Round 1
Faces are about to get punched by fists the size of lunchboxes. Heavyweights ready and willing to inflict some serious damage will trade bungalows, and only one man expects to be standing when it is all said and done. Cortes-Acosta (16-2, 9-2 UFC) has momentum behind him as well as a six-year age advantage, but he has to throw down with Lewis (29-12, 1 NC; 20-10 UFC). Whether Lewis will suffer another defeat against a tough talent or spring yet another brutal upset knockout, we will know in the next 15 minutes or fewer. Referee Jason Herzog has donned his proverbial hard hat ahead of the mighty swings about to come. There is no plan for a glove touch.
Lewis says hello with a jumping front kick, and Cortes-Acosta easily swats it out of the air. Lewis then kicks low, and the Dominican ignores it and slowly walks down his opponent before kicking him back. Cortes-Acosta jabs with the ball of his foot to the stomach, and he aims a jab to the same spot before leaning back to dodge a left hook. Lewis pitches a jumping head kick that bangs into the guard, and Cortes-Acosta looks surprised that the relative elder statesman and 264-pounder can get his leg up there repeatedly. Cortes-Acosta does not stick his face in the hornet’s nest, instead peeking out behind his jab occasionally. The lack of activity has made fans immediately restless, so Lewis calms them briefly with a failed head kick while touching Cortes-Acosta at the end of a reaching right hand.
There is a lull in the action as no one wants to commit, with Lewis always threatening that he is going to unleash something but pulling back more often than not. When Lewis does lunge forward, Cortes-Acosta bats him back with a counter as he stays in his preferred range chopping away at the front wheel. Cortes-Acosta fires off a one-two that grazes the side of the dome, and Lewis’ counter goes wide. Lewis lets rip a body kick, and Cortes-Acosta catches it and hangs onto it until Lewis flops to his back. Cortes-Acosta lords over him kicking the legs, and he hangs onto an ankle to punch the body a few times. Herzog tells him to choose whether he wants to let Lewis up, and he does. Lewis gingerly gets back to his feet, and walks right into a jab. Lewis lets fly a kick, and Cortes-Acosta slips when dodging it to bounce off the cage. Lewis lashes out with looping punches, and the younger man dodges and weaves away from every one. Cortes-Acosta’s jab ends the tepid round.

Round 2
The heavyweights pick up where they left off, with Cortes-Acosta probing with jabs while Lewis tries high-amplitude, generally inaccurate offense. Lewis scores a body kick in the midst of a surge, but Cortes-Acosta is no worse for wear and keeps the jab right in Lewis’ face. Lewis walks face-first into a clean right hand that surprises him, and he lumbers forward to grab hold of his foe who is out of the way. Cortes-Acosta lets him bounce off the fencing so he can keep pecking at him, and he jams the front leg with a kick. Lewis wades forward with his hands down, taking the jab on the forehead so he can close in. He lobs a big left and a bigger right, but Cortes-Acosta is already two steps ahead of him. Cortes-Acosta snaps the head back with his jab, and he follows one with a right hand down the pipe. “Salsa Boy” keeps probing with his flustering jab, disrupting what Lewis has to offer before it gets thrown.
Cortes-Acosta walks Lewis down fearlessly, and he rolls with a looping left hook and puts his hand in the air to signal that he dodged it. Cortes-Acosta jabs the head and body, and he leans back to take the sting out of a Lewis overhand right.
When absorbing a jab, Lewis slips and feebly falls to his back. The frustrated Lewis turns to his knees under fire, seemingly out of the fight. Lewis turtles up as the Dominican pelts him with right hands, and Herzog urges Lewis to fight on but Lewis will not.
Punches continue to mount until Herzog waves the fight off, and the building does not respond positively to the stoppage or the victor.

Waldo Cortes-Acosta def. Derrick Lewis R2 3:14 via TKO (Punches)
Expert Picks (10)
Angelo picks Waldo Cortes Acosta, citing his athleticism, speed, and technical striking. He acknowledges Derrick Lewis's knockout power but believes Waldo's chin and volume will carry him. He notes Waldo was rocked in his last fight but trusts his durability. He says the odds are probably accurate but warns it's a Derrick Lewis fight where anything can happen.
Big Brady highlights Waldo's durability, noting he ate bombs from Pavlovich and smiled. He thinks Lewis is knockout-or-bust and Waldo is a much better minute-winner. He expects Waldo to cruise to a decision win, as Lewis likely can't knock him out.
Cody picks Waldo Cortes-Acosta but is hesitant due to the price tag. He notes Waldo's jab and footwork could give Lewis problems, but worries about Waldo's tendency to be hesitant against power punchers. Cody sees Waldo winning more often than not but prefers not to lay the heavy price.
Connor picks Derrick Lewis, relying on his proven ability to change a fight with one punch or a wild technique (e.g., flying knee). He argues that Waldo Cortes Acosta is not a consistent fighter and can be drawn into brawls, as seen against Ryan Spann. Connor also notes that Lewis has a history of winning fights he's losing (e.g., Volkov, Hunt) and that his dynamism is a constant threat. However, he admits Lewis's calm has eroded in recent years.
Daniel Vreeland picks Waldo Cortes-Acosta but is hesitant. He notes that he has been wrong about Cortes-Acosta before, picking against him in his last two fights. He acknowledges Lewis's knockout power and get-up game, but believes Cortes-Acosta has momentum and is coming into his own. Vreeland warns that Lewis is always dangerous and that this is a tough fight to call.
James picks Cortes-Acosta via decision, citing his superior boxing and durability. He notes Lewis is on a downtrend, often quitting when tired, and that Cortes-Acosta is smart enough to avoid Lewis's power bursts. He mentions the over 1.5 rounds as a potential prop.
The host expects Cortes Acosta to use his pesky jab and body work to slow down Derrick Lewis, eventually leading to a TKO finish. He notes Cortes Acosta's improved chin and durability, believing he can eat Lewis's best shots. However, he hesitates to play the -350 line, suggesting the method of victory might be a better bet. He predicts the fight won't go to the scorecards.
Paul picks Derrick Lewis by KO, viewing it as a system play. He acknowledges Waldo is more likely to win but believes Lewis's power is a game-changer. Paul notes Lewis's age and cardio issues but says power is the last to go, and he likes the plus money on Lewis by KO.
The MMA Guru picks Waldo Cortes Acosta, citing his talented hands and recent activity. He believes Derrick Lewis's one-dimensional striking will be countered, and that Lewis will quit after getting cracked. He predicts a first-round TKO.
Zane leans toward Waldo Cortes Acosta, citing his youth (34) and calm, consistent approach. He notes that Derrick Lewis has lost his composure in recent fights and tends to brawl recklessly, which plays into Waldo's patient counter-striking. However, Zane acknowledges that Lewis has dynamic fight-changing power and could land a lucky shot. He also mentions that Waldo is not a consistent finisher and could be outpointed if Lewis fights smart.

Round 1
So far this year, Brazilians in UFC headliners are 0-8 against foreign adversaries—and for the sake of this math, Mackenzie Dern, born in Arizona once sporting a Valley Girl accent, is considered an American. We won’t get into the muddiness of “but Merab Dvalishvili has his American citizenship so technically he’s an American male champ” because ain't nobody got time for that. These two heavyweights sure don’t. If this goes the distance, a lot of parlay anchors will bust. Lewis (28-12, 1 NC; 19-10 UFC) is hanging on to his all-time UFC knockout lead, and he can register one more at the expense of skyscraping Brazilian slugger Teixeira (8-0, 1-0 UFC). Referee Jason Herzog will receive the final assignment of the evening, and he brings the big fellas together to bump their equally big fists together. It’s on with the show.
Teixeira moves himself to the center of the cage, and he blocks a head kick. Teixeira catches him with a left hand directly on the eye socket, and Lewis clutches at it and appears compromised. He might be playing possum, as Lewis unleashes fury in the form of a swarm of looping punches.
Backing Teixeira off with a right, it is his nuclear left hand that sends the 6-foot-7 Brazilian flying down to the floor. “The Black Beast” pounces, delivering a punishing barrage of ground-and-pound that knocks Teixeira’s head around.
Teixeira manages to stand up under fire, although he places every finger in the fence to pull on it as hard as he can to do so. Herzog waves the fight off, and Teixeira pushes on Herzog’s face and is upset about the possibly early stoppage.
The victorious Houstonian takes his shorts off, as has become his trademark, and he throws them out into the crowd. He walks over to Teixeira’s empty corner and mimes himself marking his territory like a beast. He proceeds to remove his groin cup as well, pitching it deep into the audience as there is some fan that goes home with a sweaty, stinky souvenir. Ever the classy gentlemen, he drops trou and moons the crowd. He pulls them back up to march over to UFC chief Dana White, who hands him his cell phone—it is President Donald Trump on the other end. Lewis does not share which words were exchanged, but he does remark, “USA up in this hoe.” When commentator Daniel Cormier asks him what he wants next, Lewis deftly replies “my wife” and says she will be soon subjected to some heavy ground-and-pound. What a guy. When Lewis fights next, you best believe we will be here for it. We hope you are too.
The Official Result
Derrick Lewis def. Tallison Teixeira R1 0:35 via TKO (Punches)
Expert Picks (6)
Angelo picks Tallison Teixeira based on size and skill, but is very hesitant due to Teixeira's lack of experience (8 fights) and first main event. He thinks Teixeira is faster and can beat Lewis to the punch, but acknowledges Lewis has one-punch power and could freeze Teixeira. He will not bet on the fight.
Big Brady acknowledges Derrick Lewis's power but thinks Tallison Teixeira is much more skilled and durable at this stage. He notes Teixeira is a BJJ black belt with great volume and power, and Lewis is hittable and has been finished often. He expects Teixeira to finish Lewis early, picking a first-round knockout.
Connor picks Teixeira based on the 'vibe' that he is a young, athletic heavyweight with basic boxing fundamentals and a powerful frame. He acknowledges that Teixeira is untested, with no fight lasting more than three minutes, and that heavyweight prospects often flame out. He compares the matchup to a coin flip, noting that Derrick Lewis can still beat anyone he doesn't respect, but Teixeira's size and aggression give him a good chance to put Lewis away early.
The host sees this as a close fight but likes the value on Lewis at +220. He believes Lewis will be the first to crack back with power against Teixeira, who hasn't faced such resistance. He expects Lewis to clip Teixeira's chin and knock him out. The pick is based on Lewis's power and the odds being favorable.
The MMA Guru picks Derrick Lewis as an underdog, citing Teixeira's lack of quality opponents and Lewis's experience and power. He notes Lewis has knocked out top heavyweights like Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov, and went five rounds with Jailton Almeida. He expects Lewis to mix in grappling and finish Teixeira by TKO in the second or third round, as Teixeira has been hit by lesser fighters and may struggle with the step up in competition.
Zane agrees with Connor, picking Teixeira as the young heavyweight on the rise who has the size, athleticism, and basic technical game to put Derrick Lewis away. He notes that Lewis is technically a shambles with poor footwork and looping strikes, making him vulnerable to a confident, aggressive prospect. However, Zane also acknowledges the uncertainty, stating that Teixeira might just be another flash in the pan like Chris Daukas or Tai Tuivasa.

Round 1
The UFC heard the constant cries of fans calling for more heavyweight and middleweight main events and made sure to deliver. Despite one victory in his last five go-rounds, Lewis (27-12, 1 NC; 18-10 UFC) is entering into his 12th UFC headliner. He hunts for a concussive victory to extend his knockout record with the promotion, and he has been matched up against Brazilian up-and-comer Nascimento (11-1, 1 NC; 4-1, 1 NC UFC). With seven combined decision wins in their 38 victories, referee Jason Herzog will likely be more than in-cage decoration before the heavyweight headliner is all said and done. With no bad blood between them, the two large gentlemen totaling 529 pounds are summoned to the middle of the cage to bump their extra-large gloves. It’s on with the show. Lewis says hello with a head kick, and when Nascimento comes in towards him, Lewis threatens with an inside trip takedown. Nascimento keeps to his feet as he absorbs a right hand to the side of the head, and he turns Lewis around to the floor. Lewis hits a trip and slams “Yogi Bear” to the ground. Nascimento gets right back up, and Lewis greets him with a knee to the belly. Nascimento tries to take him down in response, but Lewis chucks him to the wall and knees him a few more times for good measure. Nascimento gives him a few knees back to think about, and Lewis elbows him. Nascimento hangs his hands over the fence until Lewis breaks away, and he sneaks in a left hand on the break. Lewis takes a step back to avoid a low kick, and he fires off a jumping switch kick and a swarm of four huge punches. Nascimento ties him up, and Lewis uppercuts and elbows him. Nascimento trips Lewis up and puts him down to the ground, where he looks to get some strikes going on top. Nascimento works the body and head, and he hacks down with a pair of powerful elbows. The Brazilian hammers Lewis with a few more elbows before stepping over to half guard on the other side. Nascimento slashes with elbows until he steps over to full mount, and Lewis explodes at the right time to turn Nascimento over and put the Brazilian on his back. Nascimento clings to his man, holding on to the bell.

Round 2
The heavyweights meet in the middle, and Lewis walks through a low kick to sling two hooks. Nascimento gets off a leg kick, and he walks face-first into a huge right hook from “The Black Beast.” Lewis slugs away until the two end up against the wall, and Nascimento holds on to prevent further offense. Lewis thinks about another takedown as they knee one another in the tie-up, and they jockey for position on the fence. Lewis tries to throw his foe down, but Nascimento keeps his balance and stays upright. Nascimento touches Lewis four times, and Lewis drills him with one far more powerful uppercut. Lewis flirts with another trip, and he lets go of the clinch to unleash a series of hammers. Lewis blasts Nascimento with six punches, and Nascimento desperately clings to him to stop him from landing more. Lewis gets enough space to slash an elbow up top, and he leans on Nascimento. Lewis elbows Nascimento and clobbers the Brazilian with some more heavy punches, and he tries a trip but falls over and gives up his back. Nascimento circles around to take his back, and he gets a hook in. Lewis hand-fights to prevent a submission from coming together, and they turn at the same time so that Lewis is on his back while Nascimento is in half guard. Nascimento grinds down with his elbow immediately, and he sits up and slams it down on Lewis’ face a few times. Nascimento remains on top until the horn sounds.

Round 3
The heavyweights lumber towards one another, and Lewis tosses out a slow low kick and a one-two that all comes up short. A jumping switch kick from “The Black Beast” slaps into the side, and he measures himself and jumps with a knee. This time, Nascimento is ready for this and counters.
Lewis gathers himself and unleashes hell with a monstrous one-two that separates Nascimento from his senses. Nascimento, barely still conscious, clings to Lewis’ leg in an attempt to show signs of life to Herzog. Lewis hammerfists Nascimento, turning a bit so that he can get a better angle and pound the fight out with vicious power punches.
After around a dozen punctuating blows, Herzog has seen enough, and the UFC’s all-time knockout leader has just gained one more on his mighty ledger. Lewis drops down to his celebratory predator position, and takes his shorts off and fans Nascimento with them. Lewis flops to his back, and he takes his cup out of his undergarments and throws it at the media row—an undisclosed media member catches the groin cup, and he will now have to wash his hands thoroughly. Lewis is not done yet, as he motions to the crowd that he wants to take off his last remaining garb of clothing. After tossing his gloves into the audience, he pulls his shorts down to moon the fans. In his triumphant post-fight interview, Lewis says he’s “getting too old for this s--t” and that commentator Michael Bisping promised him a drink six years ago. Bisping tells Lewis that drinks on him tonight. Next week, the UFC takes back to the Apex, and we will be there for it. We hope you are too.
The Official Result
Derrick Lewis def. Rodrigo Nascimento R3 0:49 via TKO (Punches)
Expert Picks (7)
Angelo picks Rodrigo Nascimento as an underdog, expecting him to grapple heavily and win a boring decision. He notes Nascimento's path to victory is closing distance, holding Lewis against the cage, and taking him down. He acknowledges Lewis's power and durability but believes Nascimento can fight a perfect 25 minutes. He is surprised Lewis is the favorite given his 1-4 record in his last five.
Big Brady picks Derrick Lewis to knock out Rodrigo Nascimento in the first round. He notes that Lewis typically picks against Lewis but believes Nascimento is unimpressive, having gone life-and-death with Dontale Mayes and taken Alexey Oleinik to a split decision. He thinks Lewis just needs one big shot and that Nascimento is hittable. He questions if Nascimento will wrestle, as he didn't against Mayes, but expects Lewis to land a knockout.
Cody picks Derrick Lewis, citing Lewis's insane power and ability to get up from takedowns despite a wonky get-up game. He notes that Lewis has a history of losing early rounds but finishing late, as seen against Volkov and Pesta. He believes Nascimento is slow, not durable, and lacks the wrestling to keep Lewis down. Cody suggests Lewis by KO is the most likely outcome but recommends the moneyline for safety.
Daniel Vreeland picks Derrick Lewis, citing his status as the all-time KO leader in the UFC and his ability to explode up from bad positions. He notes that Lewis has to win by knockout, but he leads the UFC in that category. He also mentions that Nascimento has shown heart but that Lewis doesn't often give second chances.
The host picks Nascimento to win by submission, citing his superior grappling and multiple paths to victory. He notes Lewis is knockout-or-bust and that Nascimento's takedown game and top control should be decisive. He expects Nascimento to get the fight to the ground and find a finish. He advises against betting Lewis as a favorite and suggests waiting for a better number on Nascimento.
Paul agrees with Cody, picking Derrick Lewis. He emphasizes that Lewis can lose early rounds but still knock out opponents late, referencing the Volkov and Pesta fights. He notes that Nascimento has poor takedown accuracy (33%) and has struggled against lesser competition. Paul suggests that if Lewis gets taken down early, the live betting line could offer value. He recommends the moneyline over prop bets due to the uncertainty of round.
The MMA Guru picks Derrick Lewis over Rodrigo Nascimento, arguing that Nascimento has never succeeded in grappling against any opponent and that his only win is against Alan Baudot (overturned). He notes that Lewis has been in big spots while this is Nascimento's first main event. He dismisses Nascimento's chances on the feet, saying if you think he'll succeed there, you're guessing.

Round 1
Referee Marc Goddard better be ready for this heavyweight main attraction, because the judges can almost certainly take this fight off. For reference, the betting line that this fight ends inside the distance can be found anywhere from -3000 to -10000. Meteorically rising in the division is Almeida (19-2, 5-0 UFC), who has rattled off five finishes since joining the league in 2022. His foe Lewis (27-11, 1 NC; 18-9 UFC) celebrates equalizing power and can never truly be counted out, but it could be rough sledding in this style vs. style contest for “The Black Beast.” The sport is wild, and anything can happen. Before it does, the fighters calmly touch ‘em up. There is no flight from Lewis to start the fight, and instead he measures his distance early with a front kick. Almeida boots the Houstonian upside the head, and he drops down to snatch up a single. Almeida throws Lewis to the mat 30 seconds into the fight, and he lands right in side control. Almeida steps over into full mount, and he turns around to give up his back before taking a shot or two. Almeida searches for an arm-triangle choke, and he pulls Lewis away from the fence to set up the choke. Almeida presses his weight down to try to complete the choke, but Lewis fights the grip and frees his neck from submission danger for the moment. Almeida sits on top without a care in the world, and he hangs on as Lewis looks to toss him off the side. Almeida punches the chest and smacks Lewis with a left hand, and Lewis turns over and gives his back up again. Almeida looks to fasten a body triangle, but he cannot get his legs fully around the waist. Through sheer power, Lewis turns and stands up, and the Brazilian completely stifles his excitement by hitting an easy single and hopping right into mount again. Almeida slashes down with an elbow, and he lowers himself down to set up another arm-triangle choke. The Brazilian partially steps to the side to lock the move down, and Lewis keeps Almeida’s leg trapped between his own. Lewis attempts a sweep, and “Malhadinho” thwarts it and connects with some ground-and-pound. Almeida grinds his elbow down, and he stands up. Lewis follows him up, and he stops a takedown at the tail end of the round and elbows his man in the side of the head until the round ends.

Round 2
Hands are clapped to begin the second round, and Lewis fakes an uppercut to make Almeida think twice about a naked shot. Lewis jumps in the air to fire off a switch kick, and he misses by a wide margin. Almeida pump-fakes and eats a right hand on the side of the head, and he still manages to take Lewis off of his feet with a double and set him gingerly down to the mat. Almeida allows Lewis to turn to his side and stomach so that he can take the back, and he aims to flatten “The Black Beast” out. Almeida sits down on Lewis’ belly in mount, and he gets in short but effective strikes to irritate Lewis. Lewis turns over once more, and Almeida hangs on and drags him around so he can start fishing for a choke from behind. Almeida goes palm-to-palm for more of a face squeeze or neck crank than a choke, and Lewis does not show any cause for concern. Almeida attempts another face crank, at an awkward position with Lewis on his side, and Lewis no-look elbows the Brazilian in the face a few times. Lewis turns over and gest flattened out, and Almeida fastens another tight grip on the jaw. Goddard checks on the fighters to make sure there are no gloves being grabbed, and he tells Almeida that Lewis is grabbing his wrist. Almeida looks irritated, and then starts smacking Lewis in the side and head with elbows and the occasional punch. The strikes continue from “Malhadinho” until the horn blares, ending another dominant round in his favor.

Round 3
Hands are clapped to start the third round, and Lewis is energized and ready to throw hands. Lewis fires off a few uppercuts, and Almeida gets shut down in a takedown attempt as Lewis hammers him on the side. Lewis nearly pushes Almeida over to toss him to his back so he can climb on top, but the Brazilian is savvy enough to slide around to put Lewis on the mat. Almeida steps into mount easily, and he starts working with strikes but is not doing much. Goddard tells them to keep working, and Almeida complains that Lewis is grabbing his gloves when he is just grabbing the wrist. An enraged, empowered Lewis muscles Almeida over and throws him over, and he proceeds to clobber his foe with a number of punches. Almeida tries with all his might to turn the tables, and he succeeds in hitting a sweep to dump Lewis to his back again. Almeida slices over to mount once more, and he appears just as exhausted as Lewis. Almeida manages to gather some steam and hack down with an elbow, but his own offense is practically zero as time ticks off the clock. Lewis turns himself over, and when he is about to fall into submission territory, he turns back about and gets punched in the face for his efforts. Almeida stands up and moves to side control when Lewis falls to his back, and he does nothing when holding the dominant position. Goddard tells Almeida to do something, so the Brazilian stands back and lets Lewis have it. A number of big right and left hands get through, forcing Lewis to shell up, and the round concludes with Lewis possibly saved by the bell.

Round 4
The championship rounds have unexpectedly been reached, and Almeida opens up with a leg kick. Lewis sees a takedown coming, and he blasts Almeida in the face with an uppercut reminiscent of when he knocked Curtis Blaydes’ block off. The strike does not connect cleanly enough to do the damage he hoped, and Almeida succeeds in completing the takedown and putting “The Black Beast” on the floor. Almeida goes into mount fearlessly, and as Lewis looks to bench press him off, the Brazilian hangs on and moves over to the side. Lewis’ subsequent explosion fails, and Almeida smothers him while trying to land a strike or two. Lewis turns over, giving his back up once more and allowing Almeida to maintain a dominant position. Almeida follows a barrel-rolling Lewis so he can keep the back control, and he gets both hooks in and thinks about a rear-naked choke. Almeida bails on it so he can get back on top, and he maneuvers himself into the mount position. Lewis shakes his body to make Almeida break his grip momentarily, and he turns to a knee with Almeida hanging on from behind. The stalemate continues until the round wraps.

Round 5
Defying all expectations, the heavyweights have reached the fifth round for the first time in their respective careers. The two hug, totally exhausted. Lewis is more fired up than usual, and he walks Almeida down and slugs him in the face. Lewis hunts for uppercuts, and he succeeds in shutting down the attempt of his opponent in a wild exchange. Lewis bashes Almeida on the side of the head until Almeida turns the corner to get the fight down, and Lewis hops from one side of the cage to the other to stop it. Lewis keeps himself upright with the fence behind him, until “Malhadinho” decides to lift the 280-ish pound fighter off of his feet and slam him to the ground. Almeida leaps into mount, and he sits there. Goddard asks for more work, which has been an extreme oddity for a dominant competitor in the full mount position. Almeida presses chest-to-chest as he embraces the grind, and Goddard raises his voice to get them to continue moving. Almeida moves back to a partial mount as Lewis’ attempts to buck the Brazilian off all fail. With a minute to go, Lewis explodes back up, and Almeida doggedly pursues the single and throws Lewis down much to the delight of the crowd. Lewis turns to his knees, without absorbing a strike in the whole exchange, and Almeida is warned for grabbing the glove. Lewis stands with seconds to spare, and Almeida concludes the horrific, exhausting and totally one-sided bout by tossing Lewis to his seat one more time. Incredibly, the fighters have heard the final bell in this five-round slog, and they are not happy to have done this. The scores could vary depending on how many 10-8 rounds are issued for the Brazilian, especially in the earlier rounds, but the 50 on his side is practically guaranteed. It may be a moral victory that Lewis went the distance, and that he landed more significant strikes on his opponent than all four of Almeida’s past UFC foes combined. In his victorious post-fight interview, Almeida puts a capstone on his evening by calling out former interim champ Ciryl Gane. If that fight comes together, we will be here for it. We hope you are too.

Jailton Almeida def. Derrick Lewis via Unanimous Decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-45)
Expert Picks (6)
Angelo is very confident in Almeida, citing his dominant grappling and pressure. He acknowledges Lewis has insane power and could land an uppercut, but thinks Almeida will get takedowns and avoid danger. He is surprised the line is tightening and would throw more money on Almeida if it continues. He compares Almeida's potential dominance to Sergey Spivak's performance against Lewis.
Big Brady picks Jailton Almeida to win by first-round submission. He notes that Almeida will shoot for a takedown within 10 seconds, and if Lewis doesn't land a big shot, Almeida will take him down and submit him. He criticizes Lewis's ground game, saying he relies on strength and explosion but can't do that against a BJJ black belt like Almeida. He acknowledges Lewis's power but favors Almeida.
Daniel Levi picks Jailton Almeida, citing his elite offensive wrestling and grappling, especially at heavyweight. He notes Almeida's speed, athleticism, and fight IQ, and believes he will take Lewis down and finish him within two rounds. Levi acknowledges Lewis's knockout power and path to victory if he can survive early takedowns and explode back up, but ultimately sees Almeida's dominance on the ground as too much. He mentions he won't lay the -500 chalk but will look for other angles like parlays or fight to start round 3.
James is extremely confident that Almeida will submit Lewis in round one. He notes that Lewis has been submitted before by Spivac and Cormier, and he expects Almeida to take him down and finish with an arm triangle or rear naked choke. He calls the Lewis win over Lima a lucky knockout and believes Almeida is way too good for Lewis at this stage. He places a same-game parlay: Almeida to get 1+ takedown, win in round 1, and win by submission, which he says is plus 250 and offers massive edge over the -130 price for submission alone at other books.
Almeida is a strong, explosive heavyweight who takes opponents down and finishes them with ground and pound or submissions. Lewis is taking the fight on short notice and often gets finished when he can't get a knockout. Almeida will take Lewis down and pound him out. The fight will end in the first round, so under 1.5 rounds is the safest bet.
The MMA Guru picks Jailton Almeida over Derrick Lewis. He acknowledges Lewis' strength against athletic wrestlers but notes that grapplers who work the clinch, like Sergey Spivak and Alexander Volkov, have succeeded. The Guru believes Almeida's underrated boxing and clinch work will allow him to drag Lewis down and ground-and-pound. He cites Lewis' age (38) and declining movement. He predicts a TKO via ground and pound.

Round 1
One day ago, this heavyweight slobberknocker that will almost certainly end in either a violent knockout or some serious huffing and puffing – possibly both – is now sitting pretty as the “Featured Fight of the Night” due to the cancelation of the Stephen Thompson-Michel Pereira contest. Hunting for his first win since 2021, Lewis (26-11, 1 NC; 17-9 UFC) still holds the UFC’s all-time knockout record, although Matt Brown tied it with him. He draws fellow knockout artist Rogerio de Lima (21-8-1, 10-6 UFC), and the structural integrity of the cage will be tested when these big men get after it. They lumber towards one another, not offering a glove touch, and referee Dan Miragliotta is ready to step in at a moment’s notice. Lewis shockingly leaps in the air, blasting Rogerio de Lima in the chops with a flying knee. Rogerio de Lima collapses to the ground, and Lewis jumps on top and starts hammering him with vicious ground-and-pound. Rogerio de Lima considers hunting for leglock while trying to survive, but he is in a bad, bad way. Lewis continues slugging him on the face and side of the head, and Rogerio de Lima bails on any possible sub setup and just looks to keep it together. Rogerio de Lima turns to his knees, and the writing may be on the wall here. “The Black Beast” continues swarming Rogerio de Lima with everything he has, and Miragliotta has no choice but to call the fight. Lewis unmounts his defeated opponent, takes his shorts off and starts gleefully running around the cage. He proceeds, in just his underpants, to triumphantly motion the crotch chop several times. Lewis jumps on the cage, happy as can be, celebrating in vintage Derrick Lewis fashion. The UFC’s knockout record now singularly sits in the lap of Lewis, who tells commentator Joe Rogan that his contract is now up and that he hopes to be re-signed by the promotion. If not, as he says, “it is what it is.” The rest of the top-notch post-fight remarks cannot be done justice by a simple play-by-play writeup, and must be heard.
The Official Result
Derrick Lewis def. Marcos Rogerio de Lima R1 0:33 via TKO (Punches)
Expert Picks (6)
Angelo is very confident in Marcos Rogério de Lima, stating he is better everywhere except power. He notes that Derrick Lewis is always dangerous with his knockout power, but believes Lima's wrestling, BJJ, and leg kicks will be too much. He placed a 1-unit bet at -129 and notes the line has already moved to -190.
Big Brady picks Marcos Rogério de Lima to win by first-round TKO via leg kicks. He argues de Lima has more paths to victory: knockout to the head, leg kick TKO, or submission. He questions Derrick Lewis's durability, cardio, and mentality, noting Lewis has been finished early in recent fights. He expects de Lima's leg kicks to shut down Lewis quickly.
Cody picks Lewis by KO, noting Lewis's power and ability to come from behind. He acknowledges Lewis's losing streak but points out the level of competition (Curtis Blaydes, Serghei Spivac, etc.) is much higher than de Lima's wins. He believes de Lima's cardio and chin are suspect, especially at altitude, and Lewis's heart and power will prevail. He took a small bet on Lewis by KO at +270.
James believes de Lima should be a sizable favorite, as Lewis is past his prime and has lost four of his last five. He notes de Lima's leg kicks are a key weapon and that Lewis has poor cardio and doesn't like leg kicks. He expects de Lima to land leg kicks early and possibly finish Lewis, though he acknowledges de Lima also gasses.
De Lima is on a good run and has power and leg kicks to slow Lewis down. He can also take Lewis down and smash him from top position. Lewis is on a losing streak and seems to have slowed down at 38. De Lima should be aggressive early to avoid Lewis's late power. I'm leaning on de Lima under 2.5 rounds.
Paul also picks Lewis, emphasizing the talent gap: de Lima's wins are over lower-tier heavyweights while Lewis has fought top contenders. He notes de Lima's history of quitting under adversity (e.g., tapping to a forearm choke against Romanov). He believes Lewis's ability to get back up from takedowns and his power will be decisive, especially at altitude where de Lima's cardio will falter.

Round 1
The heavyweight main event is set to go, with Marc Goddard drawing the final referee assignment of the evening. Both big men are in orthodox stance. Spivak inches forward with feints, and when Lewis steps in to throw, Spivak uses a beautiful scarf throw to put him down. Spivak is in side control, looking for a choke, then moves to the back and throws heavy punches. Goddard looks on, giving Lewis time to work, and Lewis stands back up, only to be hurled down again. Lewis gets back to his feet and Spivak throws him again, with Lewis landing right on his head. Lewis gets back up and Spivak repeats the cycle yet once more. This time, Spivak tries for an arm-triangle and gets it with minimal resistance. He squeezes and Lewis taps. Complete domination on the ground by Sergey Spivak.
The Official Result
Sergey Spivak def. Derrick Lewis R1 3:05 via Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke)
Expert Picks (5)
Big Brady favors Spivac due to his wrestling, cardio, and ability to maul opponents on the ground. He acknowledges Lewis's knockout power but believes Spivac will take him down and make him quit. He predicts a third-round submission win.
Cody picks Spivac, citing his wrestling ability to take Lewis down repeatedly. He notes that Lewis has been taken down by many heavyweights and that Spivac's takedown volume should lead to a finish in round 2 or 3. He also likes the prop of Spivac over 1.5 takedowns on PrizePicks. He acknowledges Lewis's puncher's chance but believes Spivac wins 70% of the time.
Connor picks Derrick Lewis despite acknowledging Spivak's well-rounded game and youth. He believes Lewis's style of surviving and landing big shots has historically beaten grinders like Spivak. However, he is concerned that Lewis's recent aggression and overconfidence may lead to him being off-balanced and taken down. He calls this a 'last ride' for Lewis, indicating low confidence.
Paul agrees with Spivac, noting he got the line at -190 before it moved. He argues that Lewis's weight loss is a red flag at age 37, and that Spivac's youth and improving grappling will overwhelm Lewis. He expects Spivac to get takedowns and eventually submit Lewis, as Lewis has not faced many submission threats. He strongly disagrees with the idea that Lewis will knock out Spivac.
Zane picks Derrick Lewis, agreeing with Connor that Spivak's style is not the kind that beats Lewis. He notes that Lewis has always been beaten by punchers, not grinders, and that Spivak's takedowns are inefficient and may gas him. However, he is concerned about Lewis's recent losses and aggressive mindset, making this a low-confidence pick.

Round 1
The UFC knew exactly what it was doing when this featured heavyweight fight was booked. One man holds the promotion’s all-time knockout record, while the other is a sturdy Russian striker who has won his last three with his fists. Lewis (26-9, 1 NC; 17-7 UFC) who likely will end the night with the biggest pop from the crowd, will try to get back on track after a stunning knockout against the stoic Pavlovich (15-1, 3-1 UFC). Referee Dan Miragliotta will need to keep his wits about him at all times, lest he get clipped by an errant blow, as fighters sporting knockout rates of 80% or higher are about to clash in front of his eyes. Lewis trots out of his corner and offers a glove touch, and it is accepted as the “USA” chants rain down in support of him. Lewis starts with a leg kick, and Pavlovich strides forward and sticks out a jab. Lewis does not bite on any feints, and he scores with a big left hand. They proceed to start slugging it out, and Lewis gets rocked with a right hand on the jaw. The Russian, seeing that Lewis got tagged, cracks Lewis with an uppercut and a right hand that knocks Lewis face-first into the fencing. Lewis backpedals, and Pavlovich gives chase and bombards him with punches. Lewis bends over to avoid the blows, and Pavlovich slugs him with several punches to force Lewis to fall forward and bonk his head on the mat. Lewis springs right back up, and Miragliotta intervenes to stop the fight, clearly seeing something others did not see as Lewis protests the stoppage immediately. The fans are outraged by what they believe to be an early stoppage, and Lewis may have been in trouble but he appeared to have his wits about him given his incensed reaction. Regardless of the feelings on the finishing sequence, Pavlovich has just officially recorded the biggest win of his career in hostile territory. Big fights almost certainly loom for the man out of Eagles MMA.
The Official Result
Sergei Pavlovich def. Derrick Lewis R1 0:55 via TKO (Punches)
Expert Picks (6)
Big Brady picks Sergei Pavlovich to win by first-round knockout. He cites Pavlovich's youth, reach advantage, and high volume striking. He notes Lewis has been finished in most of his losses and Pavlovich has power. He acknowledges Lewis can never be counted out but leans toward Pavlovich landing first.
Cody leans Pavlovich, noting his physical attributes: 84-inch reach, power, and youth. He acknowledges the unknown of Pavlovich's cardio beyond the first round, as all his UFC wins are first-round finishes. He also notes that Pavlovich is a wrestler but chooses to stand and bang, which could be dangerous against Lewis. He thinks Pavlovich's speed and boxing combinations will allow him to hit Lewis before Lewis can counter. He also mentions that Lewis is on the downswing, older, and less motivated.
Daniel likes Pavlovich's youth, output, size, and momentum after three straight wins. He notes Pavlovich's 5-inch reach advantage and his ability to flow punches into kicks. He acknowledges the risk of Lewis' one-punch knockout power, calling Lewis the greatest knockout artist in heavyweight history. He mentions Lewis' age (37), back problems, and tendency to sometimes not show up. He also notes that Lewis has lost in Texas before. He bet Pavlovich at plus 100 and is riding with it, but only one unit due to the volatility.
Preet picks Lewis, believing he will land his hammer and knock out Pavlovich in the first round. He notes Lewis's nuclear power and desire to make up for his loss to Tai Tuivasa. He thinks the odds are influenced by recency bias and that Lewis's Texas pride will drive him. He calls the fight volatile and prefers plus money on either side.
Paul picks Pavlovich but calls it a coin flip. He notes that neither fighter has much appetite for grappling and they will stand in the center. He mentions that Pavlovich has taken less punishment over his career and that Lewis is open to leg kicks and body shots, but Pavlovich is a head hunter. He thinks Pavlovich's reach and power are advantages, but he wouldn't be shocked if Lewis knocks him out. He also notes that Lewis is fighting in Texas and has a history of losing at home.
The MMA Guru predicts Sergei Pavlovich by first-round KO. He expects Pavlovich to land big jabs, push Lewis against the cage with knees, and eventually land a right hand that stuns Lewis. Pavlovich will follow up with ground-and-pound for the TKO. The Guru emphasizes Pavlovich's power and pressure.

A knockout is almost certainly on the menu in this heavyweight clash between beloved big men weighing a total of 531 pounds – one shy of the limit for two men in a UFC cage. Proud Houston native Lewis (26-8, 1 NC; 17-6 UFC) will look to thrill his home crowd, and he will do against willing brawler Tuivasa (13-3, 7-3 UFC). The betting line for this fight going to decision is a massive +425, and a prop for either fighter winning by knockout is -390. Referee Dan Miragliotta will need to stay ready for as long as this fight goes on, preparing himself to intervene at a moment’s notice. Tuivasa may be grinning, but Lewis is the face of intensity; they still do touch gloves. Lewis claims the center of the cage first, as Tuivasa walks around the edge trying to feint his way in. “Bam Bam” reaches out with jabs to the head and body that are well short of the mark, but he does get off a heavy leg kick as Lewis reaches for it. Lewis just misses a looping right hand as Tuivasa crashes forward to clinch up, and the Aussie starts kneeing Lewis’ thighs while pressing him into the wall. The fans begin to react negatively as Tuivasa holds on to this clinch position, with little else besides fence-mashing going on until Miragliotta rather quickly steps in to separate them. Lewis lets go with a head kick, but Tuivasa blocks it right in time. A Lewis flying knee makes Tuivasa back off, and Tuivasa chops down his lead leg to make him slip when Lewis lands. Lewis’ forward momentum shoves the two into the wire, and Lewis changes levels for a single-leg takedown entry. Tuivasa stands him up and elbows him in the face a few times, and Lewis surprises him with an inside trip that shakes the very foundation of the cage itself when they smash into the ground. Lewis starts unloading with brutal right hands, and Tuivasa is hurt but full of determination to stand back up. When the Aussie stands, he throws everything he has back at Lewis, in an effort to start a slugfest. Lewis protects himself from most of them, lands his own, and gets pushed up to the wall. “The Black Beast” hits a throw and drops Tuivasa back to the mat in a surprising display of grappling prowess, but Tuivasa is not settling to stay down. Tuivasa powers his way back up and knees Lewis in the body, and he holds on to the top of the fencing as he knees Lewis in the gut. The round ends in this tight clinch.

Round 2
The big men clap hands to start off Round 2, and Tuivasa comes out with a big smile on his face. Lewis absorbs a leg kick and just misses with a huge right hand, and he hobbles off after taking the kick but could be playing possum. Lewis loads up with a few powerful punches, stinging Tuivasa and knocking him back all the way from one side of the cage to the other after salvo of punches. Lewis tries to take him down, and Tuivasa remains upright and just misses a knee to the face. They begin to start brawling, with no defense and all power strikes. Tuivasa walks through a flurry, chomps down on his gumshield, and blasts Lewis in the face with a salvo of powerful punches. Lewis takes the brunt of the shots on the chin, and suddenly he is hurt! Tuivasa gets off a blistering elbow in close range, swinging with all his might with a few more punches to follow. Right in Lewis’ face, Tuivasa smashes “The Black Beast” with an elbow that wrecks Lewis. The Houstonian crumples, his knees giving way as he falls face-first to the ground. Miragliotta takes a second to realize that Lewis is out cold, and he jumps in to stop the fight. What an unbelievable knockout for an instant title contender, one who has won five in a row by knockout, but none bigger than this one. Leaping on the cage to celebrate his work in what has become a victory tradition, Tuivasa pours a beer into a shoe and chugs it. The UFC has a star on its hands here.
The Official Result
Tai Tuivasa def. Derrick Lewis R2 1:40 via KO (Elbow)
Expert Picks (7)
Angelo picks Tuivasa, believing he is the better striker with leg kicks that can slow down Lewis. He thinks Tuivasa's chin is good enough to absorb one big shot from Lewis. He acknowledges that Lewis is always live for a knockout but expects Tuivasa to chop down the tree with leg kicks.
Big Brady thinks Lewis will win by knockout, as Tuivasa's brawling style plays into Lewis's power. He notes Lewis has been finished by top heavyweights like Gane and JDS, but Tuivasa is not on that level. He expects a first round knockout but admits he can't be too confident in a heavyweight fight. He mentions Lewis's low volume but effective striking.
Cody picks Lewis, citing his proven power and resume against top heavyweights. He notes Tuivasa's wins are over lower-level opponents and that he has been rocked before. He expects Tuivasa to come out aggressive but Lewis to land the cleaner shot and finish him, possibly in the first round.
Daniel Levi picks Derrick Lewis to win, but acknowledges the appeal of Tai Tuivasa as a dog. He notes that Lewis has a history of coming back in fights and that his athleticism is underrated. Levi also mentions that Tuivasa is a more talented kickboxer at range and could land low kicks, but Lewis's momentum and power are key. He says he won't talk anyone off a shot of Tuivasa.
Both fighters have knockout power, but Lewis has the hometown advantage and has shown durability. Tuivasa has leg kicks but Lewis only needs one punch. The fight likely ends in the first round. Lewis by first-round KO is the pick, but it's not a lock due to Tuivasa's own power.
Paul expects a wild brawl but leans Lewis due to his experience against top competition and proven power. He notes Tuivasa is still green and has been rocked in fights, while Lewis has fought and beaten elite heavyweights. He thinks Lewis will catch Tuivasa with a more meaningful shot, likely in the first round.
The MMA Guru picks Derrick Lewis by first-round KO, citing his power advantage and durability. He expects a back-and-forth slugfest but believes Lewis will land the cleaner shot.

When the dust settles after this heavyweight headliner, it is very possibly only one man will remain standing. Two-time title challenger Lewis (25-8, 1 NC; 16-6 UFC) will try to get back to his winning ways and aim to earn the UFC’s all-time knockout honor of 13 when he faces hard-nosed Philadelphia-based brawler Daukaus (12-3, 4-0 UFC). In slugfest that might not last long, referee Mark Smith has put on his proverbial hard hat and is ready for whatever comes. They touch gloves, and any extended fists will come out much faster next time. Taking the center of the cage is “The Black Beast,” and the two measure one another for the first 50 seconds until Daukaus leaps forward with a short flurry. Lewis pushes him away and gets warned for pointing his fingers out, and Daukaus responds with a heavy leg kick. Daukaus comes in with a right hook, and Lewis slips it and just misses with an uppercut. Lewis blocks a punch and comes out with a big right, and they both jab at one another with fingers outstretched. Lewis lands a heavy leg kick and looses a fast combination, but Daukaus does not appear worse for wear. Daukaus darts in and out to attack, getting off a right hand and moving away before Lewis can sit down on the power counter he so desperately seeks. Lewis comes up high with a kick that glances off Daukaus’ forearm, and Daukaus kicks at him low to decent effect. The leg kicks start to add up for Daukaus, and Lewis visibly appears frustrated from eating those kicks. “The Black Beast” successfully scores a jumping switch kick, and he might have Daukaus hurt. Lewis smells blood and unleashes a bombardment of blows that rocks Daukaus against the cage. Lewis trips him up as he continues to work Daukaus over, and he nails Daukaus in the chest with a knee to shake him up badly. Daukaus tries to swing back at him, but he is wobbled and cannot land cleanly as Lewis is putting it on him. Letting loose with a trio of thunderous uppercuts, Lewis knocks Daukaus back, off of his feet and out of his consciousness. Knowing his work here is done, Lewis walks off, as the proud owner of the most knockouts in UFC history. Lewis takes his groin cup out of his shorts, and he throws it into the crowd – a fan happily grabs the strange souvenir without gloves on. In victory, Lewis tells the promotion that he would love a title shot, so long as it does not have to be five rounds – he has no interest in preparing for five-round fights anymore. With that, we say goodbye to the UFC in 2021, and we go on break from this promotion for nearly a month until UFC on ESPN 32 comes back with Calvin Katter vs. Giga Chikadze on display on Jan. 15. We will certainly be here for it, and we hope that after you enjoy your holidays, you are here for it too.

Derrick Lewis def. Chris Daukaus R1 3:36 via KO (Punches)
Expert Picks (8)
Angelo picks Chris Daukaus with a unit on the moneyline at -140. He believes Daukaus is more technically sound, has more power, and should win. He notes that every Derrick Lewis prediction is the same: pick the other guy but give the caveat that Lewis can knock anyone out. Angelo thinks Daukaus will do the right thing and win, but acknowledges Lewis has a puncher's chance.
Big Brady picks Chris Daukaus by first-round knockout, citing his high volume (9.03 significant strikes per minute) and improved cardio after quitting his police job. He notes Lewis's low volume and susceptibility to being hit, but acknowledges Lewis's power and comeback ability. He expects Daukaus to land volume and finish Lewis early, but admits Lewis can never be counted out.
Cody likes Daukaus's speed and mobility at heavyweight, noting his fast hands and BJJ black belt. He acknowledges Daukaus's cardio concerns from his last loss but believes it has improved. He thinks Daukaus can win wherever the fight goes, but warns that Derrick Lewis always carries KO power, so Daukaus must be careful. Cody picks Daukaus but is cautious about the line.
Daniel Levi picks Derrick Lewis to win by knockout. He acknowledges Chris Daukaus's fast hands and impressive 4-0 UFC start with four KOs, but questions Daukaus's durability over five rounds, noting his past knockout loss. Levi believes Lewis's experience and comeback ability, as seen against Volkov and Blaydes, will be key. He expects Lewis to survive the early onslaught and finish Daukaus in the later rounds.
Jacob picks Chris Daukaus, citing Lewis' disappointing performance against Ciryl Gane where he quit. He believes Lewis is on the decline and that Daukaus is a much better fighter from top to bottom. Jacob hopes Daukaus avoids the one big shot and wins to bring fresh talent to the top of the division. He thinks Daukaus should win easily.
The host picks Daukaus by KO, citing his superior boxing and movement. He thinks Daukaus will stay safe, work the body, and eventually finish Lewis. However, he acknowledges Lewis's power and is not fully confident, so he prefers the KO prop at +120 over the moneyline.
Paul agrees with Daukaus but is more cautious, citing Daukaus's lack of shown wrestling and the size difference (Lewis is 270-280 lbs on fight night). He compares the matchup to the Volkov fight where Lewis was losing until a last-second KO. Paul warns that Lewis only needs one strike, so he advises against getting too heavily invested at -140.
The MMA Guru picks Derrick Lewis as an underdog to win by first-round KO. He notes Daukaus is hittable and has poor head movement, as seen in the Abdurakhimov fight. He thinks Lewis has the power and size advantage, and Daukaus is not big enough to grapple with Lewis. He predicts Lewis will land a big right hand over the top for the KO.

At long last, we have reached our main event. Lewis (25-7, 1 NC; 16-5 UFC), in front of a home crowd, will vie for the interim heavyweight strap against unbeaten Frenchman Gane (9-0, 6-0 UFC). No matter one’s thoughts on whether this bout should have a belt on the line, or how the promotion is handling champ Francis Ngannou, this should be a very interesting matchup where one wrong move spells the end of the night. The fighters do touch gloves to set the stage for the big fight, and referee Dan Miragliotta draws the final assignment of the evening and braces himself for impact. The crowd is practically exploding as they chant “USA” that shakes the rafters of the Toyota Center. The heavyweights are tense as they measure the other up, with the only strikes a few low kicks from Gane. Lewis fires off a sudden head kick and falls to his back, and Gane pounces but Lewis is up before anything comes of it. Lewis eats a jab and backs off, where he kicks Gane in the side. Gane stomp kicks his foe’s knee as he feints and fakes his way in, lunging out with a jab and another kick to the knee. Gane slaps at his foe’s leg with a few kicks, and Lewis stands in front of him just staring. Lewis comes forward and pushes away a front kick that comes his direction as Gane tries to keep him at bay, and he draws a reaction out of Gane and makes Gane run away across the fence. The Frenchman gets back to the center of the cage and peppers his opponent with push kicks and jabs. Gane sits down on a leg kick, and another follows as Lewis cocks back his right hand. Gane continues to work the knee as Lewis is stuck playing the waiting game, with a body shot that comes as Gane plods forward. A sweeping body kick from Lewis comes up and clanks off the cup, and Gane grimaces as we have our first called foul of the night. Gane signals he is ready after 30 seconds, and Lewis offers an apology of a glove touch. Lewis has his thigh kicked as he tries to work his way in, and Gane catches him with a swift left hand and avoids a strike from “The Black Beast.” Gane slings up a high kick, and his speed is the difference as Lewis charges at him like a rampaging bull. Gane turns tail and runs away, and the crowd erupts in laughter. Gane gathers himself and calms himself down to kick Lewis with a series of body kicks, and Lewis comes up high with a kick that glances off the shoulder. Gane connects with a jab and a right hand that hurts Lewis, and they both wind up with big shots and might have poked the other the eye. Miragliotta tells them to fight on, and Lewis protests as the round ends.

Round 2
The heavyweights touch gloves as Gane may have been the recipient of an eye poke in the last round, while Lewis took a punch to the eye socket. He wipes his eye out, and he strides out ready for battle. Lewis slings a jumping switch kick, and when he misses, he sits down on a leg kick that makes Gane change stances. Gane reaches out with a knee as Lewis comes at him, and Lewis sits back while Gane keeps changing stances back and forth – the kick may have done more damage than it looked. Lewis extends his arm and may have poked Gane again, but when it is not called, he crashes forward and tries to pursue a sudden takedown. Gane pushes him away, and when they break, Lewis comes up high with a kick that is blocked. Gane kicks the body, and Lewis counters with a flying knee that bounces off the torso. Gane swings with a low kick, and he jumps forward with a knee to the breadbasket as they clinch up. Gane holds tight and knees Lewis in the thigh repeatedly, and Lewis can do nothing but absorb them one after the other to both legs. The crowd grows restless, and Gane shoves his opponent over but Lewis stays upright by grabbing the top of the cage. Lewis eats a left hand so that he can jump forward with a looping right hook, and it brunches off the target as Gane does not appear concerned. The Frenchman chops at his foe’s lead leg, and he suddenly advances with a straight right hand until they clinch up. Gane holds tight and knees “The Black Beast” in the body, and he clips Gane with a right hand. Gane is ready with an overhand right, and Lewis rolls with it but ate it well. Lewis tries to jump in to attack, but Gane is too elusive and dodges another jumping switch kick. Gane comes up short with a head kick, and the second frame comes to a close.

Round 3
The heavyweights touch gloves, and Lewis begins the round throwing first with a front kick. Gane ignores it and lands a leg kick, and another one nearly buckles Lewis’ leg. Gane goes after the same spot again, and the sound of these blows are significant as Gane turns his hips into them. Gane avoids a right hand, and he pushes his hand out and then chops down the leg of “The Black Beast.” Gane keeps hacking at that leg, and Lewis is not checking or moving with them. Lewis plays chase, but all he can do is walk into battering leg kicks. Lewis tries to close in, but he gets too close and initiates a brief clinch. When they break free, Lewis throws a head kick that is easily blocked. Lewis bails on a body kick halfway through, realizing that Gane is well out of the way. Gane just misses with a step-in elbow, and Lewis tries to trip his man down but Gane grabs the fence to stay upright. Gane keeps his balance, and he gets well out of the way when Lewis throws with bad intentions. Gane smashes Lewis with a leg kick, and Lewis falls back against the fence in clear trouble. Gane attacks with everything he has, laying into his adversary with punches and knees. Lewis does not play possum and is in big trouble, as Gane continues to clobber him with punches and knees. In a flurry, Gane makes Lewis turtle up leaning on the wire, and Lewis spits out his mouthpiece. In a brief break after Lewis gets tagged a few more times but survives, Miragliotta pauses the action to replace his mouthpiece. Although Lewis tries to lob a few desperation bombs, Gane strikes again with another kick and a few punches, and Lewis crumbles to his knees. Lewis protects his face as the onslaught continues, with the Frenchman pounding away while Miragliotta asks Lewis to defend himself. Gane shells his fallen opponent with hammerfists until Miragliotta intervenes, and Gane is now the interim heavyweight champion. Nothing but class, Gane gives love to Lewis and Lewis’ home crowd, his team and everyone that helped him along the way. When asked about his future matchup against former training partner and current champion Francis Ngannou, Gane has a simple message: “Let’s go.” Fight fans and media will get a week off from the UFC next week, although PFL and Bellator will be on tap. When it comes to the next UFC event, the show will be an ESPN offering with an interesting middleweight rumble in the main event. We will be here for it, and we hope you are too.

Expert Picks (7)
Angelo picks Gane, citing his superior footwork and technical striking. He believes Gane will dance around, land many strikes, and mix in grappling to avoid Lewis's power. He notes that Lewis only needs one punch but that Gane's movement and fight IQ should prevail. He also mentions he has Gane in his DraftKings lineup.
Big Brady thinks Gane is the much better fighter with dominant striking stats and excellent range management. He expects Gane to stay on the outside and avoid Lewis's power, possibly finishing late. He predicts a fourth-round KO for Gane, but acknowledges Lewis always has a puncher's chance. He calls Gane the biggest favorite on the card for good reason.
Cody believes Gane will win, using his jab, body kicks, and distance management to outpoint Lewis. He notes Lewis's power but thinks Gane can avoid it and potentially finish via submission or TKO. Cody likes the under 4.5 rounds as a parlay piece and mentions Gane by submission as a value prop.
Daniel Levi picks Ciryl Gane to win the minutes of the fight, citing Gane's technical striking, distance management, and overall skill advantage. However, he is very worried about Derrick Lewis's one-punch knockout power, especially in Houston where Lewis is undefeated. He notes that Gane is still developing and could get caught, but believes Gane is the better fighter and should win if he avoids the big shot. He does not lay the price confidently.
Gane has superior cardio and technical striking. Lewis is dangerous early but fades. Gane can work the body, use kicks, and avoid Lewis's power shots. When Lewis blitzes and fails, Gane can capitalize. Gane may also look for takedowns to dominate. The finish likely comes in the third or fourth round via body shot or TKO. The under 4.5 rounds is a strong play.
Paul agrees with Cody that Gane will win, citing Gane's superior distance management, jab, and body kicks. He notes that Derrick Lewis has a puncher's chance but Gane's precision and ring IQ should prevail. Paul expects Gane to win by TKO inside the distance, likely under 4.5 rounds.
The MMA Guru picks Ciryl Gane to win by fourth-round body shot TKO. He praises Gane's footwork, distance management, jab, and front kick. He believes Gane's technical striking will outclass Lewis, who relies on power. He notes Lewis' chin but doubts he can land cleanly on Gane. He predicts Gane will break Lewis down and finish with a teep to the stomach.

The headliner of this fight card comes at heavyweight in the largest matchup of the night, putting a full 522 pounds of meat in the cage plus referee Herb Dean. In a battle of knockout artists with drastically different approaches, the UFC heavyweight all-time leader in takedowns landed Blaydes (14-2, 1 NC; 9-1, 1 NC UFC) faces the promotion’s heavyweight knockout leader in “The Black Beast” Lewis (24-7, 1 NC; 14-5 UFC). Something’s gotta give, and there is sporting glove touch to clock in a match that could end at any moment. Blaydes circles around the outside and lands a single leg kick. Lewis stands firm when his foe advances, and he slings bombs that catch Blaydes standing flush. “Razor” has to evaluate himself after eating those shots, so he backs very far away from his opponent. The two are well out of arm’s reach as Blaydes is looking for entries, and suddenly, both men wing huge power punches that miss their intended targets. Lewis is content to keep his back against the fence as Blaydes steps around and angles. Blaydes throws out a single jab, and he kicks the leg to make Lewis take an odd step. Lewis fires off a head kick, and Blaydes easily blocks it and avoids a front kick that comes after. This stalemate at a long distance persists, punctuated only by occasional single strikes, and Blaydes clips Lewis with a right hand. He hurts his opponent with a left after it, and Blaydes kicks the leg to follow it up. Lewis whiffs with a monster right hand, and he gets his lead leg kick twice more. On the second kick, Lewis winds up with power punches, and Blaydes blocks them and throws another calf kick. A wild brawl ensues, with Blaydes evading the power punches and doing some damage to Lewis’ lead leg with a kick. “Razor” wades forward with punches, and a flying knee rings Lewis’ bell. Lewis simply pushes his opponent away after taking these shots, and Blaydes is on him with long jabs and a calf kick. Lewis’ leg is swollen and battered already, and Blaydes sticks him with a left hand that hurts Lewis. As Blaydes crashes in, he lands an open-handed slap that Dean sees and goes into Lewis’ eye. The round can continue, and Dean gives the two a stern warning. Lewis lets loose a head kick that comes up short, and the round ends.
Sherdog Scores
Jay Pettry scores the round: 10-9 Blaydes

Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Blaydes
Round 2
The second round begins with an advancing Blaydes, who jabs in and has the round pause briefly when Lewis sticks his fingers out. Dean calls a halt to the fight for a second and loudly tells Lewis to stop outstretching his hands. When the fight clocks back in, Blaydes looks to swing big punches into a takedown attempt. Lewis shucks him off and misses with an overhand right. Blaydes slaps Lewis in the face, and Lewis looks to Dean, but Dean says “that was a slap, not a poke, it’s ok.” Lewis is aggravated, and Blaydes charges in from afar.
Lewis times a lethal uppercut as soon as Blaydes ducks down, and the strike shuts Blaydes' lights out before he hits the ground. Lewis follows it with two monster nail-in-the-coffin punches out of the Dan Henderson playbook to seal the deal, and Blaydes is completely stiffened.
It takes some time for Blaydes to regain consciousness, but he is eventually able to sit up and ask what happened. What frightening power displayed from Lewis, who is now tied for the all-time UFC knockout record with 12 alongside Vitor Belfort.
In his brief post-fight interview, Lewis laments his early performance and ponders a future matchup against ex-light heavyweight king Jon Jones, while stating he likes to face wrestlers. With this event in the books, another event capped off by a big heavyweight matchup comes next week, and we will be there for it. We hope you are too.

Derrick Lewis def. Curtis Blaydes R2 1:26 via KO (Punch)
Expert Picks (1)
Daniel Levi acknowledges Derrick Lewis's knockout power and improved get-up game, but believes Curtis Blaydes will stick to his game plan of relentless takedowns. He notes Blaydes' ability to chain takedowns even when tired, as seen against Volkov. Levi expects Blaydes to grind out a decision or possibly a late ground-and-pound stoppage, calling it a horrendous stylistic matchup for Lewis.

The headliner of the evening sees a fascinating style matchup between a knockout artist in Lewis (23-7, 1 NC; 14-5 UFC) against the submission wizardry of Oleynik (59-13-1, 8-4 UFC). This five-round heavyweight contest may very well end one of two ways, with Lewis one knockout away from the all-time UFC heavyweight record, while Oleynik could notch his 47th by tapout should he elicit a submission. Referee Herb Dean will be right there to make sure everything is copacetic as it all plays out, and the two large men – Lewis weighs 38 pounds more than his opponent – touch gloves to introduce themselves. Lewis opens with a head kick, and a hard one-two to hurt Oleynik and push him to the fence. Oleynik quickly sets up an Ezekiel choke, but he abandons it to try to gain a better position with his back to the fence. Lewis throws him down to the ground like Tim Boetsch’s hip toss, and he starts slamming the Russian in the head with punches. Oleynik sits up and looks for a leg, so Lewis spins out from on top to pop over to half guard. Oleynik ties him up from his back as he tries to sit up, but Lewis is content to press his full body weight down on his opponent. Oleynik gets back to his knees and ties up Lewis’ leg to land his own single and wind up on top. He gets to side guard with ease, and secures a scarf hold headlock and wrenches on Lewis’ neck. Lewis powers out of the bad spot and starts raining down punches, but Oleynik ties him back up and clings to him like Saran wrap. Oleynik reverses the position and gets back to side control, where he aims for a scarf hold headlock on the opposite side. He lets go to readjust, and Lewis wriggles and turns his head while Oleynik puts everything he has into the choke. Lewis appears unconcerned and rides it out as veins bulge on Oleynik’s forehead while he applies the torque. The Russian recommits to the choke, and Lewis is trapped but not entirely in danger. Oleynik bails on the choke and elects to take side control and set up a keylock. Time expires before he can land it.
Sherdog Scores

Round 2
Oleynik reaches with a front kick, and Lewis leaps at him with a flying knee.
A bomb of a right hand takes the legs out from the Russian, and as “The Black Beast” rains down punch after punch from on top, Oleynik turns to his side. Unleashing a barrage of nasty punches. Lewis smells blood and knows the finish is right around the corner. Lewis keeps clubbing Oleynik in the face until Dean has seen enough and stops the fight.
Lewis is now the all-time leader in heavyweight knockouts, scoring his 11th inside the Octagon. Lewis survived adversity and got the Russian out of there to end the night with style points. See you next week, for a much higher stakes heavyweight contest at UFC 252.

Derrick Lewis def. Alexey Oleynik R2 0:21 via TKO (Punches)
Expert Picks (4)
Big Brady picks Oleinik as an underdog, believing he can get the fight to the ground and secure a submission. He notes that Lewis has poor takedown defense and often rests on the ground, which could be dangerous against a submission specialist like Oleinik. However, he acknowledges Lewis's explosive power and ability to pop up from bottom, making this a tough call. He leans Oleinik by submission in the first round.
Daniel Levi picks Derrick Lewis to win by knockout. He notes that Lewis has a tendency to lose the first two rounds but then come back with his signature 'black beast blitz' and knock out his opponent. He also mentions that Oleinik has a 7-10 minute window to get a submission, but if he doesn't, Lewis will likely finish him. Levi acknowledges that Oleinik is dangerous on the ground but believes Lewis's power is a different level.
Lewis has freakish power and can knock anyone out, but Oleinik is a dangerous submission artist who can get the fight to the ground. Lewis has shown the ability to get back to his feet, but Oleinik's jiu-jitsu is elite. The line at -265 is too wide; Oleinik offers value. Lewis likely wins by first-round KO, but it's not a bet.
The MMA Guru picks Aleksei Oleinik to win by first-round submission via rear naked choke. He criticizes the oddsmakers for making Lewis such a big favorite, citing Lewis's close fights against Ivanov and Latifi. He believes Oleinik's grappling will be too much for Lewis, who loads up on big shots and leaves himself open for takedowns. He notes that Oleinik has a reach advantage and will transition from position to position, eventually taking Lewis's back.

Lewis takes the center of the Octagon as he welcomes Latifi to the heavyweight division. they tie up, and Lewis lands a knee to the body before shoving his foe into the fence. Latifi lands a couple short punches in close before breaking away. Latifi claims he was poked in the eye, but Dan Miragliotta isn’t having it. Lewis launches a jump knee that lands on the chest of Latifi, but the Swede doesn’t seem to be affected. Latifi secures the clinch and then transitions to a single leg. Lewis maintains his balance and Latifi relents. He continues to drive Lewis into the fence, however. Not much is happening in this position, and Miragliotta urges the heavyweights to work before ordering a separation with less than 2:00 remaining. Lewis fires off a surprisingly quick high kick. Moments later, “The Black Beast” lands a body kick, prompting Latifi to shoot. Latifi drives his opponent back into the fence, drawing boos from the crowd. Lewis shows off outstanding defense of the single-leg takedown as Latifi is content to grind away against the fence. They break with 20 seconds left, and Lewis misses a leaping knee in the waning seconds. 10-9 Lewis.
Round 2
Lewis opens with a high switch kick. Latifi blocks it but he felt the blow nonetheless. Latifi answers with a hard low kick. Another hard leg kick from Latifi briefly backs up Lewis, who answers with a kick to the body. Lewis tries the flying knee, but Latifi avoids it and shoves his adversary into the cage again. More boos as Latifi doesn’t offer much in the way of offense from this position. Lewis is able to reverse the position, and he lands a short elbow and a knee. However, that allows Latifi an opportunity to land a body lock takedown, and he lands in half guard. The Swede lands some short punches to the body, but nothing of consequence. Latifi is trying to stay busy enough to avoid a standup, but he doesn’t appear to be interested in passing beyond half guard. With 50 seconds left, Miragliotta orders a standup. Lewis jabs and misses a big right hand. Latifi blocks a high kick, secures the clinch and tosses Lewis to the mat. He dives into guard and ends the frame in top position, landing a couple solid right hands before the horn. 10-9 Latifi.
Round 3
Lewis launches a big overhand right, and Latifi counters, but neither man connects. A solid right lands for Lewis moments later. Lewis again goes back to the jumping knee, but it allows Latifi to secure double underhooks against the fence. Latifi drops low and lifts Lewis, dumping him on his back in the middle of the canvas. Latifi is back in half guard with about 3:30 left in the fight. Latifi stays just busy enough, alternating punches to the body and head. Lewis doesn’t look like he has much hope of returning to his feet from this position. The crowd doesn’t like it, but it’s effective. Lewis powers his way up with 2:00 left. Another flying knee comes up short for Lewis, who is on the attack. His aggression allows Latifi to secure the clinch with double underhooks. Lewis pummels free and lands a knee, but Latifi shoves him back into the fence. There’s only a minute left. Latif trips Lewis down but the Houston native hustles up immediately. A kick from Lewis appears to have hurt Latifi somewhat. Latifi quickly ties up, and Lewis lands some hard elbowsand shrugs his foe off. An uppercut lands for Lewis with Latifi on the retreat. They clinch once more as Latifi sneaks a look at the clock. The round ends as Lewis misses one more big right hand. 10-9 Lewis (29-28 Lewis).

The host does not pick a side, citing the unpredictability of Derrick Lewis and the difficulty in trusting either fighter. He notes that Lewis has power but questionable cardio and technique, while Latifi has a wrestling advantage but may not keep Lewis down. He advises caution and suggests staying away.

Heavyweights are set to throw down as Lewis (21-7, 1 NC; 12-5 UFC) attempts to become the first fighter to ever knock out the
incredibly durable and fearless
Ivanov (18-2, 1 NC; 2-1 UFC). Attempting to keep a lid on this 522.4-pound potential slugfest is referee Todd Anderson. They touch gloves, and Lewis immediately walks down Ivanov. The Bulgarian keeps his distance, pawing out a right jab to figure out his range, and chants of "USA" rain down from the crowd. Lewis whiffs on a low kick, but Ivanov is unable to capitalize on it as he tries to feint his way in. Lewis stalks down Ivanov and tries to cork a right hand, but instead throws a body kick. Ivanov catches it and pulls Lewis down, where he steps right into side control and looks to set up a crucifix position before yanking on Lewis' arm. Lewis explodes to his feet and throws everything he has into a few punches that catch Ivanov square. Ivanov is hurt, but he shakes it off, so Lewis throws a head kick that makes him fall over. In the clinch, shockingly Lewis shoots in for a takedown, and he hits it. Ivanov stands back up without much effort, while Lewis leans heavy on his opponent. Ivanov pulls into a Thai plum and fires a knee up the middle, and "The Black Beast" eats it without issue. Hanging tight on one another, they occasionally separate to throw a punch or two, and Ivanov tries to throw Lewis over his hip but Lewis stays upright. Lewis swings heavy with right hands, and as Ivanov breaks free, he trades right back. We return to the center of the cage, and seem content on trying to set up that huge overhand shot -- Lewis with his right, and Ivanov with his left. Neither score it, although Ivanov aims at the body once, and the horn sounds. Close round put in by these two to start things off.

Round 2
The second round begins with chants of "Let's go Lewis," but neither man react to it, until Ivanov slams a big left hook directly on Lewis' chin. The Texan wears it well and tries to clinch up, and on the break barely misses with a big uppercut. Lewis lands a decent leg kick, and then leaps in to crack Ivanov with punches. With his back against the fence, Ivanov unloads some bombs and appears to briefly hurt Lewis. "The Black Beast" throws wildly, and takes a moment to rest, so Ivanov takes him down. Right into side control, Ivanov aims to secure a keylock, but Lewis holds a thumbs-up to indicate that he is alright. Like the first round, Lewis bursts out of the position and stands up, and follows that with serious hooks that bloody up Ivanov under both of his eyes. The Bulgarian survives the brunt of the assault and circles away, before they take a break in the center of the cage. Ivanov crashes forward into the clinch and brings up a solid knee before throwing a couple uppercuts. Lewis cracks Ivanov with a huge knee, and Ivanov practically shrugs it off and walks Lewis down. A lead right hand is followed by two lefts from Ivanov, and Lewis stays calm and takes it on the jaw while trying to catch his breath. With seconds left, Ivanov throws Lewis to the ground and pulls for a guillotine. It is not tight, and the round ends.

Round 3
The final round begins tentatively, with the two touching gloves and taking their time to engage. Finally, Ivanov leads in with a right and then a looping left, but Lewis is out of the way in time. Lewis chambers a right hand and finally sends it Ivanov's direction, but it does not find the target. Ivanov digs to the body with a few punches, so Lewis fires back with a big right that misses as well. The Bulgarian initiates the clinch, and although he lands a knee and a few uppercuts, the pace has waned significantly between these two large men. Ivanov almost trips Lewis to the ground, but Lewis regains his footing and reacts to a faked shot from Ivanov. Lewis swings with all his might in an uppercut that would make a Mortal Kombat player blush, but it merely blows the hair back from those in the front row. Lewis whiffs with a big right, but he lands a knee, and rushes in to take Ivanov down. Ivanov cannot set up a choke, so Lewis pops out and throws a vicious right hand that Ivanov ducks. The Bulgarian briefly considers changing levels to get Lewis down but there is nothing doing, so he instead goes after a few short uppercuts. Lewis tries to fire back with an elbow, but it glances off the side of Ivanov's head. With 15 seconds left, the crowd roars to life as the two men trade wildly. Lewis tags Ivanov with a right hand and then a knee, and this fight comes to a glorious end. The scorecards could be all over the map in this fight, as these rounds have been very close. The scores delivered by our official scorers may not quite reflect how just close this fight played out.

Referee Herb Dean is the third man in the cage for tonight’s heavyweight main event, with judges Douglas Crosby, Sal D’Amato and Chris Lee scoring the bout should it complete the scheduled five rounds. Lewis strikes first with a switch kick to the body, then goes to the lead leg of Cormier. The champion answers with a low kick of his own as he closes in on Lewis, changes levels and double-legs him to the floor. Cormier sits up in his challenger’s half guard, but Lewis quickly grabs hold to try and minimize the space Cormier has in which to strike. Cormier is still managing to land some hard, grinding elbows as they hit the halfway point of round one. Lewis rolls to his knees, then stands up as Cormier tries to hold him in the wrestling ride. “DC” spins Lewis to the ground with a single-leg and gets back to elbowing, now landing short right hands from Lewis’ half guard. Lewis rolls to his knees, eats a few left hands and nearly has his back taken. Instead, Cormier shoves the kneeling “Beast” against the fence and holds him there, looking for an opportunity to knee which does not materialize.

Volkov fires a range-finding kick, then goes to the legs as Lewis throws his first punches. Lewis tries a left high kick of his own but can’t reach the head of the towering Volkov. The Russian presses forward, stinging Lewis with a body kick, but the “Black Beast” withstands the follow-up punches. In a bizarre sequence, Volkov lands a left hand and Lewis comes away holding his right eye. Referee Herb Dean tells Lewis to fight on, but then Volkov backs off and appears to ask Dean to pause the fight. The ref calls time, Lewis takes a moment to recover from the phantom eye poke, and then Volkov motions to his mouth, seemingly accusing Lewis of a foul. Action resumes and Lewis shoots an awkward double-leg which is stuffed by Volkov, who comes down in top position. Lewis uses an underhook to stand, then blasts Volkov with a big overhand right. Lewis tries to press Volkov against the wall, but “Drago” reverses course and trips the Texan to the mat with just under two minutes on the clock. Volkov works from side control on Lewis’ right, slamming the American’s jaw and midsection with elbows. Lewis rolls to his knees and Volkov jumps on his back, establishing back-mount with both hooks in. Lewis uses two-on-one control to fend off the rear-naked choke, then turns over and winds up on top of Volkov with 25 seconds left. Lewis lands a heavy elbow, then stands up and blasts Volkov with three or four hard right hands as the wild opening round comes to a close.

Volkov charges forward and hits Lewis with a right hand over the top; Lewis doubles over and eats a few more punches, but he’s able to recover, such as it were, and circle away. Lewis grabs for Volkov’s legs but can’t get hold of the Russian, who continues to walk down the “Black Beast” with measured jabs. Lewis gets rocked with a right and tries to tie up, then has to bail when it looks like Volkov might reverse and trip him. Lewis is certainly exhausted, his right eye swollen, but he may be doing just a bit of rope-a-dope here, as he offers up huge right hands whenever Volkov steps into range. Volkov continues to apply pressure, switching between southpaw and orthodox as he stalks Lewis around the outside with two minutes on the clock. Lewis is doing better to avoid damage now, but his offensive output is just a smattering of Hail Mary counterpunches. Volkov is walking straight at Lewis with hands dropped low, and Lewis makes him pay by knocking out the Russian’s mouthpiece just before the end of the frame.

The American climbs back to his feet after narrowly avoiding an uppercut on the ground. Volkov again rocks Lewis with a combination, causing him to double over, and still the Russian is unable to finish the fight. Lewis appears to be in serious pain, grabbing at his injured eye whenever “Drago” touches it. Volkov forces him backward with leg kicks and jabs as they hit the halfway point of the round. Lewis offers up a body kick and gets three in return from Volkov, who covers up as Lewis swings for the fences with his right hand. Lewis gets backed up by leg kicks again, then swings a right hand across Volkov’s face that causes the Russian to retreat. Lewis is on the advance with 20 seconds left, and he comes over the top of a Volkov low kick to floor the Russian with a big right hand. Volkov’s legs give way and Lewis is all over him, posturing up in Volkov’s half guard to unload with brutal right hands. Volkov’s head is rattled by the first four punches, but the fifth and sixth knock him out cold. Referee Dean steps between the fighters as the Las Vegas crowd explodes. Derrick Lewis pulls off what must surely be the comeback of the year, laying waste to Alexander Volkov with just seconds left on the clock. Wow.

Lewis, circling off his back foot, pauses and steps forward to counter an Ngannou low kick with a right hand. Ngannou switches to orthodox after Lewis throws a switch kick to the body. Lewis is being backed up to the fence, creating some space with kicks, then getting backed up again. Ngannou pressures Lewis backward to the fence until Lewis backs him up with a high switch kick. Ngannou switches between stances as he jumps around in front of the "Black Beast." A few leg kicks land for Lewis as the tepid pace continues. With 1:10 on the clock, referee Herb Dean finally intervenes, cautioning the fighters to engage or risk a point deduction. Lewis gets a bit busier after the restart, though not by much, and the final minute ticks away without incident.

It's more of the same as the final round begins, with another minute of nothing between the big men. Ngannou fires a quick left high kick from the southpaw stance, but Lewis gets a glove up to block it. Referee Dean calls for action again; Lewis grabs for a clinch or takedown and is shoved away. With two minutes left, Lewis counters a kick from Ngannou with a left hand that puts the "Predator" in reverse. Lewis ducks as he steps forward and puts a punch on Ngannou's body. Ngannou throws a high kick and winds up spinning around as Lewis ducks underneath. Down to the final 40 seconds, Lewis lands a body kick and slips his head off center to avoid Ngannou's left hand. Ngannou catches a kick and tries to take down Lewis in the final 10 seconds. With Lewis leaning forward, balancing on his hands, Ngannou lands a cheap shot after the horn, a fittingly ugly end to one of the worst fights you'll see this year.

England's Marc Goddard is the referee for tonight's heavyweight main event, with judges Howie Booth, Barry Foley and Charlie Keech scoring at cageside. A slow opening minute sees Hunt trying to work his way inside on the taller man, while Lewis fends off the heavy-handed striker with kicks to the lead leg and body. Hunt keeps pressing out from the center, backing up Lewis to the fence, and finally the "Super Samoan" lunges in to connect with a sweeping left hand. Lewis has a pair of head kicks bounce off Hunt's right shoulder, then backpedals away when Hunt threatens to throw hands again. Hunt is feinting now and getting Lewis to bite. Lewis misses on another left high kick but pops Hunt with an uppercut behind it. Hunt steps in with an overhand right, sprawls on a shot from Lewis and hits the "Black Beast" with an uppercut. Hunt charges inside again, and Lewis slips to a knee while backing up. Lewis jumps up before Hunt can capitalize, and now the heavyweights reconvene in the center of the cage. Hunt pushes Lewis backward with a chopping leg kick, then has to back up as the American tries a flying knee. Hunt catches a body kick in the closing seconds and kicks back at Lewis' back leg.

Hunt takes up the center of the cage again and stalks Lewis around the outside. Lewis blasts his way back to the middle with an awkward leaping kick. Hunt is soon on the march again, keeping his hands in Lewis' face as the "Black Beast" circles with his back to the fence. Hunt continues to work his leg kicks, and Lewis is starting to check the strikes now. Hunt takes a finger to the right eye from the outstretched hand of Lewis, but the Kiwi says he's good to continue. Hunt whiffs as he steps into the pocket with a big overhand right, but it's Lewis landing a counter right hook that backs up the K-1 vet. Lewis continues to fire kicks at the head of the shorter man, this time pulling up just short with a switch kick. Hunt, meanwhile, resumes walking Lewis around the perimeter, still landing leg kicks as they enter the last two minutes of the round. Lewis eats a right hand and starts to circle away, and Hunt lunges after him with another big right hand. Lewis looks to have cleared the cobwebs before Hunt can capitalize on the sequence, and now Lewis is scoring with counter right hands as Hunt marches after him. Hunt pops Lewis with a few more punches, then appears to think the round is over and turns to walk away. As he's called back by referee Goddard, Lewis nearly lands a left high kick, but Hunt dodges it and finishes the round with another combination at the fence.

Round 3
Lewis' hands are hanging low as he circles to his right in the opening minute of round three. Hunt stays measured, walking down the "Black Beast," always keeping Lewis on the outside. Lewis appears to poke Hunt in the eye again, but there's no complaint from Hunt. An uppercut scores for Lewis, but his follow-up punches go wanting as Hunt ducks and dips away. Hunt comes forward again, deflecting a lead uppercut from Lewis, who is suddenly looking very tired. Lewis gets Hunt to back up with a partially landed left hook, but "Hunto" is soon on the advance again. Hunt lands a leg kick, sticks a jab, now midway through the round and possibly the fight. Lewis tries to push Hunt away with a front kick, then shoots for a double and gets brushed aside by the local favorite. Lewis blocks an overhand right but comes away from the exchange with his hands on his hips. Hunt goes to the body with a right hook, now a left uppercut, and Lewis continues to back up with his hands held low.

Round 4
Lewis continues to hold his hands very low, breathing with his mouth open as he moves slowly around the outside. Hunt follows him from the middle, looking to land a big right hand, but Lewis continues to evade the power punches. Hunt lands a heavy leg kick, flashes a jab and comes over the top with a right hand. Lewis backs up Hunt momentarily with a tired left hand, but Hunt comes straight back with a body punch. Lewis looks to be struggling just to remain vertical as he stumbles backward around the edge of the cage. Hunt catches him with a big right hand to the jaw but lets Lewis off the hook with no follow-up offense. Lewis tries a last-dich leaping knee and right hand, comes up short and has to back up to the wall again. Hunt starts to unload with uppercuts and elbows as Lewis covers up and doubles over. Referee Goddard is telling Lewis to fight back, but Lewis is clearly finished, offering no intelligent defense, and the fight is stopped. Mark Hunt collects a fourth-round technical knockout of Derrick Lewis before an ecstatic New Zealand crowd.

Veteran referee Mario Yamasaki is the third man in the cage for tonight's heavyweight main event. Lewis misses with his first reaching right hand, and Browne counters with a short left hand on the ear. Browne circles to the outside, leaving Lewis in the center; Browne lands a leg kick, while Lewis slaps the Hawaiian's chest with a right kick. Browne lands a kick to the liver which prompts Lewis to cover his midsection with both hands. Lewis stays this way for roughly 20 seconds, but Browne is clearly hesitant to rush in and try for the finish. Instead, "Hapa" throws more low and body kicks, while Lewis slowly recovers from the body shot. A short right hand from Lewis sends Browne to the mat, but he's back on his feet before Lewis can tack on any ground-and-pound. Browne catches Lewis coming at him and lands a sharp knee to the gut, and Lewis turns his back, clutching his stomach again. Browne tries to chase him down, but Lewis spins around and clinches on the wall for a few seconds to recover. More body kicks connect for Browne in the final minute, but Lewis is protecting his right side now.

Browne goes straight back to the midsection of Lewis as they plod around the edge of the cage in the opening minute of round two. "Hapa" is controlling the center, using slow, measured movements and firing mostly kicks. Lewis isn't doing much in the first minute, but he comes alive after catching Browne with a right hand to the jaw. Browne covers up, his back against the wall, as Lewis tees off with both hands. An uppercut gets through cleanly for Lewis, but Browne looks up to tell referee Yamasaki that he's not hurt. Browne withstands the assault and tries a throw with double underhooks; Lewis blocks the throw and comes down to Browne's half guard. Browne gets back to his feet, but only for a split second, as Lewis trips him back to the mat. Halfway through the round, Lewis goes knee-on-belly to drop right hands, but Browne rolls inside and escapes to his feet. Both men wind up with big right hands, and it's Lewis which bounces off Browne's forehead and sends him to the ground. Lewis pounces and smashes Browne unconscious with several follow-up punches, and referee Yamasaki dives in for the stoppage.

Referee Dan Miragliotta is the third man in the cage for tonight's heavyweight main event. Lewis starts out in the center of the cage, slowly pressing outward toward Abdurakhimov, who cuts short angles around the perimeter. Abdurakhimov catches hold of Lewis' first kick and takes the "Black Beast" to the ground in the center of the cage. Straight to side control goes Abdurakhimov, leaning left to right across Lewis' body to frame up a keylock. Lewis rolls to his left, instantly relieving pressure on the arm and allowing him to stand up. Abdurakhimov stays with him, holding a rear waistlock until he's able to push Lewis against the fence. Lewis throws a knee, has the leg caught but keeps his balance and stays standing, while Abdurakhimov goes back to muscling him against the wall. Abdurakhimov gets double underhooks as they hit the midway point of round one, but Lewis pushes him away with a forearm to the face. With 90 seconds on the clock, Lewis initiates a clinch on the fence, but he's quickly spun around by Abdurakhimov. The big men split with one minute on the clock, but Abdurakhimov comes back for a late takedown and finishes the round in full mount.

Both men throw big right hands at the start of round two, and they wind up clinching with over-unders in the center of the cage. Lewis gives Abdurakhimov a shot to the body before the Russian presses him against the fence. Referee Miragliotta warns Abdurakhimov for grabbing the fence behind Lewis' back, and seconds later, Lewis nearly tosses Abdurakhimov to the side. The ref separates the fighters and brings them back to the center after a few seconds of ineffective clinching. Lewis slings a big right hand but it's deflected by the arms of Abdurakhimov as he steps inside to clinch again with three minutes left. Lewis breaks away, nearly slips to the ground throwing a high kick, now walks forward on Abdurakhimov once again. Lewis lands a body kick, but it's caught by Abdurakhimov and converted to another takedown. Abdurakhimov works from Lewis' wide open guard with 90 seconds on the clock, but there's not much happening on the ground, drawing boos from the Albany crowd. Lewis gets hold of a leg and drops back to try a heel hook; Abdurakhimov escapes and latches onto Lewis' left leg as he stands. Lewis hops backward to the fence, socking Abdurakhimov in the face with a few punches before ultimately being taken down again in the closing seconds.

Lewis steps in with a knee, caught by Abdurakhimov and turned into another takedown. This time, Lewis springs back to his feet and starts firing punches at Abdurakhimov, keeping the Russian on the outside through the first minute of the round. Abdurakhimov shoots an ugly shot, gets pushed away and clipped by an uppercut from Lewis, who steps back to reset in the center of the cage. Lewis is walking in slow, small steps, not expending a lot of energy as he follows Abdurakhimov around the perimeter. This time, it's Lewis who ducks inside, pushes Abdurakhimov to the fence and drops for a double-leg. Abdurakhimov easily blocks the takedown attempt and circles away. Abdurakhimov whiffs on a spinning backfist, dodges Lewis' counter right hand and goes low to drive "The Black Beast" back to the canvas. Under two minutes left in the round as Abdurakhimov works from Lewis' closed guard. After almost a minute of inactivity, referee Miragliotta stands up the fighters. Lewis plods forward slowly as boos rain down again; Abdurakhimov, who continues to back away, receives a verbal warning from the referee for failing to engage.

Round 4
Lewis tries to go upstairs with a left high kick, but his leg is grabbed by Abdurakhimov once again. The heavyweights tangle up on the fence for a few seconds, then Lewis snuffs out an Abdurakhimov double-leg shot. Abdurakhimov resets and then comes right back to hold Lewis on the wall. Almost immediately, referee Miragliotta tells the fighters to "get busy," and Abdurakhimov obliges by breaking off the clinch with an elbow strike. Halfway through the round, Lewis pulls down Abdurakhimov's head in the Thai clinch and partially lands with a knee. Lewis changes levels and scores a takedown at the fence, and suddenly it's Abdurakhimov on his back, covering up as Lewis postures up to land big right hands. Lewis goes knee-on-belly, then over to full mount; Abdurakhimov bucks and rolls underneath, trying to escape, but Lewis is relentless and smashes away with punches until the referee stops the fight.

Lewis opens with a couple kicks to the midsection of Nelson, who stakes out the center of the cage to start the fight. Nelson runs at Lewis with a right hand, misses and winds up pressing the “Black Beast” against the fence. Lewis widens his base and stays vertical with the help of a cage post, while Nelson stays glued on and tries to wrestle the larger man to the floor. After a minute or so of inactivity, referee John McCarthy separates the big men. Lewis bursts forward with punches and a head kick, but Nelson changes levels and drives him to the mat for the first takedown of the bout. Lewis powers back to his feet and drills Nelson with a knee to the stomach, then follows up with two or three big uppercuts as Nelson tries to wheel away. Nelson gets hold of Lewis and pushes him against the fence again, slowing the pace with 90 seconds on the clock. Referee McCarthy breaks them up again with 30 seconds remaining in the round, and Lewis goes on the offensive with more big uppercuts. Nelson looks hurt, stumbling backward as Lewis attacks, but once again “Big Country” is able to wrap up his opponent for a takedown.

Round 2
Both heavyweights are looking for the homerun shot early in the second stanza, but Nelson’s right hand pulls up short and Lewis’ is deflected. Nelson steps forward slowly while Lewis backs away, leading to an uneventful couple of minutes at the top of the round. Two minutes in, Nelson digs an underhook and shoves Lewis against the wall. “Big Country” gets the takedown and passes to side control, then leans right to left across Lewis’ body to frame up a kimura. While Nelson looks for the submission, Lewis rolls free and powers back to his feet. The escape is short-lived, as Nelson pulls him right back to the canvas. Lewis gets up again, only to be taken down again, and now Nelson puts his weight on his opponent from cross-side control. Lewis is back up again with only seconds to go, and he finishes the round swinging.

Round 3
Nelson goes after an early takedown and succeeds in single-legging Lewis to the ground near the fence in the opening minute of the round. Lewis works slowly back to his feet but can’t escape the clutches of “Big Country,” who holds Lewis on the fence until he’s able to take him down again. Lewis gets up again, but Nelson stays stuck on him, throwing knees to the legs and body as they rest in a weary clinch. Referee McCarthy resets the fighters with just over a minute on the clock, and Lewis wastes no time in slugging Nelson with a right hand. Lewis follows with a kick to the body, closes in on Nelson near the fence and hits him with a pair of rights. Nelson wraps him up in a bodylock, but Lewis separates with 20 seconds left. Nelson gets caught flailing and eats a huge right hand, but it could be too little, too late for Lewis.

Gonzaga deflects a right high kick, backs up to the fence and then changes levels to try an early takedown on the “Black Beast.” Lewis stays standing for a few seconds but is soon tripped to the canvas by the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Lewis rolls to his knees and Gonzaga tries to jump on his back, but Lewis is able to scramble up and shake him off. Gonzaga tries to keep Lewis pinned against the cage; after 30 seconds of inactivity, however, referee Marc Goddard splits up the big men. Gonzaga waits for Lewis to throw, counters him with a left hand and clinches again with 80 seconds left in round one. Gonzaga is bleeding from his nose, the result of an early punch from Lewis, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting “Napao” so far. Lewis steps out to the center and then walks forward on Gonzaga with a straight right hand. The first punch only grazes the Brazilian, but a follow-up right rattles Gonzaga’s head and sends him slumping to the canvas, out cold. Lewis moves in to pounce, but this one is over and referee Goddard knows it. Derrick Lewis notches another impressive knockout inside the Octagon.

Grabowski blocks a high kick from Lewis, changes levels and drives forward for a fast double-leg takedown. Lewis sweeps almost as soon as they hit the ground and drops a couple right hands on Grabowski’s face while passing to the Pole’s half guard. Grabowski reclaims full guard and locks down both of Lewis’ wrists to prevent any further offense. Lewis stands, shucks Grabowski’s legs and comes crashing back to the ground with a huge right hand. The punch opens a deep cut on the left side of Grabowski’s head, staining the canvas with blood straight away. Lewis compresses Grabowski on the ground and tees up the head of the “Polish Pitbull” for some heavy right hands. Grabowski is fading fast, covering up as Lewis unloads with more strikes. Lewis stands up again and dives back to the ground with another massive right hand that splits the gloves of the already fetal Grabowski. This time, referee Mark Smith has seen enough, and Derrick Lewis has notched a quick and dominant stoppage victory.

The heavyweights spend 30 seconds circling and testing the range before Lewis shoots on Pesta’s legs and rushes him to the ground. Pesta gets right back to his feet and holds Lewis in a clinch on the fence before returning the favor with a trip takedown. Straight to side control goes Pesta, elbowing Lewis’ face from the left with the cage a foot away on Lewis’ right. Lewis is trying to wrap up from underneath, not trying to escape from the position as Pesta knees his ribs. Suddenly, Lewis rolls right and powers back to his feet, then tries to hurl Pesta to the ground with an underhook. Pesta easily reverses and trips the “Black Beast” back to the base of the fence. Lewis uses a kimura from underneath to work back to his feet, but Pesta is tenacious and won’t let him off the fence. Down to the final 90 seconds of the frame as Pesta hits his third trip takedown of the round. Lewis works back to his feet again, Pesta clinging to his waist. The Czech fighter takes a glance up at the clock as he wraps up Lewis and rides out the last half minute.

Round 2
The round begins slowly, like the first, but this time it’s Pesta who shoots for a takedown. Lewis fends it off for 30 seconds with his back to the fence until Pesta finds his second effort and succeeds in flooring the American. Lewis keeps his opponent in guard as they hit the mat, and both big men swing heavy, if ineffectual punches as they scoot around the cage. With no progress being made on the ground, referee Kerry Hatley brings the heavyweights back to their feet with half the round remaining. Lewis tries to blitz and instead has the momentum turned back on him for another Pesta takedown. Both men look tired but Pesta looks exhausted as he tries to hold Lewis on the ground. Lewis won’t be held down this time, and he breaks away from Pesta’s tired clinch on the feet soon after. Pesta eats a right hand from Lewis, grabs for his legs but can’t find the takedown. Lewis stuffs him to the mat and smashes Pesta’s face with hammerfists as the final 20 seconds tick down. Referee Hatley looks poised to intervene when Pesta is saved by the bell.

Lewis shuts down a takedown attempt and forces Pesta to the ground, then stands over the Czech fighter and tries to shuck his legs. Lewis steps into full mount and begins unloading with both fists, smashing through Pesta’s mitts with a few particularly brutal right hands. With Pesta simply covering up and not fighting back, referee Hatley steps in and stops the bout.

Jordan blocks a right high kick from Lewis but gets caught by the right hand behind it. “The Black Beast” moves in behind the punch and pushes Jordan’s back against the fence. Jordan reverses the position and trips Lewis to the ground at the base of the fence, where he grinds on Lewis’ face with elbows for a few seconds before the larger man powers back to his feet. Lewis clips Jordan with another right hand before both men walk off the fence, then Jordan gets out of the way as Lewis whips around with a pair of spinning kicks. Jordan waits a moment before ducking inside and hitting another takedown at the fence, now midway through the opening round. More short elbows ding up Lewis’ face, prompting him to roll onto his belly and stand again. This time, Jordan holds Lewis on the fence with double underhooks and tries to trip him back to the mat. Lewis pushes off with about one minute remaining and charges across the cage at Jordan, who plants and drops Lewis to the ground with a short right hook. Suddenly, it’s a firefight between the heavyweights, both men swinging wild punches, but it doesn’t last long as Lewis opts to drop for a takedown. Jordan comes away from the exchange with a cut beneath his left eye but still manages to trip Lewis to the ground and finish the frame dropping elbows from side control.

A knee from Lewis catches Potts on the cup, and after a brief break for the South African to recover, Potts gives the “Beast” a few kicks to the body. Potts misses with one kick and tries to run away, bouncing off the cage and tripping to the ground. Lewis makes the mistake of standing over Potts, who grabs for a kneebar -- which appears to make Lewis tap once -- and then changes to a heel hook which Lewis escapes. Potts winds up on top in the ensuing scramble, but Lewis rolls him over from half guard and easily escapes another heel hook attempt. A big right hand from Lewis lands to the face of the grounded Potts, who drives forward and finishes the round working for a double-leg on the fence.

Round 2
Lewis just misses with a left high kick, then touches Potts with a left hook. Potts tries to clinch up and gets tossed to the ground, where Lewis uses a whizzer to take top position. Potts gets to his knees, and Lewis loops his right arm around the South African’s waist while bombing with left hands. Potts rolls to guard and Lewis stands up, then dives down into the prone man’s guard. Potts tries to isolate Lewis’ left arm, but he can’t and he winds up with Lewis flattening him from half guard. After eating a couple heavy right hands, Potts rolls over and covers up, leaving himself open for an arm-triangle choke. Lewis briefly considers the submission, then gives it up in order to take full mount and drop hammer fists on Potts’ face. Lewis has two minutes left in the round, slamming Potts with punches and elbows from full mount. Referee John McCarthy tells Potts to fight back, and when he does not, the fight is stopped.

The big men have a bit of a feeling-out process in the opening minute, and then Lewis grabs double underhooks to put “Guto Inocente” on the fence. Referee Herb Dean quickly calls for action, so Lewis switches to a single-leg and works for the takedown. Inocente extracts his leg and circles out. Lewis catches a front kick and sends a right hook off Inocente’s glove, then pushes the Brazilian to the fence again. Lewis releases for a second to deck Inocente with a heavy right hook, then misses with an uppercut as they split. Inocente steps in to deliver an outside leg kick and gets tossed to the ground. Lewis leans low over Inocente, putting himself in danger of upkicks. The American dives on top of Inocente, missing a right hand as he does but coming down in good position to land more. Lewis pins down Inocente’s left arm, leaving his face exposed, and knocks the Brazilian unconscious with a pair of massive right hands. Inocente comes to just as referee Dean stops the fight, stands up and asks the official what happened.

John McCarthy is the referee for this heavyweight bout. May slaps at Lewis’ legs with a few kicks before “The Black Beast” bulldozes May across the cage to the ground near the fence. Lewis sits in half guard for a moment, but May sweeps out. The big men stand, and May wastes no time in tripping Lewis back to the mat. May steps right into full mount but doesn’t manage much offense from the position before Lewis rolls to his knees. May tries to jump on his back and slides off, leaving Lewis to slip out the back door and take top position. Lewis starts dropping thunderous left hands and elbows, and May goes belly-down while absorbing the punishment. Referee McCarthy steps in to halt the fight and indicates that May injured his knee.
