive early adversity and come back, and that Reyes' confidence is fragile. He ultimately leans Reyes because he believes Reyes has more future potential, but he is not confident in the pick.

Zane comments on the odds, noting Reyes opened at -345 and is now -329, and says that a shocking knockout win over Jacoby does not make Reyes back.
"I think ray's is gonna hurt him and pick up a round and feel pretty good about himself... I would like to see ray as win."

Roman Dolidze

Cody picks Dolidze despite concerns about his inconsistency. He notes that Dolidze looked good against Marvin Vettori but terrible against Nassourdine Imavov, possibly due to the lack of crowd energy in the Apex. Cody believes Dolidze will benefit from the live crowd at UFC 303 and that his durability and pressure will be key. He also points out that Dolidze has fought at light heavyweight before and that Smith tends to fade in later rounds if he doesn't get an early finish.

"I'm gonna go with Roman Dolidze... I think he can win the 20 pounds."

Daniel has no strong read on this fight, noting both fighters are opportunistic finishers with similar qualities. He sees Dolidze potentially getting takedowns and grinding, but ultimately goes with the underdog Smith because he doesn't know enough and prefers the dog. He acknowledges it could realistically go either way.

Roman Dolidze

Daniel Vreeland picks Roman Dolidze, stating that Anthony Smith has no chin left and Dolidze has knockout power, as evidenced by his KO of Jack Hermansson. He believes Dolidze will stuff any takedown attempts from Smith and knock him out on the feet. Vreeland also praises Dolidze's underrated jiu-jitsu and sweeps, noting he won't fall into a dumb submission. He acknowledges the concern of Dolidze moving up in weight on short notice but still favors him.

He mentions that Smith has screwed them over numerous times but still cannot pick him. Fox also points out that Dolidze is taking the fight on short notice but still expects him to win.

"It's me obviously I'm not picking Anthony Smith... he has no Chin left... I can very easily see him knocking Anthony Smith out."

The host thinks Dolidze's aggressiveness could cause Smith issues, and that Smith does not have the technical striking to pick Dolidze apart like Imavov did. He predicts Dolidze will break Smith and get a finish in the second or third round. However, he is not confident due to Dolidze's lack of technical prowess and the short notice weight class change, so he says this fight is likely a pass.

Dolidze wins in round 2 or 3

Paul also mentions that Smith has a history of upsetting prospects and that Dolidze's last performance was concerning. However, he admits it's a close fight and that Smith's path to victory likely involves an early finish.

He notes Petrino's composed striking and low kicks, and expects him to exploit Smith's weaknesses, possibly finishing him.

Anthony Smith

Cody likes Anthony Smith as a plus 190 underdog. He notes that Smith is taking the fight on short notice but is likely in shape due to his commentary work in Vegas. Cody highlights Smith's durability, cardio, and experience against top competition. He believes Smith can survive Rountree's early onslaught and take the fight to the ground, where he has a massive grappling advantage. Cody also mentions the small Apex cage helps Smith cut off the cage and get takedowns. He acknowledges Rountree's power but thinks Smith can outwork him in later rounds.

Lucrative James calls this a 'weird ass fight' and refuses to break it down in detail. He sees Khalil potentially teeing off with leg kicks and body shots, but also notes Khalil's mental inconsistency and cardio issues. He thinks Anthony Smith could out-veteran him in later rounds with takedowns, but Smith doesn't shoot takedowns much anymore. He says it's a massive stay-away and if anything, he'd play Smith as a plus-money underdog due to volatility. He makes no pick.

Levi notes that Smith is a veteran with many finishes but does not see Smith dominating the fight; instead, he expects Walker to be ahead on the scorecards or land a knockout. He acknowledges the risk due to Walker's history of being knocked out and his tall man defense, but ultimately favors Walker's athleticism and recent focus.

Andrew Sanchez vs. Bruno Silva

Round 1
In this middleweight preliminary headliner, “El Dirte” Sanchez (12-6, 5-4 UFC) will try to make it dirty against brutal Brazilian knockout artist Silva (20-6, 1-0 UFC). Many do not expect this fight will last long, and referee Keith Peterson will try to redeem himself from a few earlier missed infractions by tamping down the nonsense in the Apex. The gloves get touched, and Silva begins to stalk the American down right out of the gate. Sanchez turns the tables thanks to herky-jerky movement, bobbing his head down and faking to strike, but Silva quickly walks through this and unloads a brutal combination of punches to the body and head. A few body shots lead to an uppercut that snaps Sanchez’ head back, and Sanchez’ face is already marked up. Sanchez circles away to regain his composure, and Silva slings a body kick that lands with an audible pop. A big overhand right from Silva misses, allowing Sanchez to shoot in low for a single. Silva defends himself by linking his fingers illegally into the fence, but Sanchez rips his legs out and puts him on his back. Silva looks to his corner as Sanchez holds him pinned with his seat on the floor and back to the cage, before “El Dirte” makes it dirty by dragging Silva’s back to the mat. Sanchez in half guard tries to get some ground-and-pound off, and Silva scoots his back up to the fence so he can hope to wall-walk. Sanchez triangles his foe’s legs out beneath him with a move some call the “Dagestani handcuff” even though it existed long before Khabib Nurmagomedov competed inside the Octagon, and Silva appears frustrated as he starts talking to his corner. His corner gives him advice he apparently does not like, as he shakes his head, all while Sanchez puts him flat on the ground again so he can start unloading with ground-and-pound. Silva fights back with swinging elbows from his back, and he kicks off the chest to push Sanchez back. This momentary break allows Silva to burst back to his feet, and Sanchez runs ahead to stick to Silva like glue. Sanchez trips out the leg briefly, but “Blindado” is able to power back up although he cannot break the grip. A knee from Sanchez pounds into Silva’s cup with 20 seconds left in the ground, and Silva is none too pleased. Silva recovers after 35 seconds, and he runs out when they resume to throw a high kick. Sanchez counters him with a side kick that smashes Silva into the cup again, and Silva is hurt badly as he falls to the ground yelling and slamming his hand on the mat. Miraculously, he only needs 30 more seconds to get his bearings after that display of pain, and when the action resumes, he sprints with a right hand but the round ends before he can reach the target.

Round 2
Sanchez begins the round with a few reaching punches, and his jittery movement gives Silva pause from loading up on anything. When the Brazilian does this, swinging wildly and missing, Sanchez grabs hold of him and slams him down to the mat. Silva manages to work his way up, and “El Dirte” kicks out Silva’s foot repeatedly to return him to the ground. Sanchez hits a single, and Silva catches him with a right hand but still lands on the mat. The Brazilian springs into action, unloading with a furious barrage of elbows from his back that may have hurt Sanchez. “El Dirte” gathers his thoughts as Silva returns to his feet, and Silva grabs the fence to stop a subsequent takedown try. The fence grab is unsuccessful, as Sanchez twirls him around and puts him down again. Silva gets back up only to have his feet sucked out beneath him and returned to the mat. In half guard, Sanchez sits up to saw his elbow back and forth on the chin of his opponent. Silva squirms his way with his back to the wall, and he signals to Peterson to do something, but Sanchez is still working and advancing position. Through sheer force of will, Silva pops back up, and he is only upright for two seconds before Sanchez drops him right back down on his head. Once more, “Blindado” fights his way back up, and he tries to throw a big punch only to get bowled over. The American lands a single strike to force Silva to turn to his knees, but Silva once again able to stand. Sanchez unloads with a few punches before the round ends.

Round 3
The gloves get touched to begin the last round, and Silva throws caution to the wind as he walks the American down to try to unload on him. Silva lands to the head and body, and a fatiguing Sanchez with his back to the fence defends by using a front kick that collides with the cup. The third groin strike draws a point deduction for Sanchez, and Silva needs to catch his breath with another 30-second break. Silva is energized by this, and he blitzes his opponent with punches. Silva rips the body and goes to the head, and he has a knee crash straight into Sanchez’ chin. Silva continues to slam his fists into his gassing foe’s midsection, and he just misses with a big uppercut. Sanchez cannot deliver much in the way of offense on his own side, as Silva ignores the strikes and wrecks Sanchez’ body. A liver kick leads to a few punches, and Sanchez bounces off the wall from the blows but is still in the fight. Silva’s offense suddenly falls off a cliff as he might have used everything he had to stop the fight, and Sanchez clips him with a left hand. Sanchez backs Silva off with a few punches, but a switch suddenly flips in the head of the Brazilian, who charges. “El Dirte” defends himself and backs away into the fence, which allows Silva to stalk him down and blast him with vicious punches to the head and body.
The body shots open up ones to the head, and Silva strings a 10-piece combination together as Sanchez bends over, barely on his feet and taking huge damage. This lengthy barrage of unanswered blows is enough for Peterson to call a stop to the fight, awarding Silva the huge comeback win after likely losing both of the first two rounds.
After his victory, Silva is awarded his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and he celebrates with his team.

Bruno Silva

Angelo is very confident in Bruno Silva, citing his insane power on the feet and ground, and his ability to finish. He notes Sanchez has a suspect chin and is well-rounded but not great at anything. Silva's takedown defense and grappling are good enough to survive. Angelo likes the moneyline at -135 and plans to bet it. He also likes Silva in DraftKings at 8300 and the less less on monkey knife fight.

Daniel is high on Bruno Silva, a former M-1 champion with devastating power. He notes Silva has addressed past grappling issues by reversing position and knocking out a black belt from his guard. Sanchez is a superior wrestler with good boxing and distance control. Silva has poor takedown defense and relies on KO power, but Sanchez can grind him out for 15 minutes. Sanchez by decision is the most likely outcome, though Silva's power is a threat.

Daniel Levi picks Makhmud Muradov, praising his boxing, footwork, and takedown defense. He notes Muradov's 13-fight win streak and ability to find openings, especially to the body. Levi respects Sanchez's improvements but believes Muradov's striking difference is too big, predicting a knockout or decision win.

Makhmud Muradov

Muradov is more technical on the feet, has good counter striking, and has solid takedown defense with underhooks. Sanchez showed improved striking in his last fight, but that was only one fight and against a lower-level opponent. Sanchez has cardio issues and may gas if he can't get an early finish. Muradov is experienced and should be able to pick Sanchez apart over 15 minutes. I like Muradov at -135, as the market may be skewed by Sanchez's flashy win.

Makhmud Muradov

The MMA Guru picks Makhmud Muradov to win by unanimous decision, citing his reach, size, youth, and volume striking. He notes that Andrew Sanchez struggles against higher-level strikers and has been KO'd before. He expects Muradov to outland Sanchez for three rounds, similar to how Marvin Vettori overwhelmed Sanchez with volume. He does not see a finish but thinks Muradov will control the fight on the feet.

Wellington Turman

Daniel Levi leans with Wellington Turman, but acknowledges it could go either way. He notes that Turman is young, hungry, and has shown improvement, while Sanchez has questions about his chin and cardio. Sanchez's wrestling should be able to take Turman down and control him, as Turman's takedown defense is not as strong as Marvin Vettori's. Sanchez showed improved cardio in his last fight, but his past cardio issues are a concern.
