Andrew Sanchez vs. Bruno Silva

Round 1
In this middleweight preliminary headliner, “El Dirte” Sanchez (12-6, 5-4 UFC) will try to make it dirty against brutal Brazilian knockout artist Silva (20-6, 1-0 UFC). Many do not expect this fight will last long, and referee Keith Peterson will try to redeem himself from a few earlier missed infractions by tamping down the nonsense in the Apex. The gloves get touched, and Silva begins to stalk the American down right out of the gate. Sanchez turns the tables thanks to herky-jerky movement, bobbing his head down and faking to strike, but Silva quickly walks through this and unloads a brutal combination of punches to the body and head. A few body shots lead to an uppercut that snaps Sanchez’ head back, and Sanchez’ face is already marked up. Sanchez circles away to regain his composure, and Silva slings a body kick that lands with an audible pop. A big overhand right from Silva misses, allowing Sanchez to shoot in low for a single. Silva defends himself by linking his fingers illegally into the fence, but Sanchez rips his legs out and puts him on his back. Silva looks to his corner as Sanchez holds him pinned with his seat on the floor and back to the cage, before “El Dirte” makes it dirty by dragging Silva’s back to the mat. Sanchez in half guard tries to get some ground-and-pound off, and Silva scoots his back up to the fence so he can hope to wall-walk. Sanchez triangles his foe’s legs out beneath him with a move some call the “Dagestani handcuff” even though it existed long before Khabib Nurmagomedov competed inside the Octagon, and Silva appears frustrated as he starts talking to his corner. His corner gives him advice he apparently does not like, as he shakes his head, all while Sanchez puts him flat on the ground again so he can start unloading with ground-and-pound. Silva fights back with swinging elbows from his back, and he kicks off the chest to push Sanchez back. This momentary break allows Silva to burst back to his feet, and Sanchez runs ahead to stick to Silva like glue. Sanchez trips out the leg briefly, but “Blindado” is able to power back up although he cannot break the grip. A knee from Sanchez pounds into Silva’s cup with 20 seconds left in the ground, and Silva is none too pleased. Silva recovers after 35 seconds, and he runs out when they resume to throw a high kick. Sanchez counters him with a side kick that smashes Silva into the cup again, and Silva is hurt badly as he falls to the ground yelling and slamming his hand on the mat. Miraculously, he only needs 30 more seconds to get his bearings after that display of pain, and when the action resumes, he sprints with a right hand but the round ends before he can reach the target.

Round 2
Sanchez begins the round with a few reaching punches, and his jittery movement gives Silva pause from loading up on anything. When the Brazilian does this, swinging wildly and missing, Sanchez grabs hold of him and slams him down to the mat. Silva manages to work his way up, and “El Dirte” kicks out Silva’s foot repeatedly to return him to the ground. Sanchez hits a single, and Silva catches him with a right hand but still lands on the mat. The Brazilian springs into action, unloading with a furious barrage of elbows from his back that may have hurt Sanchez. “El Dirte” gathers his thoughts as Silva returns to his feet, and Silva grabs the fence to stop a subsequent takedown try. The fence grab is unsuccessful, as Sanchez twirls him around and puts him down again. Silva gets back up only to have his feet sucked out beneath him and returned to the mat. In half guard, Sanchez sits up to saw his elbow back and forth on the chin of his opponent. Silva squirms his way with his back to the wall, and he signals to Peterson to do something, but Sanchez is still working and advancing position. Through sheer force of will, Silva pops back up, and he is only upright for two seconds before Sanchez drops him right back down on his head. Once more, “Blindado” fights his way back up, and he tries to throw a big punch only to get bowled over. The American lands a single strike to force Silva to turn to his knees, but Silva once again able to stand. Sanchez unloads with a few punches before the round ends.

Round 3
The gloves get touched to begin the last round, and Silva throws caution to the wind as he walks the American down to try to unload on him. Silva lands to the head and body, and a fatiguing Sanchez with his back to the fence defends by using a front kick that collides with the cup. The third groin strike draws a point deduction for Sanchez, and Silva needs to catch his breath with another 30-second break. Silva is energized by this, and he blitzes his opponent with punches. Silva rips the body and goes to the head, and he has a knee crash straight into Sanchez’ chin. Silva continues to slam his fists into his gassing foe’s midsection, and he just misses with a big uppercut. Sanchez cannot deliver much in the way of offense on his own side, as Silva ignores the strikes and wrecks Sanchez’ body. A liver kick leads to a few punches, and Sanchez bounces off the wall from the blows but is still in the fight. Silva’s offense suddenly falls off a cliff as he might have used everything he had to stop the fight, and Sanchez clips him with a left hand. Sanchez backs Silva off with a few punches, but a switch suddenly flips in the head of the Brazilian, who charges. “El Dirte” defends himself and backs away into the fence, which allows Silva to stalk him down and blast him with vicious punches to the head and body.
The body shots open up ones to the head, and Silva strings a 10-piece combination together as Sanchez bends over, barely on his feet and taking huge damage. This lengthy barrage of unanswered blows is enough for Peterson to call a stop to the fight, awarding Silva the huge comeback win after likely losing both of the first two rounds.
After his victory, Silva is awarded his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and he celebrates with his team.

Bruno Silva

Angelo is very confident in Bruno Silva, citing his insane power on the feet and ground, and his ability to finish. He notes Sanchez has a suspect chin and is well-rounded but not great at anything. Silva's takedown defense and grappling are good enough to survive. Angelo likes the moneyline at -135 and plans to bet it. He also likes Silva in DraftKings at 8300 and the less less on monkey knife fight.

Big Brady picks Bruno Silva by knockout, citing Silva's power and improved takedown defense. He notes Sanchez is hittable, has been knocked out four times, and may gas if he wrestles. Silva's 85% finish rate and Sanchez's poor striking defense make this a favorable matchup for Silva.

Bruno Silva

Daniel is high on Bruno Silva, a former M-1 champion with devastating power. He notes Silva has addressed past grappling issues by reversing position and knocking out a black belt from his guard. He expects Silva to find Sanchez's chin eventually and knock him out, even if Sanchez gets a takedown or two.

Sanchez is a superior wrestler with good boxing and distance control. Silva has poor takedown defense and relies on KO power, but Sanchez can grind him out for 15 minutes. Sanchez by decision is the most likely outcome, though Silva's power is a threat.

Big Brady picks Makhmud Muradov, citing his striking advantage and Sanchez's poor striking defense (50%). He notes Muradov's 100% takedown defense (small sample) and Sanchez's cardio issues. He predicts Muradov wins by knockout, as Sanchez has been knocked out three times. He likes the line at -135 but hasn't bet yet.

Makhmud Muradov

Daniel Levi picks Makhmud Muradov, praising his boxing, footwork, and takedown defense. He notes Muradov's 13-fight win streak and ability to find openings, especially to the body. Levi respects Sanchez's improvements but believes Muradov's striking difference is too big, predicting a knockout or decision win.

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Jan 22, 2021 (2 days before fight)
Makhmud Muradov

Muradov is more technical on the feet, has good counter striking, and has solid takedown defense with underhooks. Sanchez showed improved striking in his last fight, but that was only one fight and against a lower-level opponent. Sanchez has cardio issues and may gas if he can't get an early finish. Muradov is experienced and should be able to pick Sanchez apart over 15 minutes. I like Muradov at -135, as the market may be skewed by Sanchez's flashy win.

Makhmud Muradov

The MMA Guru picks Makhmud Muradov to win by unanimous decision, citing his reach, size, youth, and volume striking. He notes that Andrew Sanchez struggles against higher-level strikers and has been KO'd before. He expects Muradov to outland Sanchez for three rounds, similar to how Marvin Vettori overwhelmed Sanchez with volume. He does not see a finish but thinks Muradov will control the fight on the feet.

Wellington Turman

Daniel Levi leans with Wellington Turman, but acknowledges it could go either way. He notes that Turman is young, hungry, and has shown improvement, while Sanchez has questions about his chin and cardio. Andrew Sanchez

Sanchez's wrestling should be able to take Turman down and control him, as Turman's takedown defense is not as strong as Marvin Vettori's. Sanchez showed improved cardio in his last fight, but his past cardio issues are a concern. He should avoid submissions from Turman and grind out a decision, though the third round could be dangerous if he gasses.

Jared Gooden

Big Brady leans toward Jared Gooden as a dog, noting he doesn't think Wellington Turman should be such a big favorite. He favors Gooden's striking and power, and thinks Gooden's takedown defense is solid enough to stuff Turman's wrestling. He expects a close fight but picks Gooden by decision, though he's not confident enough to bet on it.

"I kind of lean the dog side there just because I don't feel like Wellington Turman should really be this big of a favorite against anybody"

Wellington Turman

Turman is a BJJ black belt with improving striking, and he should be able to take Gooden down and dominate on the ground. Gooden is a power striker with a developing ground game, but he has shown weakness when taken down and has weight-cutting issues. Turman is expected to be competitive on the feet before changing levels and securing a submission victory.

Angelo is confident in Randy Brown, citing his length, power, takedown defense, and BJJ. He expects Brown to stay on the outside and jab, avoiding a ground game. Connor Ruebusch Expert Confident picked Jun 22, 2023 (2 days before fight)
Randy Brown

Connor believes Randy Brown should win this fight easily. He notes that Brown has limitations like poor kick defense and a tendency to throw one shot from range that puts him out of position, but Turman's game is entirely based on dogged toughness and cage wrestling. Turman's takedowns come from the cage, not open space, and Brown is a great clinch fighter and hard to take down against the cage. Connor also points out that Turman is dropping down a division and has a six-inch reach disadvantage, making Brown feel fast. He thinks there's a lot of room for error for Brown, meaning a lot of room for fun.

Angelo believes Petroski has superior wrestling and solid BJJ, and expects him to get takedowns and avoid submissions. He notes that Turman is training with Glover and Pajeda, which is a positive, but still picks Petroski. Big Brady picks Wellington Turman to win by third-round submission, pulling off an upset. He is not sold on Andre Petroski, citing his poor cardio and weak competition (Yizong, Michael Gilmore, Nick Maximov). He notes Turman is a legit BJJ black belt with 85% takedown defense, and that Petroski tired and got submitted by Brian Battle. He believes Turman will survive early pressure and get a late finish as Petroski fades.

He thinks Turman is a better striker and has good grappling off his back, and that if Petroski gasses, Turman can take over. Cody also mentions that Turman trains with Glover Teixeira and Alex Pereira, which should have him in good shape. He sees value in the underdog price.

Connor picks Turman, reasoning that Petroski's high-energy, submission-hunting style leads to gassing, and Turman has never been submitted despite looking panicked. He notes that Turman has survived against dangerous grapplers and has more left in the tank after the first round. Connor acknowledges that Petroski will likely win the first round but expects Turman to take over as the fight goes on.

"I think I'm going to pick Wellington Terman and she's just going to survive around a really devastating round and then he'll have more left in the tank."

Andre Petroski

Daniel Levi picks Andre Petroski, citing his wrestling background, grappling credentials (submitted Eric Anders in a tournament), and high-volume pressure. He notes that Turman has shown weaknesses in getting his back taken and losing rounds late (e.g., Sam Alvey fight). Levi believes Petroski will win the first two rounds or get a finish, though he acknowledges Petroski's tendency to gas. He sees Turman as a step up in competition but thinks Petroski's grappling will be too much.

The host sees Petroski as the slightly better Jiu-Jitsu player with a strength advantage, but the line at -200 is too wide for him to bet. He considers the under 2.5 rounds but worries both grapplers could neutralize each other, leading to a decision. He predicts Petroski by submission in round 2 but with low conviction.

Paul thinks Turman can match Petroski on the ground and has more technical striking. He sees it as a clear dog-or-pass situation and takes Turman.

Zane points out that Turman has a history of surviving and finding ways to win, even if it's ugly. He also mentions that Petroski's path to victory is narrow, relying on an early finish.

"I'll take Terman to, to, to have his worst fears realized and just sort of accidentally find himself in a winning position."

Wellington Turman vs. Bruno Silva

Round 1
The overused adage of “classic striker vs. grappler” matchup rings true for this middleweight contest, as Turman (16-4, 1-2 UFC) welcomes former M-1 champ Silva (19-6, 0-0 UFC) to the Octagon. Not to be confused with Bruno “Bulldog” Silva who competes in the UFC at flyweight, this Brazilian goes by “Blindado” and he sports a knockout rate of 84 percent. The touch of gloves comes before referee Chris Tognoni, and the fight is underway. The two tentatively strike out of the gate, but Turman is much more interesting in grappling as he hunts for a takedown. Silva defends with a clear fence grab, and then another, leading Tognoni to call him on it. Turman kicks off the fence, lifts the newcomer in the air and slams him down. Silva springs back up and turns the tide, even taking Turman’s back standing up. Turman defends this with a fence grab, and he utilizes a kimura to toss Silva down for a moment. When “Blindado” gets back up, Turman lifts him up and slams him down, nearly on his head. Silva is already back to a knee, and Turman looks to take his back. Once more, Turman kicks from the cage to put Silva down, and Silva pops back up. Turman hops on to serve as a backpack, where Silva is standing up leaning on the fence and Turman is fishing for a submission. The fence grab clearly the most significant tool of the evening, Silva gets away with two more when he tries to turn around and break the grip of Turman. The grappler looks to cinch up an armbar when he slides off, as Silva shimmies him off by getting out the back door. Silva climbs into his foe’s full guard, and he starts smashing his fists into Turman’s face with ferocious ground-and-pound. Turman’s head bounces off the canvas several times, but Turman keeps the wherewithal to pull for an armbar. When Silva escapes this, Turman lands an illegal upkick right on Silva’s chin. Silva ignores it and continues his assault of ground punches.
In full guard, “Blindado” blinds Turman with a barrage of punches, and as they mount, Turman goes out cold. Tognoni sees Turman’s eyes roll back and he is able to stop the fight right in time, as Silva’s left hands from on top were lethal weapons.
That is 17 knockouts in 20 wins for Silva, who announces his presence in a big way to the UFC two years after intended – Silva tested positive for boldenone before making his debut, delaying him until now. Either way, this is a statement win by recording a clean knockout from the guard position.
