Adrian Yañez

Angelo picks Adrian Yañez because he is faster, cleaner, more technical, and younger. He notes that Cody Garbrandt is not the same fighter as 10 years ago, with seven losses in the last decade and a chinny style. He believes Yañez's takedown defense (75%) should be enough to handle Garbrandt's wrestling, and that Yañez should win by decision. He also likes the plus 200 odds on Yañez by decision.

Adrian Yañez by decision at +200
"This should absolutely be an Adrien Yanz win because he is such a good striker. My only concern here is actually the wrestling."

Adrian Yañez

Big Brady is confident Yañez wins by KO, calling it a fine parlay piece. He notes Garbrandt has no chin, doesn't throw anything, and almost lost his last fight. He thinks Yañez at -250 was a phenomenal bet, but at -410 it's wide. He expects the KO prop to be juiced and the under to be scary because Cody might try not to get hit.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Long Xiao
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Xiao (-148), Garbrandt (+124)

Round 1
The preliminary headliner will conclude the de facto “Cody against the world” series, with gentlemen named Cody sporting a record of 0-2 so far today. Garbrandt (14-7, 9-7 UFC) would like to turn things around for his namesake when he faces the well-traveled Xiao (27-10, 1-2 UFC). Fists and feet are sure to fly in this bantamweight encounter, and they do just as soon as referee Herb Dean clocks them in.
The fighters do not touch gloves, as Garbrandt is loaded for bear and promptly puts three fists on Xiao’s face. Garbrandt backs off to circle around, and he works the lead leg with a kick but is booted with a shin to his chin. Garbrandt retreats in a hurry, and Xiao largely lets him off the hook with little more than a low kick. Garbrandt crashes the pocket, and he is met with a knee to the body, and when he takes a step back, he gets kicked in the stomach. Xiao swats out with kicks from both sides, following the former champ around without anything coming back at him. The Chinese fighter side kicks the body, and Garbrandt locks him up in a clinch when Xiao gets in close. Garbrandt thumps the body when tied up, and he lashes out with a ferocious elbow that drops Xiao.
Xiao pops back up and hoots, with the strike apparently a flash knockdown as he gets back in Garbrandt’s grill to chase him around. Garbrandt spins with an elbow that tags Xiao in the forehead, and Xiao raises his arms as if to ask for more. Xiao takes a step back and slips, his balance possibly not fully back with him, but he proceeds to stalk down the former bantamweight king and work his lead leg. Xiao motions to Garbrandt to trade when he gets struck, and he thumps Garbrandt in the face with another head kick. Xiao loads up with a hard inside leg kick that makes Garbrandt switch stances, goofing around and swinging his hands around while they are well out of range. Xiao peppers the front leg and charges in, but Garbrandt greets him with a double and tackles him to his seat. Xiao springs right back up, and Garbrandt tries to kick him in the head but is too close to get it off. Xiao responds with a step-in elbow, and he fires off a body kick and resets to attack with a wheel kick that misses. Garbrandt strings together three punches, but only one partially lands. The horn sounds.

Round 2
Xiao comes out of his corner with a strategy: attack Garbrandt’s lead leg. Garbrandt lines up a few punches and offers out a takedown, and Xiao sprawls and the two reset. Garbrandt digs a right hand to the ribcage and goes upstairs, causing a thin trickle of blood to drip from the Chinese fighter’s nostril. Xiao goes high with a kick, and he stays busy with offense to any target he can find. He just misses a step-in elbow when Garbrandt crashes the pocket, and Garbrandt wings a right hand that misses the mark. Xiao thumps the body with his shin, and he kicks the front leg to force a stance switch. Xiao kicks his foe’s leg out from beneath him when Garbrandt is about to engage, and Garbrandt gingerly stands back up and immediately absorbs one or two more for his effort.
Garbrandt crowds his opponent to pursue a level change, and Xiao breaks and blocks a spinning back fist on the break. Garbrandt shoots for a single, and Xiao scrambles out of the way and responds with a low kick. The 27-year-old nearly bashes Garbrandt with another head kick, but it is his calf kick that is hampering the former champ in a major way. Xiao chambers and fires a high kick, and he pushes off the stomach with a side kick and narrowly misses one up high. Garbrandt signals that he missed by this much, and then takes a right hand on the chin. The two crash together, with Garbrandt attempting a takedown and headbutting his opponent, and Xiao tumbles to his seat. Dean calls time, and Xiao wants to get back to it and high-fives Garbrandt and is alright. The tepid round comes to a close.

Sherdog Scores

Dayne Fox scores the round: 10-9 Xiao

Round 3
Xiao reintroduces himself by offering up a steady diet of kicks to all targets. His body kicks lead to low kicks, and one bumps into Garbrandt’s cup when Garbrandt is ducking down for a takedown. Dean sees it and calls time, and the former champ takes about 50 seconds before he is all good. Xiao immediately pushes the pace once more, going after Garbrandt and dodging a wheel kick. Xiao rushes after him and boots Garbrandt square in the groin, who topples to the mat and dislodges his mouthguard in serious pain. Dean again calls time, and Garbrandt starts dry heaving. The dry heaving turns to actual vomiting in a bucket, which should mean the fight should be over. Somehow, the fight is not actually stopped, even though the rules clearly indicate that a fighter who vomits during a fight “shall be stopped by the referee and the fighter shall lose the contest by a technical knockout due to medical stoppage”—quoting the Unified Rules directly. No one has a clue what the rules of MMA are anymore, and Dean deducts one point from Xiao but restarts the match. Garbrandt gets back to his feet and goes ballistic a la James Thompson against Aleks Emelianenko, screaming at Xiao and preparing to assault him violently. Garbrandt comes out swinging for the fences, and they crash together and end up in a clinch. Remarkably, Xiao knees Garbrandt in the groin again, and Dean stops the fight and takes another point from Xiao, while threatening that there will be a DQ with one more. When they resume, Xiao leaps forward with a flying knee, and Garbrandt motions that he missed by a mile. Xiao points to the ground, and Garbrandt does not bite and engage foolishly.
Xiao chases after the former champ, and he walks directly into a right hand. Garbrandt retreats rather than engaging, possibly still compromised from the multiple fouls, while Xiao wings kicks at him. Garbrandt keeps moving, landing a body shot and one to the head. Xiao runs at Garbrandt and kicks him in the head, and when Garbrandt drops down, Xiao knees him in the head potentially illegally. Garbrandt stands back up and knees him back, but it is almost exclusively Xiao who is attacking. Xiao sprints forward and clinches up, where he hits a trip takedown and lands in full mount. He hits the floor with one second left, and lands at least one punch after the bell. When time mercifully expires, Garbrandt has to shove his opponent off of him, and there is very nearly a brawl in the cage but for Dean getting between them. They proceed to bury the hatchet after one of the worst fights in UFC history, and it just so happens to be the second fight that many new MMA fans will be seeing on the CBS airwaves. Talk about a disaster.

Cody Garbrandt

Angelo picks Cody Garbrandt to win based on his striking and footwork, but strongly advises against betting on him, calling it a ridiculous thing to do in 2026. He notes Cody's age and recent loss to an older fighter, and says he would never put money on Cody. He separates pick from bet.

He believes Garbrandt is washed and can't take a shot, but Long Xiao lacks KO power and has poor takedown ability. Garbrandt still has elite takedown defense and anti-grappling. Brady expects a boring fight where Garbrandt uses movement and clinching to win a decision, similar to his fight against Trevin Jones. He warns fans will boo.

Cody Garbrandt

Connor believes Garbrandt should win easily based on speed and the level of competition. He notes that Long Zhao has struggled against low-level bantamweights and that Garbrandt, despite his psychological and technical flaws, has a massive advantage in athleticism. He is shocked that Garbrandt is an underdog and thinks the line is inaccurate.

Surprised by the odds; Garbrandt at +135 is a value pick.

Xiao Long

The host acknowledges Garbrandt is technically superior on the feet but is on a steep decline, with poor durability and gun-shy tendencies. He compares Garbrandt to other declining fighters like Moreno and Cyborg. Xiao Long is a high-volume, tough striker who throws double the strikes per minute. The host would back Long if forced to bet, but personally passes due to Long being average and the possibility of Garbrandt outclassing him.

"I would rather back Long in a fight like that. I'm not going to be betting Long personally."

He notes Garbrandt's speed advantage and better boxing, and expects him to win round one. However, he acknowledges Garbrandt's poor chin and cardio, but thinks he can survive if he builds an early lead. James sees the fight as close to 50/50, making Garbrandt the value side at plus odds.

Surprised by the odds; Garbrandt at +135 is a value pick.

Raoni Barcelos vs. Cody Garbrandt
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Barcelos (-180), Garbrandt (+150)

Round 1
Of the three Codys competing tonight, Garbrandt (14-6, 9-6 UFC) is the last one to try to get on the board for his namesake. The former champ, who celebrates about 80% of his wins by knockout, takes on a man five years his elder but no less dangerous than ever in Barcelos (19-5, 8-4 UFC). Most notably, the Brazilian derailed the hype train of Payton Talbott in January, firmly ruling out that he was washed up and ready to get tucked into bed. Referee Mike Beltran draws the assignment to watch over the bantamweights, watching them bump fists together to start the match. Garbrandt starts fast, rushing forward with four punches and a head kick. Barcelos bounces off the fence, and Garbrandt surges towards him with a trio of flying fists. Another combo comes from the former champ, and Barcelos ducks it and tries to take him down. Garbrandt hops away and resets, already wary of the possible takedown in play. Garbrandt measures with a single body kick, and he rails Barcelos with three speedy punches. Barcelos drops to a knee, and Garbrandt points at him. As Barcelos stands, he goes after a takedown. Garbrandt ducks away from it, dodges an overhand right and falls to 50/50 when Barcelos looks for a takedown. When the takedown does not materialize, Barcelos leaps at him and splits open Garbrandt’s eyebrow with his knee. Garbrandt backs away, avoiding a flying switch kick as chants for “Let’s go, Cody” echo in the building. Barcelos lands first after they stop calling for the former champ, working the body with a left. Barcelos has a head kick slap off the raised guard, and he rolls with a right hand over the top. Garbrandt swings and misses with a pair of punches, and his second effort to the body gets in. “No Love” shows Barcelos no love by tossing him out of the way, although the Brazilian recovers and fires off an uppercut that gets through. Garbrandt knees up the middle and tags Barcelos with two fast punches, and Barcelos gets his attention with a strong overhand right. Garbrandt thinks about showboating or dancing but evaluates that the strike did some damage and plays it cool. Barcelos attacks a single, and Garbrandt pops out of it and partially checks a calf kick flying at him. Garbrandt has three or four punches land, and he does a little dance. Barcelos takes him down, and Garbrandt gets away with an illegal upkick while scrambling. Barcelos climbs into top position, lands a few hammerfists, and the horn sounds.

Round 2
The fighters high-five before getting after it, and Barcelos is quick to engage his wrestling. Garbrandt’s overhand right goes wide, and he plants his feet to defend the takedown effort. Another try also comes up short, and Garbrandt pushes off and loads up on quick punches. Barcelos chases Garbrandt around the outer edge of the cage, chambering and firing a right hand but missing with the follow-up. Barcelos chops down the front leg, and he ducks down and eats a right hand while looking for a single. When the takedown is not successful, Barcelos clips him with two right hands. Garbrandt defends a double, but a knee up the middle from the Brazilian tags him cleanly. Garbrandt puts out two punches that further develop some swelling on Barcelos’ right cheek, but Barcelos ignores it and shoots for a single. Garbrandt stuffs it, turns his man to the side and elbows him cleanly for it. Barcelos keeps the pressure up, walking through a low kick and a body shot to catch “No Love” with his overhand right. Barcelos times a crisp uppercut and drops down for a single, lifting Garbrandt’s leg way up in the air. Garbrandt still stays upright, takes a right hand and puts his leg down. Barcelos connects with another big right, and he reaches out with one to the midsection. Barcelos jabs his way forward, scooting back to avoid all but a left hand in a combination. Garbrandt rolls with a right hand on the way out, but the jab from the Brazilian is finding its home repeatedly. Barcelos loads up on a right hand and ducks down, before unleashing another right hand that nearly puts the champ down. The round ends with Garbrandt shooting for a desperation takedown.

Round 3
There is a final glove touch, and Barcelos gets right back to pressuring. Garbrandt keeps him at bay for less than a second with a body kick, as Barcelos walks him down behind his overhand right. Garbrandt shoots for a single, and Barcelos laughs it off. A second takedown from Garbrandt is nowhere near being successful, and Barcelos pays him back with a calf kick that turns Garbrandt’s knee. Garbrandt gives him back two low kicks to think about, and he absorbs a flush right hand when circling away. Barcelos kicks at his front leg again, setting up his jab and right hand. Garbrandt rushes forward but is out of range for his combo, and he gets sat down with a leg kick. The former champ shoots for a takedown and finds his way into a guillotine choke setup, but he breaks out of is as he leans against Barcelos. The Brazilian breaks free, and Garbrandt connects at the end of a right and a left. Barcelos clubs him with a one-two that forces the striker to shoot in on his hips, and he holds Garbrandt down and circles around to the side in hopes of taking the back. Barcelos manages to take the back after softening Garbrandt up, and he sneaks a hook in. “No Love” lands some no-look punches, but Barcelos is singularly focused on shutting down any hopes of escape. Garbrandt pushes his feet on the wall to turn himself around, where he drops down two punches before Barcelos explodes. The two fighters burst back to their feet and start slugging it out, with Garbrandt landing flush and Barcelos doing the same. Garbrandt waves him on, and Barcelos instead backs off. Garbrandt scores a right hand and is chucked out of the way like a child’s plaything when attempting a single. Garbrandt points to the ground to initiate a brawl, but Barcelos goes the opposite direction and evades him until the fight wraps. Barring something unexpected, all three Codys struck out tonight.

Cody Garbrandt

Big Brady picks Cody Garbrandt by second-round knockout. He believes Garbrandt's takedown defense is elite (80%) and that he can keep the fight standing. He notes Barcelos is 38 with a questionable chin, and Garbrandt has the power to knock him out. He acknowledges multiple outcomes but leans toward a knockout.

second round knockout
"Cody Garbrandt stuffs the takedowns, keeps it on the feet, lands a big shot, and knocks out the 38-year-old Hani Barcelos in the second round."

Connor Ruebusch Expert Confident picked Jun 12, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Raoni Barcelos

Connor picks Barcelos, emphasizing that Garbrandt's wrestling has declined and that Barcelos's chain wrestling and takedown variety will be a major threat. He notes that Garbrandt's tunnel vision when he feels confident often leads to him getting taken down, as seen against Figueiredo. Connor also points out that Barcelos is 38 and chinny, so Garbrandt could still knock him out, but Barcelos's wrestling should be the deciding factor.

Garbrandt opened at +117, now +159; Barcelos opened at -153, now -183. Connor agrees the line should not be too wide.
"I'm picking barcellos but i like the fight this is a good this is a good use of both men"

Cody Garbrandt

Despite public love for Barcelos after his upset win, Garbrandt has good takedown defense and superior striking. He will chip away at Barcelos and win a decision.

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked Jun 13, 2025 (1 day before fight)
Raoni Barcelos

The Guru picks Raoni Barcelos, stating he is 'done with Cody Garbrandt.' He criticizes Garbrandt's fundamental flaws in striking and grappling, such as giving up his back and poor low kicks. He notes Barcelos has faced tough competition and fraud-checked Payton Talbott. He expects Barcelos to win by decision or TKO in the second round.

"I'm just going to go with Hani Barcelos. I think I think I'm done with Cody to be honest. ... I can't pick Garbrandt to win a fight in 2025."

Zane Simon Expert Confident picked Jun 12, 2025 (2 days before fight)
Raoni Barcelos

Zane picks Barcelos, citing his deep wrestling game and ability to chain takedowns, which should be effective against Garbrandt's shaky takedown defense. He notes that Garbrandt has been taken down easily by lesser wrestlers and that Barcelos's wrestling has improved with age. However, Zane acknowledges that Barcelos's striking has become a liability and that Garbrandt still has one-punch power, making this a dangerous fight for both.

Garbrandt opened at +117, now +159; Barcelos opened at -153, now -183. Zane says if Garbrandt becomes a much bigger underdog, he might become a bet.
"I have to pick barcellos but like these guys are at a point in their career where they are asking each other the right questions"

Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Cody Garbrandt
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Figueiredo (-310), Garbrandt (+250)

Round 1
Tonight’s the night. And it’s going to happen again and again. Has to happen. Nice night. Las Vegas is a great town. I love the international food, bahn mi sandwiches, my favorite. But we’re hungry for something different now. Violence. It’s coming by the bucketful, and it starts with bantamweights that will almost certainly stand and bang. Former flyweight kingpin Figueiredo (22-3-1, 11-3-1 UFC) is putting some momentum together to make a run at his new weight class, while Garbrandt (14-5, 9-5 UFC) wishes to hold the line and prove he is not washed up at the tender age of 32. Fists are sure to fly, but before they do, referee Mark Smith checks them in. There is no touch of gloves, and it go time. Garbrandt introduces himself with a chopping calf kick, and he fires off another without concern. Garbrandt aims another on the inside, and then drops down on his knee to throw a sweeping kick out of the Mortal Kombat playbook. Figueiredo reaches out with a right hand that comes up short, and Garbrandt continues to work the lead leg. Figueiredo responds with one that he turns his hips into, and both men clash together and swing hard, while banging heads. Figueiredo backs off and gathers his thoughts, and he checks a kick coming at him. Figueiredo ducks an oncoming salvo and brings up a knee to the body, and he intercepts Garbrandt tossing a cartwheel kick by kicking Garbrandt in the face. The former bantamweight champ gets back up without issue, and he marches down “Daico.” Figueiredo lunges forward with an inaccurate swarm of punches, and Garbrandt hops in and out deliver a low kick. Garbrandt prods out with another calf kick, and he keeps his guard up to swat away a front kick aimed at his chin. Garbrandt leaps forward and catches the Brazilian with a left hand, and Figueiredo pulls guard and looks for a leglock. Garbrandt backs off before he is vulnerable, and he resets and dings a standing Figueiredo with a sharp one-two. Figueiredo meanders forward and lets go with a right hand, but it is one-and-done. Figueiredo does not quite reach with a front kick, but he elects to take the fight down and lifts Garbrandt’s leg up to drive him to the mat. Garbrandt jumps back up without taking any additional fire, and he lands a low kick before the bell.

Round 2
The fighters get back to business, and Garbrandt reaches out first with a high body kick. Figueiredo rushes forward swinging leather, and Garbrandt answers him with a clubbing left hand. Figueiredo pursues a takedown from behind, where he strips the former bantamweight champ from his balance and lowers him down to the mat. Figueiredo shifts over to move into half guard, where he presses down for a potential arm-triangle choke. Garbrandt turns, and Figueiredo takes his back and flattens him out. Figueiredo wriggles his arm out and hammers Garbrandt in the side of the head with a right hand. When Garbrandt turns back over, Figueiredo assumes full mount and sets up an arm-triangle choke. “Deus da Guerra” jumps over to the side and locks down the arm-triangle choke, and he squeezes with all his might. Garbrandt struggles and keeps his wits about him, while Figueiredo lowers his chest down to complete the maneuver. Figueiredo sits up just slightly and punches him in the side of the head, and he gets back to mount. Garbrandt tries to kick off and explode back to his feet, but the Brazilian mightily shoves him flat on his back. Figueiredo drops down shoulder strikes to the jaw, and he smacks Garbrandt in the side of the head with his fists when he finds openings. Garbrandt bursts back to his feet, and Figueiredo follows him every step of the way to lock down back control, set up a body triangle and start fishing for a choke.
Figueiredo cinches up a rear-naked choke, and at this point it is just academic. “No Love” considers going out on his shield, but at the last minute, he taps out, and we have our first finish of the evening.
This marks the first time that Garbrandt has ever been submitted.

He notes Figueiredo's power may not carry up to bantamweight and that Garbrandt's chin is a concern but his wrestling history and boxing should prevail. Figueiredo is a big bantamweight with power in both hands and solid takedown defense. Cody points out that Garbrandt fights emotionally and tends to run into fire when hit. He expects Figueiredo to knock Garbrandt out, possibly in the first round. Cody calls this his favorite bet on the card.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Brian Kelleher
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Garbrandt (-198), Kelleher (+164)

Round 1
Former champ Garbrandt (13-5, 8-5 UFC) is searching for his first two-win year since 2016, as he picked up a victory in March over Trevin Jones. Standing in his way will be the returning Kelleher (24-14, 8-7 UFC), who has been away from the Octagon for nearly 18 months and has grown himself a sweet skullet. The bantamweights with plenty of ways to finish fights will receive oversight by referee Marc Goddard, who starts the clock as the fighters tap gloves. Kelleher advances, sticking out his jab to find his range. Garbrandt does the same, and he suddenly lashes out with three punches and catches Kelleher on the chin. Garbrandt rushes forward throwing hands, and he dings Kelleher on the temple. Kelleher responds with two powerful calf kicks, and misses a front kick on the nose by a whisker. Kelleher connects with another calf kick, forcing Garbrandt to spin all the way around to recover. The punches from Garbrandt have opened a cut on the top of Kelleher’s head, but he pays it no mind. Garbrandt rushes in with three punches, and Kelleher pecks at him with a calf kick that forces the former champ to stumble on his way in. Kelleher pushes out a front kick, and shoots in for a double-leg takedown that jams Garbrandt against the wall. Garbrandt defends the first try and knees his foe in the sternum, and Kelleher drops down for a second effort but bails on it when Garbrandt pushes off. Garbrandt blitzes with a punch combo, and Kelleher takes a few on the chin and is more interested in chopping down the lead leg of his opponent. Garbrandt absorbs another leg kick or two before closing the distance, and he pursues his own possible level change or just ties him up to slow down the kick assault. Garbrandt lands an elbow on the break, and he evades a low kick that whizzes past him. Garbrandt digs several punches to the body and goes to the head, and Kelleher tries to escape but gets his bell rung by the former champ.
Garbrandt gives chase, and he belts Kelleher in the jaw with a right hand that cinematically sprays blood out of his mouth. Kelleher recovers slightly, sitting down on a front kick. Garbrandt drives home a right hand that smashes “Boom” right on the chin and sends him crashing down in a heap.
Watching Kelleher fall on his face, Garbrandt does not bother trying to seal the deal and instead limps away as Goddard waves the fight off. Serious swelling has developed on the shin of "No Love," which may not have been able to take much more punishment had the fight continued.

The only concern is Kelleher returning from neck surgery, but he thinks even 70% of Kelleher is enough to pull the upset.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Trevin Jones
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Garbrandt (-165), Jones (+140)

Round 1
The prelims wrap up with a must-win bantamweight contest for both competitors. While former champ Garbrandt (12-5, 7-5 UFC) has dropped five of his last six, Guam’s Jones (13-9, 1 NC; 1-3, 1 NC UFC) is aiming to snap a three-fight skid of his own. Someone will get their hand raised in the next 15 minutes or less, and referee Jason Herzog will be the first to know. The 135ers opt to not bump fists, and instead Garbrandt walks his man down and unleashes a kick to the ribcage. Jones grimaces and takes a second one on the same spot, and he tries to give one back with far less impact on it. Garbrandt hits the deck and sweeps the leg in a Mortal Kombat-esque move, and Jones looks at him quizzically as Garbrandt stands back up. Garbrandt loads up on another powerful body kick, landing with a thud that echoes in the filling arena. Jones again tries to reply in kind, and it partially lands. The former champion dodges a low kick as the pace slow down, and he looses another body kick with emphasis. A high body kick from Jones bounces off the guard, and Garbrandt intercepts a low kick to fire two punches over the top. Garbrandt sits down on a right hand, and Jones takes it on the chin and is forced to eat another shortly thereafter. Garbrandt moves constantly and circles when Jones tries to back him to thew all, and he starts showboating and dancing around with fancy stance switches. Jones continues plodding after him, and he swings a body kick that grazes the target. Garbrandt steps in with a straight right to the body, and he hops back and blocks a front kick. Garbrandt leans in with a punch to the midsection, and he blocks a half-hearted high kick. Garbrandt kicks the sternum and has a right hand over the top bounce off Jones’ hands. Garbrandt stays on the outside, chipping with a low kick, and he misses with a windmilling right hand but does land a body kick on the way out. Garbrandt again dances with his stance switches, and Jones chases him around the cage but cannot catch him before the horn sounds.

Round 2
Jones marches out of his corner to chase Garbrandt around early, and Garbrandt moves and winds up with a body kick. As Jones attempts to respond, Garbrandt crashes forward and scoops Jones off the ground with a double and slams him to the floor. Garbrandt does not choose to keep him down, and he instead backs off and stands back up. Jones tries to make him pay with a reaching right hand, but Garbrandt is well out of harm’s way. Jones scores a leg kick on the inside, and he fires a similar kick to the same spot. Garbrandt intercepts an advancing Jones and lifts him off the ground to smash him to the mat once more, and Jones snatches up a guillotine choke before landing. Garbrandt wrenches his neck out and resides in Jones’ guard, and Jones holds him fight to prevent much of the offense coming at him. Jones keeps nullifying Garbrandt, and Garbrandt circles around to let Jones stand so that he can circle around and take Jones’ back. Jones grabs the fence to try to stand, and Garbrandt puts a hook in around the side and threatens with an arm around the face. There is no joke there, so the former champ pushes off and knees his man in the face. Jones returns to ineffectively chasing Garbrandt around the cage, not cutting Garbrandt off and instead crashing forward for a potential single-leg entry. Garbrandt stops this in his tracks with his back against the wall, and he fights off a trip and turns Jones around. They jockey for position until the horn blares.

Round 3
The bantamweights reach the third round, and Jones swipes out with a right hand that misses the mark. Garbrandt catches Jones with a right hand on the way in, but Jones shakes it off and fires off a head kick. Garbrandt ducks it as the kick skims off his hair, and he sits back waiting to counter. Jones kicks the calf once, and the crowd voices its extreme displeasure for their inaction. Garbrandt jabs to the body as he strafes laterally, and he gets slapped in the face with Jones’ foot. Jones swipes out with another high kick, and Garbrandt’s own pace has dropped off a cliff. The former champ jumps back and forth but does little else until belting the Guam native with a resounding body kick. Jones tries to snatch it up, but Garbrandt pulls his leg out and continues to circle. Jones chase after him and has a head kick blocked, and he swings mightily with two hooks that are well off the mark. Garbrandt gets off one right hand, and he jumps in the air and pulls back on a possible flying knee with Jones a few feet away. Jones blitzes and misses with an overhand right, and Garbrandt gets caught with a left and hurt with a right. Garbrandt blinks it out and backs off, and Jones follows him around and snipes him with a left hand down the middle. Garbrandt grabs hold of him in the clinch, and Jones turns the corner and hits a trip with a body lock to plant the former champ on his back. Jones land in half guard with 40 seconds left in the fight, and he stands back up to lean on the fence as Garbrandt slaps him in the face with his foot. Jones lowers himself back down and gets popped with a right hand, and Garbrandt rides out the round taking a few shots on the mouth as boos rain down on them.

Connor picks Trevin Jones because he doubts Cody Garbrandt's ability to stick to a disciplined, low-risk gameplan. He notes that Garbrandt has never shown he can fight a patient, three-round kickboxing match without getting frustrated and aggressive, which plays into Jones's counter-punching strengths. Connor also points out that Garbrandt's durability has declined, making him vulnerable to getting caught and finished.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Kai Kara France

Round 1
Up next, City Kickboxing standout Kara France (22-9, 1 NC; 5-2 UFC) plans to ruin the flyweight debut of ex-bantamweight champ Garbrandt (12-4, 7-4 UFC). The intensity is high between the two, and referee Herb Dean takes note of this from the get-go and is keenly aware as they opt not to touch gloves. Garbrandt throws first, in the form of a sweeping leg kick. Kara France backs off and reaches out to establish his range, but Garbrandt’s length is giving him pause already as Garbrandt chops his lead leg down like a tree. Kara France keeps the center of the cage, but it is Garbrandt that stays moving and circling on the outside. The two are at a range where they cannot reach the other with their fists, and Kara France throws a leg kick and tries to time an overhand right, but the punch misses the mark. Kara France goes after his foe’s leg, and Garbrandt times a counter only to miss by a margin of inches. Volume is low, but the swinging velocity is fairly high from both 125ers. Garbrandt walks through an inside leg kick to time a left hand, and when he does, Kara France slips and nails him with a right hand. The former champ goes down in a heap, and Kara France signals that he has his number and puts his hands up. Kara France cautiously comes in to find home with his punches, without walking into a blazing counter, and he sets Garbrandt down again. The two have an odd grappling exchange, and Garbrandt drags his foe down and tries to take his back. When they get up, Garbrandt’s legs are still not totally under him, and absorbs a flush right hand that sends him careening into the wall. The Kiwi rings his bell with another flurry, and Garbrandt waves him on to keep throwing, so Kara France obliges him. A furious right hand, a follow-up left and a brutal uppercut sends “No Love” falling face-first to the ground, and Dean calls it a night for the former champion. What a monumental win for Kara France, living up to his “Don’t Blink” nickname by flooring Garbrandt numerous times en route to a statement-making stoppage win.

Rob Font vs. Cody Garbrandt

Round 1
Like the previous fight, this bantamweight headliner may have title aspirations on the line between Font (18-4, 8-3 UFC) and ex-champ Garbrandt (12-3, 7-3 UFC). A striker’s delight is expected for the fans, and nothing more need to be said about their resumes coming into this main event. Drawing the final assignment of the card is referee Herb Dean, and with a glove touch, it’s on with the show! Garbrandt instantly takes the center of the cage and swings with a low kick, but he pulls he back when he is out of range. Font keeps his range and sticks out long jabs, but none are anywhere near the mark. Both men trade single strikes, and Garbrandt chops down Font’s lead leg with a surprisingly hard kick. Font paws out a left hand and blocks a head kick, and he is not flustered as he lunges with jabs. “No Love” targes the lead leg again, and he circles along the outside when Font advances. Font whiffs on an overhand right when Garbrandt starts to showboat by kneeling down, and he loads up on a leg kick. The two trade single jabs, and Font prepares to check a kick so Garbrandt recoils it before it connects. Font slaps out his own leg kick as he chases Garbrandt around the cage, and he stings the former champ with a fierce one-two. Garbrandt shoots in low with a takedown, and Font tosses him aside and does not get reckless. Instead, he backs off and allows Garbrandt kick him in the leg. Font just misses with an uppercut as Garbrandt ducks down, and they throw haymakers at the same time. As Font stumbles, Garbrandt gets off a head kick when Font stands up. Garbrandt lands a crisp left hook as Font is not fazed, and the Boston native lands a few punches and a knee on the way in. As Font advances, Garbrandt catches him and hits a takedown to press Font in the corner of the cage and the floor. Garbrandt sits up and lands a trio of punches, and when Font stands up, Garbrandt tries to kick him in the head. Font marches Garbrandt down, and Garbrandt looks to set up that deadly right hand with his back to the wall that he put Raphael Assuncao away with. Instead, Font commits with a stiff right hand, and the ex-champ lands another takedown with ease. Garbrandt gets elbowed in the back of the head, and he punishes Font with several powerful punches as Font explodes to his feet. When Font finds his range with a jab, Garbrandt hurts him with a few punches. This close, tense round ends before Garbrandt can capitalize.

Round 2
The bantamweight contenders touch gloves to clock in the second round, and Font opens up with a body kick. Garbrandt responds with a right hand that he chains into a takedown, where he lands it in the center of the cage. Garbrandt postures up to land bombs, but Font holds him tight and tries to scramble off the ground without absorbing much in the way of damage. Font throws his legs up to threaten with a choke, and Garbrandt rolls through it but finds his arm snagged with a Font kimura attempt. Font sweeps Garbrandt with the kimura, and the two stand back up, where Garbrandt greets him with a few punches. Font lands a jab and finds himself defending a takedown attempt from the former champ. Garbrandt knees Font in the chest on the way out, and Font sticks out a few jabs to solid effect. Two big punches connect for Garbrandt, but a chain of jabs into a right hand are much more effective for Font. Font commits to the jab, which is flustering the former champ, and Garbrandt wipes his eye after he takes a few. Font fakes high to kick the leg, and one of his jabs gets countered with part of an overhand right. Font catches Garbrandt on the way in with an uppercut, and he advances to throw heavy leather. Garbrandt greets him with a few strikes of his own, so Font loads up on a forearm strike that pounds Garbrandt in the chin. A one-two from Font gets Garbrandt’s attention, and a front kick leads to an audible groan from the former champ. The Bostonian tries to land the same strike again, but he turns it into several punches that hurt Garbrandt. When a right hand lands, Garbrandt shoots in for a takedown, and it is stuffed right before the horn.

Round 3

A stern leg kick makes Font recoil his leg, and as Font looks to make him pay, Garbrandt stings him with a right hook. Font gathers himself and plants the ball of his foot in Garbrandt’s solar plexus. Font flicks out several jabs as Garbrandt is trying to measure his right hand, and he lands two punches to make Font back away. Font hurts Garbrandt with a right hand, and Garbrandt bounces off the fence before circling away. The jabs have bloodied the nose of the former champion, who cannot seem to find the timing or range of this strike. Garbrandt again jabs with his foot, and he stutter-steps to make Garbrandt take a funny step back int the cage. Font smashes Garbrandt on the chin with an uppercut, and Garbrandt is dazed and pursues a takedown. Font reverses the position after stuffing it, and he considers his own takedown as he wraps his arms around Garbrandt’s waist. Font abandons it to land a few left hands in the clinch, although he does flirt with a few mild trip attempts with his legs. Font tosses Garbrandt down to the ground, and he drops down several punches to the midsection before Garbrandt explodes back up. Font paws out several more jabs when both are upright, and a one-two bothers Garbrandt. Although Garbrandt responds with a counter, the strike is more for a setup to take the fight down. Font sprawls, and he gets back up and frees himself. Back in the center of the cage, Font’s jab is paying dividends as he lands it one after the other. Garbrandt lands one, and when Font rips the body, Garbrandt nods and tries to initiate a brawl. Font does not bite on the reckless exchange, but he still gets caught on the outside from a big punch. Garbrandt’s hands are by his waist as he wants the home-run punch, and Font does not change his rhythm and instead keeps the jab flowing. Garbrandt slips a jab and lands a left hand, but Font scores a leg kick right as the horn ends the round.

Round 4
As the fourth round is about to begin, Dean halts them momentarily so that a piece of tape can be cut from Garbrandt’s wrist. The fight resumes as Font gets back into his rhythm, and he absorbs a leg kick in the early going. Font’s feints and fakes get Garbrandt to bite, and he lands a few long punches to make Garbrandt backpedal. The two bantamweights trade single jabs, and Font has two punches skim past the bears. When Garbrandt loads up on a punch, Font is right there to walk through it and hit him back harder. Font ends a combination with a body shot, and then strides after Garbrandt to sting him with a leg kick. Garbrandt responds with one to the calf, and Garbrandt changes levels for a takedown. Font stuffs it and deals some damage with body shots, and Garbrandt’s hands fall by his waist. Font knows not to challenge him when this counter trap comes together, and he backs off until Garbrandt puts his guard back up. Font walks in with several jabs, and a few punches get through the guard and ring Garbrandt’s bell. Two to the body and two to the head come from Font, who is feeling himself right now as Garbrandt’s face bloodies up fast. Font ducks a looping shot to ring home an uppercut, and his jab is interspersed between combinations. Garbrandt fakes a takedown attempt, and Font nearly sprawls before gathering himself and jabbing his foe. A few jabs from Font lead to a right hand, and Font boots Garbrandt in the head for good measure. The jabs continue to mount for Font, as Garbrandt is forced into a defensive posture as he eats a clean right hand across the forward bow. Garbrandt’s chin has held up, even as Font stops a takedown and drills him in the face with an elbow. Font’s lightning-quick jabs break up any momentum Garbrandt tries to put together, and several land consecutively as Garbrandt grimaces. Font just misses with a looping right hand, and we have reached the 20-minute mark.

Round 5
There is one last glove touch to begin the final frame, and Font picks up where he left off in the last round with several sharp jabs. Garbrandt looks to meet him with a few of his own, and he catches Font ducking down with a few stern uppercuts. Garbrandt crashes forward into a clinch, and he lands a few short punches that surprise Font. The Boston native breaks free and slings a front kick, before landing several punches as Garbrandt circles and escapes. Garbrandt is fully loaded up on his punches, and a big left hand catches Font standing still. Garbrandt follows him with two more, but Font is there with body shots. A clinch leads to strikes from both men, with Font landing to the body and Garbrandt getting off several uppercuts. Garbrandt sets up his hands-down approach to lure Font into a bad situation, and Font sees it and rolls out. Font slips a punch to blast the former champ with an uppercut, and Garbrandt is wobbled but not going down. Instead, Garbrandt reaches out with a kick, and Font grabs it and throws his opponent into the cage wall. Garbrandt stays on his feet and throws back with reckless abandon, but Font is nowhere to be found. Fond wades forward with jab after jab, and Garbrandt’s hands go back down to his waist as he takes a jab on the chin. Garbrandt rings home a huge right hand that staggers Font for a second, but Font gathers his bearings and lands a few more jabs. A kick for Garbrandt allows Font to throw him down, but Garbrandt springs back up and looks at the ground to start a brawl. Garbrandt backs away from jabs, but Font measures him and hurts him with a right hand. Font marches forward with a head kick and another one-two, and Garbrandt’s chin appears to be fading fast. Garbrandt shoots in for a takedown, and Font sees it coming, tosses him aside and lands three punches. When Garbrandt looses a head kick, Font pushes it away and fires off several more jabs. A bit of blood from Garbrandt’s face splashes on to the camera lens, and Font keeps working him with punches. Garbrandt swings for a desperation spinning back fist, and when Font ducks it, the ex-champ shoves him over to climb into top position. With seconds to spare, Garbrandt pounds away, but Font is protecting himself from harm and rides out the round. This will be a huge win for Font, who puts himself on an impressive four-fight win streak with his sights set on a future championship opportunity. The UFC is off next weekend after this long run, so we will be back in two weeks with a jam-packed Fight Night show.

Big Brady Expert Confident picked May 18, 2021 (4 days before fight)
Rob Font

Big Brady picks Rob Font based on Font's higher output (5.21 significant strikes per minute vs 3.33), a six-inch reach advantage, and durability (never knocked out) compared to Cody Garbrandt's three knockout losses. He notes the smaller cage favors Font and that Garbrandt's low-volume style against Assuncao won't work here. He expects a knockout but acknowledges Garbrandt's power could end it.

Cody Saftic Expert Confident picked May 19, 2021 (3 days before fight)
Rob Font

Cody Saftic picks Rob Font, citing Font's durability, reach advantage (5-6 inches), and ability to mix in leg kicks. He believes Garbrandt's chin is compromised from hard training and past knockouts, and that Font will break him down over time, likely getting a knockout in the second or third round. Saftic notes that Garbrandt fades in later rounds and that Font's takedown defense and comfort on the ground will neutralize any wrestling threat.

Daniel Levi Expert Confident picked May 20, 2021 (2 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Daniel Levi picks Cody Garbrandt, arguing that Garbrandt has more ways to win with his footwork, kicks, and D1 wrestling. He notes that Rob Font has been hurt in fights before (e.g., against Munoz and Assuncao) and that Garbrandt's last win got his confidence back. He believes Garbrandt can beat Font at his own game in boxing and that Font's recent wins over declining opponents don't prove he's ready for the top three.

Rob Font

Matt leans toward Rob Font, citing Font's more versatile eight-limb striking compared to Cody's boxing-heavy approach. He notes Font's six-inch reach advantage and his ability to attack with leg kicks to slow Cody down. However, he acknowledges Cody's speed, power, and crisp boxing, and admits low confidence due to the fight being a pick'em. He predicts Font may finish late, possibly in the third round, but is not confident enough to place a significant bet.

Rob Font

Paul Shaughnessy agrees with Saftic, picking Font. He emphasizes Garbrandt's low output (66 significant strikes in the Cruz fight, 19 against Assuncao) and Font's volume advantage. He notes that Font's reach and jab will cause problems, and that if the fight goes the distance, Font will land significantly more strikes. He also mentions the possibility of betting Font live if he survives the early rounds.

Raphael Assuncao vs. Davey Grant
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Grant (-140), Assuncao (+120)

Round 1
One of the more underrated bantamweight greats might be entering the final fight of his storied career, as longtime Brazilian contender Assuncao (28-9, 12-6 UFC) is a few months away from his 41st birthday. He battles .500 UFC fighter Grant (14-6, 5-5 UFC), who posts an 86% finish rate and generally lives up to his “Dangerous” nickname. The match will be officiated by nonsense-allergic referee Keith Peterson, and the two fighters opt to clap hands. Assuncao moves to the center of the cage briefly, and they clash legs early. As Assuncao pushes back, Grant does the same, and fingers rake eyes. Grant offers an apology, and they resume nailing one another on the legs. Assuncao sits down on a booming right hand, wrapping his arm just around the head and not connecting with it. Grant boots his foe in the body, and Assuncao catches it and scores a right hand to put Grant on his back. Assuncao whips an elbow down, and Grant threatens with a triangle choke that the Brazilian sees coming from a mile away. Grant scoots to the wall on his backside, and Assuncao follows him from behind and slides his left arm around the chest in hopes of setting up a rear-naked choke. Assuncao releases the arm so that he can punch Grant in the side of the head repeatedly, all while Grant tries and fails to scramble away. Grant stands back up despite Assuncao’s arm around his neck, and he spins around and shoves his man back to get space. Grant, with distance to strike, does just that with a front kick. Grant goes to the body and tries to swing a left hand over the top, but Assuncao intercepts him with a push kick. Grant scores a right hand after regaining his balance, and he switches stances right into a right hook in response. Assuncao lets go with a few punches on the inside, and he ducks back and blocks a head kick. Grant darts forward with a few punches, sneaking them in and evading the counters. Assuncao measures a right hand, and he signals to Peterson that the two clashed heads. Grant spins with a wheel kick that just misses, and Assuncao ducks a few leaping punches to clinch up and push Grant to the wire. The Brazilian lands a few knees to the thigh before breaking off with a right hand. Grant winds up with a right hook, landing it a second before the bell.

Round 2
The respect is high to start off the second round, as the two gladly high-five to get going again. They trade body kicks, and Assuncao leans back to dodge a spinning wheel kick. Assuncao checks a low kick, and he tries to engage but gets popped with an overhand right. Assuncao chips at the calf of his opponent, while checking those that come back to his lead wheel. Assuncao grabs hold of a single, ducking a punch from his opponent, and he is stood up before securing it. Assuncao does land a right hand on the break, and they reset. The two land lefts at the same time, and Grant goes high with a kick that whizzes past his foe’s face. Grant throws a naked leg kick, and Assuncao counters with an emphatic right hand that makes Grant turn about. Grant steps in to release a spinning back elbow, and Assuncao blocks the worst of it and fires off a low kick. Grant kicks high and low, and the Brazilian swats them away without much concern. Assuncao looses a head kick, and he backs off as Grant walks him down and wings right hooks. Grant lunges forward, and his only strike that lands is a low kick. Grant gets a little too reckless, getting countered on the way in, and he finds himself getting grabbed by the veteran. Grant is warned for grabbing the fence to prevent the takedown, and Assuncao still drags him to his knees despite the foul. Grant fights his way back to his feet, but Assuncao has his arm around Grant’s waist with his legs intertwined for a trip. Grant looks to counter Assuncao with a trip, only to get thrown down once more. Assuncao gets a hook in as he takes the back, and Grant defends himself from anything else until the bell rings.

Round 3
The last round opens with a glove touch, and then the two throw hands. Both fighters connect with clean overhand rights, and they back off to measure one another. Assuncao beats the Brit to the punch with another right over the top, and Grant tries and fails to reach him back. As Grant advances, Assuncao kicks at his lead leg, which changes as Grant switches stances a few times. Assuncao hops away from a low kick, and he gets caught with a right hand coming in. Grant shucks him aside and strings a few punches together, ending it with a head kick that slides over the top. “Dangerous Davey” suddenly unleashes a torrent of punishment, blasting Assuncao with punches until he knocks Assuncao off-balance. Assuncao wobbles back to the fence, and he shoots for a desperation takedown to keep himself afloat. Grant defends the first try, but Assuncao redoubles his effort and pulls Grant’s ankle out to strip away his footing and put the Brit on his back. Assuncao holds on from an unorthodox half guard, but this posture allows Grant to explode back up. Grant fires off an uppercut that snaps Assuncao’s head back like a Pez dispenser, and he still has the Brazilian hurt. Grant tosses aside takedown entries from the veteran so that he can lay into him with punches, and he hurts Assuncao again in an exchange. Assuncao dives after a takedown, and Grant grabs the fence again to stop it. This time, Peterson has had enough of this nonsense, and he pauses the fight and deducts a point from Grant. Assuncao also loses his position from this, and Grant is thrilled so that he can tee off on the Brazilian some more. Assuncao struggles to stay on his feet from an onslaught of strikes, and Grant spins with a back fist that drills into the side of Assuncao’s head. Assuncao tries desperately to get the fight down, and he falls on top of Grant as the British fighter still tries to scramble.
“Dangerous Davey” wraps his legs around Assuncao’s neck to set up an inverted triangle choke, and the unexpected move is secured in a hurry. Assuncao is nonresponsive from on top after the choke gets tight, and he goes out without Peterson recognizing it immediately. Peterson reaches in to check on the Brazilian, who is completely unconscious, and he determines that Assuncao is out and stops the fight.
As soon as the fight is stopped, Assuncao’s coach, Eric Nicksick, is outraged from Peterson’s point deduction that also resulted in Assuncao losing his position, and it is explained that Grant had sat up and gained a superior position – and cannot be rewarded for gaining that position due to a foul. After Assuncao comes to, he removes his gloves and places them in the center of the cage to signal his retirement, while saying in his quick farewell interview that, “I think my time has come.”

Angelo picks Davey Grant as the better striker with takedown defense that should hold up against the aging Assunção. He acknowledges Assunção's past success but believes Grant's power and composure will prevail. He notes the line at -160 is likely to move and considers it a safe pick.

Connor Ruebusch Expert Hesitant picked Mar 9, 2023 (2 days before fight)
Raphael Assunção

Connor picks Assunção despite concerns about his age and recent performances. He believes Assunção's counter-striking, jab, and wrestling will be key against Grant's wild brawling style. He notes that Grant makes many mistakes and Assunção can take him down and control him, though there's always a risk of Grant landing a lucky shot.

Grant is favorite at -130 to -150; Assunção underdog at +110 to +120. Connor notes the line has moved toward Grant.

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Mar 6, 2023 (5 days before fight)
Davey Grant

I think Grant's power will be too much for Assunção, who has shown durability issues at 40. Assunção is the better technical striker, but Grant throws heavy shots and can end the fight at any moment. Assunção's recent losses have come by knockout, and Grant has the power to exploit that. I expect a knockout within the first 12 minutes.

Zane Simon Expert Hesitant picked Mar 9, 2023 (2 days before fight)
Raphael Assunção

Zane picks Assunção but is hesitant due to his age and recent decline. He notes that Assunção's counter-striking and wrestling should neutralize Grant's wild pressure, but Grant's power and unpredictability make it a risky pick. He mentions that Assunção has seen everything and should be able to handle Grant's style.

"I'm with you. I mean, I would expect these odds to be pretty close. Again, Sun Tso's old and we're both understandably nervous about his chances here."

Raphael Assuncao vs. Victor Henry
BETTING PREVIEW | SCOUTING REPORT | ODDS: Henry (-345), Assuncao (+285)

Round 1
At the ripe age of 40, some believe the book on longtime bantamweight contender Assuncao (27-9, 11-6 UFC) is coming towards its conclusion soon. In hopes of snapping a career-long rough patch of four losses in a row, Assuncao will try to show there are still more pages to be written as he takes on the well-traveled Henry (22-5, 1-0 UFC). The 135ers clap hands ahead of their scheduled melee, and referee Kerry Hatley is prepped and ready for what is about to go down. Henry strikes first with a kick to the thigh, and Assuncao responds with the exact same strike. Henry stalks down the UFC vet and lines up a right hand, but he misses the mark. Assuncao is tentative and switching stances, with his own attack largely muted as he seems coiled to wait for a response. Henry rips the body with a kick, and Assuncao catches it, leading to them both trading punches while Henry’s right leg is in the air. Henry pulls his leg out and resets, and he advances while tossing out a front kick. Assuncao sits down on a heavy left hand that graces the chin, and Henry takes note and feints and fakes multiple times. Henry ducks this telegraphed punch and stings his man with a left, and his body kick lands again solidly. Assuncao pushes a front kick up the middle, and he swings a left hook when Henry bears down on him. Henry gets his leg grabbed again, and Assuncao once more cannot set him down, but Assuncao releases it and strings together a solid one-two. Henry blinks it out and continues his constant forward pressure, and they end up clinching him until he can shake off the grip. Assuncao throws with bad intentions, and “La Mangosta” dodges the worst of them and releases a right hand that pops Assuncao in the chops. The Brazilian evades the second such hook, and he snatches Henry and turns him to the wall. Henry shoves him away and gains some space, and he marches on while Assuncao backs himself to the cage on the other side. They trade heavy punches, and a body kick from Henry bounces off the cup. Assuncao shakes his cup and they do not pause, so Henry boots Assuncao upside the head. Assuncao shrugs it off so that he can throw heavy hands, and he fires off alternating punches while Henry is backed up on the fencing. Henry slides out of the way and pushes the action, mixing in body kicks, low kicks and punches. As Henry gets fancy with a crescent kick, Assuncao snipes him with a right hand. Henry wades forward to engage, but the bell sounds.

Round 2
The bantamweights take the center of the cage and begin trading low kicks, and as if they both got the same memo, they switch to front kicks. Henry spins with a back kick, and Assuncao does the same, while neither lands flush. Henry pressures his man while spamming low kicks, softening the Brazilian up and dodging the right hook that wings by him. Assuncao connects with that heavy blow when he tries again, and Henry shakes his head and spins with a wheel kick. Assuncao capitalizes on this and jumps on top to take top position. Henry defends with an armbar setup off his back, but the veteran savvy of Assuncao pays off and allows him to move through it and keep striking. After a handful of powerful fists land on the dome, Henry explodes and gets back to his feet, only to be met with a head kick. Henry shrugs it off and gets out of the close range so he can initiate the offense. Henry swipes out with a left hand, and some swelling has developed on both cheeks of Assuncao. The bantamweights throw hammers at one another in close range, and Henry tries for a kick only for it to get caught. Henry tries to slug it out, but Assuncao lines up several clean right hands to knock Henry from one side of the cage to the other, all while hopping away. Assuncao uses this awkward situation to hit a takedown, and he finds himself in early submission danger. Assuncao punches his way out of it to open a cut on the left side of Henry’s face, but Henry doggedly pursues an armbar. The longtime contender fights off various submission setups including a shoulder lock and a toe hold, and Henry works his way to his feet right before the horn sounds.

Round 3
A touch of gloves commences the final frame, and Henry walks his opponent down and gets slugged in the face with a right hand. Henry tries to make him may, but he gets clubbed with a left hook. Assuncao is connecting with clean, heavy counters, and Henry is taking a beating but still coming forward. Henry has kicks blocked and checked, but he slings a right hand that wobbles Assuncao. Henry strings several punches together, and Assuncao fires back with reckless abandon and far more power. Assuncao scoops up a leg and dumps Henry to the mat, and like the last two rounds, Henry threatens with a submission when landing. Assuncao turns through the possible triangle, but this allows Henry to stand back up. Henry walks Assuncao down and gets punched in the face for his effort, but not before landing a few shots of his own. Henry lashes out with an elbow, and Assuncao backs off and gives him a thumbs-up for the effective blow. Assuncao catches a body kick and drives Henry from wall to wall, but this time, there is no takedown to be had. Henry springs away and walks into a crisp right hand, and Henry shakes it out and eats a follow-up right hand. Henry slides out of the way from a power punch, but they are not one-and-done for the grizzled veteran. Henry absorbs a pair of knees up the middle as they get too close, and he resets and rushes forward with a right hand and a body kick. Assuncao clinches him up, and Henry attempts to dump him down but settles to release him and line up a solid one-two. Assuncao dives down for a double, where he switches to a single and picks Henry’s right leg up but cannot get the leverage to ground him. Henry tries to sneak in short shots on the inside while Assuncao is still hanging on to the leg, and he manages to keep his balance with his back against the wire. Henry sets it down with 10 seconds to spare, and Assuncao cracks him with a left hand. Henry races after him in hopes of one last ditch effort, but the bell rings to conclude the close match before he can reach his aging but very game opponent.

Victor Henry

Angelo picks Victor Henry, citing his impressive UFC debut over Honey Barcelos where he landed 222 strikes and defended six takedowns. He notes that Assunção is on a four-fight losing streak and older, but warns that the line (3-to-1) is wide and that Honey Barcelos looked bad in that fight. He thinks Victor wins but cautions that the odds may be too high for a confident bet.

Victor Henry

Big Brady confidently picks Victor Henry to win by decision. He notes that Assunção is 40, on a four-fight skid, and has very low volume, while Henry throws a ton of strikes (352 in his last fight). He believes Henry's pressure and output will overwhelm Assunção, and that Assunção's only path is wrestling, but Henry's takedown defense looked good against Barcelos. Brady sees a potential late finish but calls it a decision.

Henry is younger and in his prime, while Assunção is 40 and on a four-fight losing streak, with three finishes. Henry's pressure and volume should overwhelm Assunção, who may have declined durability. Henry is not a big power puncher, so a decision is likely. The host recommends parlaying Henry or taking the decision prop at +120.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Raphael Assuncao

Round 1
In the co-main event, former bantamweight king Garbrandt (11-3, 6-3 UFC) looks to right the ship after a trio of bad knockout losses against perennial contender Assuncao (27-7, 11-4 UFC). Our referee is Keith Peterson, but surprisingly there is some nonsense in this bout as it takes place in the co-headliner spot despite the two men combining for five straight losses. The two do not touch gloves, and come out tentatively until Garbrandt whips a low kick to start things off. Garbrandt goes for one more, and the Brazilian takes one on the inside as he tries to close the distance. Assuncao digs to the body with a kick, and gets countered over the top with a right hand. Assuncao pursues his own leg kick, and Garbrandt replies with one that forces Assuncao to switch stances briefly. Just over a minute in, Assuncao may have already sustained some damage to that lead leg. Both men come up short on head kick attempts, and Garbrandt pauses before spinning with a back kick. Assuncao emulates him with a similar kick that likewise comes up shy of the mark, and Garbrandt comes back at him with a slapping kick to the body. Another low kick from Garbrandt forces a stance switch out of his opponent, and Assuncao returns to orthodox where he fires up a high kick and falls over after missing. Garbrandt stings him with a right hand, all while avoiding the counterattack flying his direction. When Assuncao tries to let fly a high kick, Garbrandt blocks it and blasts him on the opposite leg on the inside. Assuncao stands before him while waving his hands, and Garbrandt is content to feint and fake before sticking that lead leg with a kick that has turned Assuncao’s lead leg red. As Assuncao rushes forward, Garbrandt kicks his other leg out from beneath him. Garbrandt slips in, lands a right, and eats a counter right on the way out. When Assuncao attacks the lead leg with a kick, he nearly stumbles, but recovers before Garbrandt makes him pay. Assuncao is just barely able to duck when Garbrandt wins a counter left hook as the Brazilian kicks the front leg. As Assuncao whiffs with a spinning wheel kick, Garbrandt moves around the cage until the horn sounds.

Round 2
Garbrandt starts up with a sweep kick reminiscent of something one would see in “Mortal Kombat,” and Assuncao chases him down to the ground but cannot capitalize as he has him down. Garbrandt stings him with few punches, and Assuncao does not have the speed to catch the former champ coming out. A low kick from Garbrandt forces Assuncao to hide the damaged leg, which is starting to swell and glow red. When he does, Garbrandt goes to the body instead with a kick. Assuncao is well off the mark when he plants his hand on the floor to try a spinning kick, and Garbrandt smiles and may be trash talking him. Assuncao unloads a right hand, and Garbrandt rolls with it to avoid the brunt of it. They trade leg kicks from a distance, and Assuncao paws out his right hand to find his distance as Garbrandt slaps it away. Assuncao tries to score a high kick, and Garbrandt runs towards him into a short-lived brawl. Garbrandt thinks about a takedown, but bails on it to get his distance. The Brazilian comes up short of the mark with a spinning kick, but the left hand that follows connects well. Garbrandt replies in kind with a right hand that drops Assuncao, and Garbrandt marks a 1 on an invisible scoreboard. Assuncao hops back up and assures his opponent it was a slip, and Garbrandt practically rolls his eyes at him. Assuncao comes in to finish the round with a flurry, and Garbrandt ducks and unleashes a lightning-quick right hand from the underworld that obliterates Assuncao. The Brazilian faceplants on the canvas as we hear the horn sound, and what an insane knockout! Unbelievable! Garbrandt is back in such an incredible fashion, and when Assuncao tries to get back to his feet he nearly falls off his stool. Wow.

Daniel believes Assunção's counter-striking style is a bad matchup for Garbrandt, who tends to get reckless when hurt. He notes Garbrandt's chin is compromised and that Munoz chopped his legs with calf kicks, which may have led to his desperate rush. He sees Assunção winning a close decision or possibly catching Garbrandt with counters, and calls it a dog-or-pass situation.

Cody Garbrandt has heavy hands and great footwork, and working with Mark Henry should improve his game planning. Raphael Assunção is a counter-striker with leg kicks, but Garbrandt's power and movement can overcome that. Garbrandt's chin has been questioned, but if he fights disciplined, he can land a knockout. Raphael Assuncao vs. Cory Sandhagen

Round 1
Next up at bantamweight, Sandhagen (11-1, 4-0 UFC) looks to continue his meteoric rise when he faces perennial contender Assuncao (27-6, 11-3 UFC). The referee for this
dark horse "Fight of the Night" candidate
is Frank Trigg. We begin the fight with a few kicks traded by each man. Sandhagen tries to use his reach to keep Assuncao backed off, and after a few strikes from Sandhagen, Assuncao fires back with a salvo and just misses. Sandhagen advances, and Assuncao counters with a solid left hand. Assuncao scores a body kick, as Sandhagen maintains the pressure on the Brazilian. Leading with a pawing left hand, Sandhagen ducks another right-left hook counter from Assuncao. Sandhagen scores a one-two that backs away Assuncao, as Assuncao shakes his head. Sandhagen cracks Assuncao with a big left hand to the body, and then slaps Assuncao's lead leg with a kick. With his back against the fence, Assuncao tries for a push kick to keep some distance, but the American presses relentlessly. When they break, Assuncao tries to capitalize on it with a left hand but it is blocked in time. Sandhagen stalks down Assuncao and lands a right hand, and then leaps in the air to partially score a flying knee on the chin of the Brazilian. The opening round comes to a close with a few half-hearted leg kicks from Sandhagen.

Round 2
The round immediately begins with a couple body kicks from Sandhagen, who starts right out with more of the pressure that likely won him the opening stanza. Sandhagen picks at Assuncao with distance while dodging and weaving the fierce counterpunches from the Brazilian. Pulling into a clinch, Sandhagen lifts up a few knees and they break with Assuncao swinging at nothing but air. A body kick from Sandhagen is caught, and Assuncao grabs Sandhagen and takes his back. Sandhagen tries to spin out and eventually does so, all while passing to half guard. In a scramble, Sandhagen unexpectedly takes Assuncao's back while trying to isolate Assuncao's left arm. Assuncao evades the attempt and the two roll about until Assuncao grabs Sandhagen's back again. Assuncao gets the fight to the canvas once more as Sandhagen pulls for a leg lock. Assuncao turns out of it and takes a strange position with Sandhagen's left arm and leg wrapped up. Sandhagen gets out of it and takes the full guard position before standing up. Assuncao tries to take the leg of Sandhagen, but the American pulls Assuncao back down in a very intriguing chess match full of positions that might not have official names. The second round ends with Sandhagen elbowing Assuncao in the posterior -- you read that correctly -- due to the nature of their positions.

Round 3
The final round starts with some leg kicks from Sandhagen, who continues to evade any significant counters from Assuncao. Sandhagen digs with a left hand to the body, and blocks a counter right hand from the Ascension MMA product. Sandhagen dodges a kick, lands a straight left, and then avoids the counter perfectly. Sandhagen pushes the pressure on Assuncao such that Assuncao is continually backed against the cage, and Assuncao tries to get out of it by vying for a takedown. He gets the American down momentarily, but Sandhagen gets up and continues to pressure Assuncao. Trading leg kicks, Assuncao is forced to back away until he pushes forward to try and take Sandhagen down again. Wrapping his arms around Sandhagen's waist, Assuncao slams Sandhagen down but Sandhagen springs right back up. Sandhagen gets the separation and advances with a jab and a flying knee that just misses. They two go back down to the floor, before getting up again. With both landing a few looping strikes in the waning seconds, the fight ends.

Big Brady Expert Confident picked Jun 3, 2020 (3 days before fight)
Raphael Assunção

Big Brady picks Raphael Assunção by second-round knockout, citing Garbrandt's poor chin and recent knockout losses. He thinks Assunção has underrated power and will catch Garbrandt. He acknowledges Garbrandt is the better striker but cannot trust his chin. He notes Assunção is the underdog and sees value.

Daniel Levi Expert Confident picked Jun 4, 2020 (2 days before fight)
Raphael Assunção

Daniel believes Assunção's counter-striking style is a bad matchup for Garbrandt, who tends to get reckless when hurt. He notes Garbrandt's chin is compromised and that Munoz chopped his legs with calf kicks, which may have led to his desperate rush. He sees Assunção winning a close decision or possibly catching Garbrandt with counters, and calls it a dog-or-pass situation.

Assunção by decision, leg kicks
"I'm gonna go with ATL zone Raphael assumes how to get this one done"

MMA Lock of the Night Expert Confident picked Jun 4, 2020 (2 days before fight)
Cody Garbrandt

Cody Garbrandt has heavy hands and great footwork, and working with Mark Henry should improve his game planning. Raphael Assunção is a counter-striker with leg kicks, but Garbrandt's power and movement can overcome that. Garbrandt's chin has been questioned, but if he fights disciplined, he can land a knockout. The under 2.5 rounds is also a good play.

Under 2.5 rounds (+150); Cody Garbrandt by KO in round 2
"i like cody garbrandt i'm going to take him to win by by second round ko"

The MMA Guru Expert Confident picked May 29, 2020 (8 days before fight)
Raphael Assunção

The MMA Guru picks Raphael Assunção over Cody Garbrandt. He believes Garbrandt has an emotional issue that can't be trained out, leading to him getting KO'd again. He notes that Assunção has been training consistently and will crack Garbrandt with a big shot, finishing him in the first round by KO. He admits he previously picked Garbrandt but is done betting on him.

first round KO
"I'm picking by a son Sal I was gonna pick pedro muñoz to win by first round KO against God rang in his last fight I went with gar Brandt anyway hoping he would change his ways I'm done betting on Garen"
