The Official Result
Shauna Bannon def. Puja Tomar via Submission (Armbar) R2 3:22
Angelo picks Shauna Bannon despite thinking Puja Tomar is the better fighter. He believes Shauna's size, strength, and forward pressure will allow her to get Puja against the cage and exploit grappling holes. He also factors in crowd support since Ireland is close to England. He expects a close decision and notes the fight is low-level but potentially fun.
Brady calls this a coin flip and expects a split decision. He favors Puja Tomar as the plus-money underdog because she is active with kicks and judges like activity. He criticizes Shauna Bannon for hitting air and thinks the fight is very low quality.
The host views this as a low-level matchup with neither woman threatening finishes, but Bannon's jiu-jitsu could cause issues for Tomar. Even in striking, Bannon's variety of strikes should trump Tomar's kicking game, leading to a decision or submission win.
The Guru picks Shauna Bannon, citing her 6-inch reach advantage and forward pressure. He notes that Puja Tomar gives up ground and backs up too much, which in close women's MMA fights often leads to pressure winning. He acknowledges Tomar's home crowd advantage in London but still favors Bannon's pressure and cage work. He expects a close 29-28 decision.

Angelo picks Rayanne dos Santos because of her grappling advantage. He notes that Puja Tomar is aggressive and fun to watch but has massive grappling holes, and Rayanne is an aggressive grappler who can get takedowns and control the fight. He is shocked the UFC gave Puja a tough matchup instead of a winnable one.
Big Brady picks Rayanne dos Santos (Amanda) to win by submission in the second round. He notes that while Puja Tomar has power and throws with bad intentions, she is a fish out of water on her back. Amanda is a BJJ black belt and will get the fight to the mat and tap her out.
Cody picks dos Santos, noting that Tomar has no grappling and is a blue belt in BJJ. Dos Santos is a BJJ black belt from a family of black belts. Cody expects dos Santos to take Tomar down and dominate on the ground, likely by submission or ground-and-pound. He sees this as a clear mismatch.
Daniel picks the Brazilian fighter based on national stereotype and experience, admitting he hasn't deeply analyzed the matchup. He notes the Brazilian has fought higher competition and should win if she gets it to the mat, as Tomar has been knocked out before.
Jacob picks Rayanne dos Santos, agreeing with Angelo's assessment. He describes Puja as a cyclone who comes forward aggressively, but Rayanne has a major grappling advantage and submissions. However, he warns that if Rayanne doesn't use her wrestling early and gets lazy, Puja could overwhelm her. He thinks Rayanne can dominate if she gets takedowns and submits her.
Dos Santos is a BJJ black belt with improving striking, while Tomar is a UFC newcomer with poor takedown defense and weak ground control. Dos Santos should push the pace, take the fight to the ground, and find a submission. The loss in her debut will motivate her to secure a win.
Paul picks dos Santos, noting the massive grappling disparity. He expects dos Santos to submit Tomar or win by dominant decision. Paul likes dos Santos by submission at plus 175 but notes the price has been steamed.
The Guru picks Rayanne dos Santos because Puja Tomar's wins are against 'absolute cans' and she lost dominantly to Stamp Fairtex. He notes Rayanne is younger (28), bigger, and has a grappling background, which is how Tomar has been beaten before. He admits Rayanne isn't great and lost her UFC debut, but still picks her.

Round 1
After an essential recovery weekend from the UFC’s never-ending train of fight cards, the engines of the promotion rev up very slowly as the UFC Apex will be its first stop. This much-maligned fight card has fallen down to 10 bouts with a few catchweights and some missed opportunities for the fighters that needed them most. The action begins at 115 pounds, where a pair of ladies with 0-2 records in the promotion thus far vie for their first win. Whether it is dos Santos (14-8, 0-2 UFC) or Ardelean (9-7, 0-2 UFC) who gets their hand raised after the next possible 15 minutes of combat, referee Chris Tognoni will be the first to know. The strawweights touch ‘em up to signal respect towards one another, and then they let the fun begin. Ardelean leads off immediately behind a jab, and she walks dos Santos down and measures her with a one-two. Dos Santos stands her ground and slugs right back, clipping Ardelean with heavy hooks. Ardelean grins, wanting to trade leather, and the Brazilian is happy to oblige her. They take turns one after the other to engage their offense, with dos Santos landing cleaner but showing a bit of swelling on the side of her right eye. When dos Santos pushes off a kick, Ardelean counters her over the top. Ardelean swings right into a clinch, with dos Santos bullying her to the wall as Ardelean works the body with knees. The Romanian turns her foe around in the clinch, and she breaks off with an elbow that bangs into dos Santos’ face. Ardelean presses forward, looking for long, straight punches that are more far-reaching than the hooks dos Santos lobs back at her. They both land flush, and Ardelean shakes it off and comes out swinging with short combinations. Ardelean walks into a right hand, but she still connects a few strikes before backing off. Dos Santos has her right hand chambered ready to fire massive hooks, and Ardelean beats her to the punch with a one-two down the pipe. Ardelean laughs off a right hand to ding the Brazilian with a left, and dos Santos frowns and circles away to reset. Ardelean pitches out a few fastballs down the middle, and she rings dos Santos’ bell with one final combo before the bell.

Round 2
Ardelean marches forward to engage and start off the round, and when dos Santos counters, she ducks down and hits a takedown to put the Brazilian on the mat. Dos Santos pulls on the fence to work her way upright, and Ardelean is on her putting her fists in dos Santos’ face. Ardelean’s jab snaps the head back, and dos Santos responds with a double-leg takedown that runs into a Romanian wall. Dos Santos pushes off with her fingers out, and they jam into Ardelean’s eye socket. She says it is all good and asks Tognoni to let them continue. When given his blessing, she gets right back in dos Santos’ face, using her jab to do work. Dos Santos clubs her with a hook, but the volume discrepancy is growing as Ardelean chains punches in bunches. Dos Santos gets Ardelean’s attention, but this only makes her smile and spurs her on to brawl. Brawl is exactly what she does. Ardelean takes her foot off the gas before expending her tank, and goes back to measuring her opponent with jabs and follow-ups. Dos Santos steps in for an attempted trip and throw, but Ardelean’s base is too solid. Ardelean goes to the body with a right hand, and dos Santos responds with a left hook and a one-two that lands with an audible thud. Ardelean pushes off from a clinch setup, and she leans back to watch a massive right hand buzz by her. Dos Santos times a knee on the chin, and Ardelean no-sells it and quickly is able to defuse a takedown effort that follows. Ardelean plods forward, flicking the jab, and she smacks dos Santos with a low kick. When dos Santos swings high, Ardelean ducks and rips the body. Ardelean connects with a right hand, and she walks into one from the Brazilian that does not make her flinch. A three-punch combo from Ardelean lands on the last one, and she winds up and starts throwing heavier leather and knocks dos Santos back a few steps. Dos Santos tries for another takedown, and Ardelean shrugs it off and ignores a one-two on the chin as the horn sounds.

Round 3
The ladies get right to fighting in the final frame, where they reach the center of the cage and bang it out. Dos Santos leads with a jab, and Ardelean adds up several punches and surprises dos Santos. The Brazilian steels herself and puts everything she has into several power punches, and she lands them cleanly and still does not get her to back off. The right hands from dos Santos mark up Ardelean’s cheek, but she is just as in the fight as ever. Dos Santos keeps Ardelean honest with her firepower, with Ardelean just touching while dos Santos is winging shots. Ardelean’s jab is an effective tool at disrupting the looping blows, but not at stopping them. Dos Santos, who might know she is down on the scorecards, is giving it all she has. Dos Santos cracks her foe with a crisp one-two, and she lets Ardelean swing past her so she can keep hitting her. Punches from Ardelean make a wound that bleeds in the shape of a Joker smile on one side of her face, while Ardelean’s own face is starting to leak around her eyebrow. They show no concern for damage or defense, instead pounding on one another in an entertaining and action-packed manner. Ardelean smiles when she gets tagged, and as she confidently marches forward, dos Santos succeeds in taking her down. Ardelean gets to a knee, and she reverses a second effort from the Brazilian to find top position. Dos Santos kicks her off, and the two get back to their feet and resume their brawl. Dos Santos’ face is swollen and busted up, while Ardelean’s is not much better—although she has a smile that she cannot wipe off of her mug. Dos Santos keeps whipping that right hand, and Ardelean is a welcome recipient of it and is willing to give it back in spades. The two women throw hammers at one another, with Ardelean getting the better of the final exchange. Time expires, and the Romanian raises her arms in the air in expectation that she has done enough.

The Official Result
Alice Ardelean def. Rayanne dos Santos via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
Angelo picks Rayanne dos Santos because she is the better overall fighter with fluid striking, good movement, and solid takedown defense. He notes that Alice Ardelean is tough and a gamer but lacks technique and hasn't shown improvement. He expects a decision win for dos Santos, who should win two out of three rounds.
Big Brady picks Rayanne dos Santos but is hesitant due to her poor fight IQ, as seen in her loss to Puja Tomar where she chose to strike instead of using her black belt. He believes dos Santos has a clear grappling advantage but worries she will stand and strike, leading to a split decision. He ultimately picks her by decision, noting the risk of leaving it to the judges.
Matt picks Rayanne dos Santos to win by decision. He notes that dos Santos is the better striker and BJJ specialist, but has underperformed in her first two UFC fights, losing split decisions. He believes she will kick it up a notch with her back against the wall, mixing in takedowns and top pressure. He is not confident in the moneyline at -265 but likes the decision prop.
The MMA Guru picks Rayanne dos Santos based on her higher ceiling and younger age (27 vs 34). He acknowledges Alice Ardelean could out-physical her but believes dos Santos is the better technical fighter. He notes both are low-level but sees more potential in dos Santos.

Round 1
The penultimate UFC card of 2023 is upon us, and it is certainly an event.
Road to UFC 2 Finals
UFC Shanghai
UFC Vegas 83 will bring a small crop of Asian prospects to the forefront, but it will start with two Brazilian ladies going head-to-head at 115 pounds. Invicta FC atomweight champ Amanda (14-6, 0-0 UFC) will be moving up in weight for her promotional debut, while Alencar (4-0-1, 0-0 UFC) was signed off of Dana White’s Contender Series—from a draw. High finish rates from the ladies mean that referee Keith Peterson might have to get involved before it is all said and done, but before they get after it, the strawweight leave their nonsense at the door and wade towards one another without a glove touch in sight. Alencar sticks out a front kick to introduce herself, and Amanda backs off and flicks out a jab. Amanda springs to the side and gets kicked upside the head, and Alencar crashes the pocket and looks for a takedown. When Amanda pushes her off, Alencar looks for a left hand on the break. Alencar reaches out with an overhand right, and she just misses with a subsequent high kick. The ladies slam fists in one another’s faces at the same time, and Alencar wobbles back but gathers her senses and looks to settle down with jabs and head kick attempts. Alencar misses the mark with an overhand right, and Amanda answers her with a solid right that knocks her foe back. Amanda pushes off with a one-two, and as she overcommits to a strike, Alencar closes in on her and snatches hold of a single-leg takedown. Amanda backs herself up against the fence, keeping her balance, and she leans back against the wall. When she pushes off, she takes a right hand on the chin. Amanda comes out firing, and Alencar responds in kind as they crack one another in the chops. Amanda wings a left hand high to open up a straight right hand down the middle, and Alencar takes a few steps back and gets driven towards the cage wall. Amanda rings her bell with a one-two, and she goes low with a kick to mix things up. Amanda strings several punches together, and she ends a combination with a right hand right on the ear. The two slow down to not burn out their gas tanks early, and Amanda settles down with a few jabs. Alencar attempts a takedown in open cage, and Amanda shoves her back and starts lighting her up with body shots and those up high. Right as the bell sounds, Amanda leaps in the air, and she bounces of Alencar’s forehead—it is a legal blow, technically, so nothing else comes of it.

Round 2
The ladies meet in the middle, and Alencar reintroduces herself with a winging right hand that bounces off the guard, and a head kick try that makes her topple over. Amanda backs off, as if to signal her foe to stand back up, but Alencar butt-scoots towards her. Amanda motions for her to stand up, and Peterson gets between them to make it so. When upright, Alencar throws hard but cannot find her range with her strikes. Amanda prods at her with a low kick, and she leans back from a pair of high kicks that buzz past her. Amanda calmly works her way in, peppering with the occasional kick, and shutting down much of anything coming back her way. When Alencar attempts a head kick, Amanda dips and smacks her in the lead leg. Both women paw out front kicks several feet away from the other, and Alencar struggles to get in. Alencar aims one kick low as Amanda springs from side to side, and the former Invicta champ ducks a pair of punches and nails Alencar with a right hand. Alencar crowds her and jams her up against the fence, and she spams knees to the body to stay busy. With both underhooks, Alencar muscles Amanda to the mat courtesy of a body lock takedown. Alencar lands on top in half guard, and she looks for side control while also attempting an armlock on the other side. Amanda defends against the submission while pushing the shorter woman off of her, and she connects with a few on the chest to keep Alencar at bay. Alencar lowers herself down to deliver some powerful strikes, and she stings Amanda with one right before the round ends.

Round 3
Alencar takes to the center of the cage to start the final frame, and she leads the dance with a one-two as Amanda ducks to the side. Amanda looks for her own short combination, and she ends up countering Alencar with a short right when Alencar attacks. Alencar kicks the body and reaches out with a left hand, and Amanda’s own offense is relatively muted. Amanda looks to strike when Alencar ducks down for a takedown, and she pushes Alencar to the side and whiffs on a haymaker when she breaks away. Alencar tosses out three punches that bounce off the raised guard, and Amanda gets one back on the temple. This same type of exchange repeats itself, with Alencar not landing while Amanda gets one in. Amanda swings for the fences, and Alencar is well out of harm’s way in time. Alencar, not wanting to get hit by one of those booming shots, shoots for a single. Amanda stuffs it and sprints to the side to reset. Alencar meanders forward, attempting kicks and punches, and Amanda calmly responds with a single damaging leg kick. Amanda doubles up on a jab as Alencar walks her down, and she hops back to avoid a head kick and comes up short with an overhand right. Both women get off right hands during a brief exchange, and Amanda separates and connects with a low kick. Alencar attempts a single, and Amanda stuffs her and busts her in the chops with a right hand. Amanda is swinging with everything she has, and she catches Alencar at the end of a right. Amanda smiles with 10 seconds left on the clock, as she draws Alencar into a brawl. This works to her advantage, as she rings Alencar up with a few strikes before Alencar tries to clinch up. This position ends the fight, and Amanda, all smiles, looks for a hug from her now former opponent.

The Official Result
Talita Alencar def. Rayanne Amanda dos Santos via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Cody picks Rayanne dos Santos. He notes that she is a natural atomweight moving up, but she has speed and better striking. Cody points out that Alencar is a BJJ specialist with poor cardio and limited MMA experience. He thinks dos Santos can keep the fight standing and outpoint Alencar. Cody also mentions that dos Santos has good takedown defense and cardio from five-round fights.
Paul picks Rayanne dos Santos. He notes that she has a well-rounded skill set and better striking. Paul points out that Alencar is one-dimensional and gassed in her Contender Series fight. He thinks dos Santos's reach and striking advantage will be key. Paul is not forcing an underdog pick here and goes with the favorite.
Expert Picks (8)

However, he warns that if Rayanne doesn't use her wrestling early and gets lazy, Puja could overwhelm her. He thinks Rayanne can dominate if she gets takedowns and submits her.
